I have to share a tragic connection that I discovered last night between myself and Anne Frank. Most of my family on both my mom's and dad's sides of the family emmigrated from Germany in the 1850's because of religious persecution that was going on there between the Catholics and Protestants at that time. The maiden name of my great grandmother on my dad's side is Gruenhagen. Her father came to the U.S. from a part of Germany that is now in Poland...a little town called Fallingbostel (and something else I will reveal shortly). His family had a large farm there that had been farmed for generations...and continued in the family for nearly 100 years after my 2nd great grandfather came to Missouri.
Sometime, just before 1940, as the Nazis came into full power, they kicked what was left of the Gruenhagen family off of their farm because they had other need for the vast piece of land...they needed the land for a concentration camp. It became the site of Bergen-Belsen. Anne Frank and her sister Margot died and are interred in a mass grave at Bergen-Belsen.
Bergen-Belsen is now a NATO camp and is closed to the public, mostly. However, every 5 years, NATO allows for a Gruenhagen family reunion on the family farm. A very old barn can be found on the grounds, still, with GRUENHAGEN on the front of it. My mom and sister went back to Germany last year for this reunion. I have never been. I only learned of this piece of history for my family last year after my sister came back and told us about the concentration camp there. And then, it was only last night when finishing Anne Frank's story that I connected that dot to her.
It is so tragic to me! Her story changed my young life and led to my interests in social sciences. I did not know that the story would become so much more personal years later.

I have read 2 books this week already and neither of them show up on our spreadsheet as read. Just worried that they have been missed. Perhaps one has not been added since I just finished it Sunday night, but my first one, Out of Africa, I read before it says Rachel had completed an update.
My my goodness Cheryl. That is really sad history but I'm so happy they still get to have reunions there.I know that story will forever has an impact on your life.
That story was required reading for me in 7th grade. I just wasn't able to understand how a country could do such a thing to people. My mind just was in shock from learning so much. I'm grateful my mother talked a lot me about the topics of the war and racism in the United States. I always felt different we were one of the very few Mexican families in our city. I'm second generation and was so ashamed to be different from everyone else. When I was going was focusing on my Masters in Human Development degree we focused a lot about social issues. One that really hit home was the ghost generation. I'm apart of that. It's normally of 2nd generations in a country. It's where you don't really fit in either culture, you are too much of a mixture of the two and just can't fully identify s one of them. I struggled with this before I knew it was even there.
I wish people just could be kinder to each other.
I've been reading a lot more books about the war. The House of Dolls was rough to read, I think it was the translation, but it was really slow in the first half of the book. I never ever thought about the pretty Jewish women/girls in there as sex slaves. The idea never crossed my mind so when I was into the band the Joy Division I learned they got the name from this book and the actual Joy Division/House of Dolls. It's so sad we have events and situations like this in history.
I've updated the spreadsheet. We finished our first spell out of Dandelion and have 115 points. :)Great job everyone!
Sorry I was missing on GR for the entire day. I took the day off from reading. I just needed that one day break. It was much needed. I'm back to reading now. :)

It is amazing that this series is still good 38 books in. This one was about a bunch of skeletons of street kids found. Really the first time I remember looking into something so old that wasn't personal.

We are quiet this week. :D Unfortunately for me it's not because I'm reading. I'm hoping to get 2 more books done before the end, but it will be close. I keep falling asleep. How am I going to survive summer? ;)
Work has been slammed. I don't have a day off until Wednesday and I am counting the hours until then. 10 long days straight sucks. But I am squeezing in reading where I can. I don't know how many I can finish this week though.
I am in the same boat. It's a long long long work week. Also, during my small time I have to myself, this week my friends from out of town are here. So, I am trying to read short books at my down time at work. What a horrible we to end on. It's a busy time for me. Good thing we have a lot of points.
I'm just a little burned out and can't pick my next book. I think I'll grab a couple of quick re-reads to finish out the week. Something soothing and easy...not sure what yet. Maybe a guilty pleasure book. I'll have to browse all my book apps to see what catches my eye.

Finished
and should finish
by tomorrow. I work until 1am and I'm back at work by noon tomorrow so I won't have a ton of reading or computer time. I'll set an alarm to watch for our deadline!
Title: Hero at Large by Janet Evanovich, 288 pagesN: Char - Chris Nelson
E: author
L: char - Lucy Nelson
One of Evanovich's older titles and didn't have the same kookiness I expect from her books. Basically forgettable. But there is a bunny on the cover (not one mention in the book) that I need to start my bunny quest.
I should manage to finish the other book I'm reading before the end of the challenge, but that will be it for me. Go team!
Book - One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson - 448 pages - 3 starsColour - DANDELION

I should get one more done by tomorrow night. Looking forward to reading purely for fun soon. :D
Just came by on my lunch break to update the sheet. When I finish my book in the morning we will have completed the third spell out. Really great reading right up to the finish line, team!
I will bring my laptop to work. I have a very busy day but should finish my book. I read a good chunk of it today. Our last day! Go ruby.
I brought my last book to work too. I promise to get it done before the deadline. Like almost all my other books, the only vowel I can seem to find is A. :DGreat game Rubies!
Title: Perfectly Matched by Heather Webber, 240 pagesD: char - Dovie
A: char - Annie Hendrix
E: char - Emerson "Em"
L: char - Lucy Valentine
O: char - Orlinda Batista
Wow, I had 3 characters with "O" names to choose from!
I had forgotten how much I like this series. Lucy's family has a gift to see auras for matchmaking but when she was little she got struck by electricity and her gift changed to finding lost objects. Now she and her boyfriend (who is a PI) run a business to reunite lost loves. This mystery focused on an arsonist.
That was the last book I'll finish for the challenge. It has been a pleasure being on a team with you all. Go Team Ruby!

Right now I'm working on my house quest. :)

It's been great being on your team too Diane. Are you going to sign up for the gladiator challenge? It's going to start up in June or July. I'm thinking about signing up.
I updated the spreadsheets. I've checked the bookshelves and was able to finish a book this morning. I'm working on finishing a short one, then the longer one I started yesterday (a reread of The Vampire Lestat).
Finished my book and I am leaving for work again. It will be my last one for the challenge. It was a pleasure reading with you all!
Mollie, I added your two read books to the sheet but I'm going to need some help with the letters. I'll check back in on my break to help update.
Michelle wrote: "Mollie, I added your two read books to the sheet but I'm going to need some help with the letters. I'll check back in on my break to help update."I read both books. So I filled it in for you. :) Hope that helped.
