You’re allowed to take some time! I’m reading one of your books BTW.

Because of our recent GR challenges, my read shelf now has a variety of genres.

Task 12 - 19. Reads a book another teammate read, 4 Stars or higher, Last 3 months
Book: Kindred by Octavia E. Butler
Qualification: Read by Jean March 3, 2023, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Read, Page 5
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Pages: 306
Date: April 30, 2023
Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Made into a TV series, available on Hulu, Kindred is a time travel story of an author from 1976 who travels into the past of her ancestors, circa 1800's. This has become a very popular community public library book club selection. Written in 1979, but read today, readers get a bonus time travel story of how things were in the US right before Reagan became President and the first personal mobile phones were being sold.

Task 12 - 19. Each teammate reads a book another teammate read and rated 4 Stars or higher in the last 3 months.
Book: Kindred
Pages: 306 GR
How it qualifies: read by Jean, 03/03/23
Date: 01/05/23
Review: 5* this is, in equal measures, compelling, thought provoking, and quitely horrific. Bulter uses time travel as a device to explore racism and the bonds created by family in a way that would have been more palatable to readers of the time.

Task 12 - #19 Each teammate reads a book another teammate read and rated 4 stars or higher in the last 3 months
Book: In the Middle of Somewhere

Pages: 350
How it qualifies: Starstruck rated 4 stars 25 April 2023

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Review: I haven’t read M/M for a while and this was a great reintroduction. I bought the 3 book set so will be reading the rest of Rex and Daniel’s story. I’ve got to find out what Colin’s deal is.

And will move to Divergent later (this evening) if we do not have 6 yet.

Task 13 - 69 Team does 6 Award Winning Books
Book/Author: The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
Qualification: Won awards, as listed on book main page, link above: 1) CWA New Blood Dagger Nominee (1983), 2) إمبيرتو, Los Angeles Times Book, このミステリーがすごい! for Best Translated Mystery Novel of the Year in Japan (1991), Prize Nominee for Fiction (1983).
Pages: 552
Date Completed: May 2, 2023
Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was Umberto Eco's 1980 debut novel, since he was a distinguished professor of communication and poetics in his primary career. While the book is an award winning historic mystery, imbedded in its liguistic structure is a primer on the use of rhetorical tropes, poetic forms and an intricate dialogue on democracy vs. a strict Middle Ages theocracy, with condemnation of the Inquisition and conservative Catholicism. In the late 1980's I met the author when he was on a US academic tour...totally charming. Just as the movie of Fountain Head and Atlas Shrugged do not capture the ideological position or passion of Ayn Rand, the movie of The Name of the Rose is great film fun; but, does not portray the issues of the rant in one of the final chapters (Seventh Day) --->or the fire, that burns buildings from the top down, killing many...See! Allegory and Symbolic Layers of meaning!
700+ editions, over 20 languages, widely available for free on public library apps
"I have never doubted the power of signs and symbols" Eco, final chapter, The Name of the Rose

Rating/Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ okay so not my genre. I found it slow moving until the last 60 or pages when finally something happened in the book.

When do you sleep Benita?"
Rarely...it is a common problem in grief. (Oddly, many who lose a spouse go the other way and sleep all the time.) Sleeping was a skill I was bad at before Kelly died. Now, I am awake most of the time.
But, books give me countless hours of entertainment while I rest and worry. Great distractions!

Book/Author: The Hollywood Daughter: A Novel by Kate Alcott
Qualification: Cars in parking lot, right side - middle

Pages: 310 Kindle 2017
Date Completed: May 4 ...may the force be with you day
Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25 A well written novel telling the coming of age story of Jesse Malloy, whose father is a Hollywood PR exec brokering the issues of Ingrid Bergman giving birth in 1950 to a child by director Rosallini, when married to someone else. An intersting take on early parasocial relationships, in a pre-social media Hollywood print magazine era. The fictional story line is embedded in detail rich historic research of the Hollywood movie industry 1942 - 1950s.

Task 14-88. Team Reads 6 w/ Vehicle-Car😆
Book/Title: Close Up by Amanda Quick
Qualification: Car on cover

Pages: 320 (Kindle pub date)
Date Completed: May 5, 2023
Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25. Author Amanda Quick (126) is a.k.a. Jayne Ann Krentz (368), Jayne Castle(58), Stephanie James, Jayne Bentley, Jayne Taylor and Amanda Glass. With over 500 books to this author's credit, I wonder how the productivity is accomplished. Are there many assistant writers? Is it a cottage industry or is the effort managed by her publishing house? This is #4 in a series, but introduces new characters so works as a stand alone. It is a historical mystery situated in historic Hollywood. That was a fluke, not a theme to follow The Hollywood Daughter, since I picked something from my Libby app with a car.

Task 15 - 68. Read a minimum of 1200 pages in books with one word titles.
Books selected for this task need to have one word titles, articles and exclamations included. So books such as NautiCal would work, but books like The Thief would not. Remember to use the first edition Kindle page count.

Book: Savannah by Linda Lael Miller
Qualification: has pages
Pages: 201
Date: May 6, 2023
Review: ⭐⭐⭐.5. Western mail-order romance books in a series are my metaphoric fresh potato chip from a big bag! No "nutritional value" but a treat! Springwater Series #3 bring us the story of a Miss Kitty of Gunsmoke type and her meetings with the town doctor (who is written more attractive than Milburn Stone)

Task 15 - #68 Read a minimum of 1,200 pages in books with one word titles

Book/cover link:Icebreaker
Pages: 435
How book qualified: 1 word title
Date Completed: 5-7
Rating/Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I debated the stars the book was incredibly boring, all drunken parties and drunken sex for the first half, but the author redeemed herself the second half of the book with an actual plot line, conflict and resolution. But my lingering question is this what college athletes are like today?

So happy to help!

Book: Sunset Embrace by Sandra Brown
Qualification: white flower on cover

Pages: 384
Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Written in 1985, Sunset Embrace is a Western romance, complete with wagon train, with characters that are more complex than many Western romances. Ellen Archer, the narrator, does excellent work by deploying accents and styles that clearly marks the various characters.
