I've recenty finished Lucy by the Sea Lucy by the Sea (Amgash, #4) by Elizabeth Strout by Elizabeth Stroutand I've appreiated it a lot. I find that there are many novels these days dealing with the recent pandemy. THis one I find is the best I've read so far.

Agree with your opinion. That ending simply wasn't tidy. I had expected far more from this book.

PattyMacDotComma I weakened and started a new (to me) series. (What was I thinking?!) Of course, I enjoyed Martin Walker's French village, so I expect to be squeezing in another visit to Bruno, Chief of Police again before too long.
Bruno, Chief of Police (Bruno, Chief of Police, #1) by Martin Walker 4.5★ My review of Bruno, Chief of Police

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati.
It is a mythic retelling of the story of Clytemnestra. Clytemnestra is depicted as a feminist who is unafraid to challenge the rampant misogyny in Ancient Greece. I thought it was very well done, especially since major events and the Greek heroes who populate them are seen through Clytemnestra's unflattering lens.

Oh, that's a fun series! It always makes me wish I could live in Bruno's village - and craving some of his wonderful food!

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson today. 4☆

While ostensibly about the life of several residents of a New York city co-op in a future which has experienced significant rise in the ocean levels, making most of lower Manhattan into a new Venice, this novel is actually more about finance and how its current relationship to government in the U.S. is dysfunctional.

The Girl on the 88 Bus by Freya Sampson
Earlier published in the US as 'The Lost Ticket'. A mixed bag for me, slightly tilted towards the positive side.

Black River by Nilanjana Roy
An interesting Indian noir. Pretty good, but would have been great had the author stuck to the crime investigation elements in the plot rather than trying too much.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read The Hero of This Book by Elizabeth McCracken. McCracken blurs the line between memoir and fiction, but in the process, she paints an unforgettable portrait of the indomitable spirit of her mother. A thoughtful and compelling read.

The World Outside My Window by Clare Swatman
Why have alcoholic protagonists gone beyond thrillers and entered women's fiction? Such a disappointment.

PattyMacDotComma The Rush, by Aussie author Michelle Prak, is a scary outback, backpacker thriller! Storm, blackout, body lying at the side of the road in torrential downpour ... do you stop or get the heck out of there?

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read What Strange Paradise by Omar El Akkad. It makes for difficult reading because it tells the tragic story of illegal migrants escaping from their war-torn countries and political persecution. It does it through the eyes of a nine-year old Syrian boy. Very compelling and extremely relevant in light of the current humanitarian crisis.

Leslie | 16369 comments I enjoyed the classic mystery novel The Cask by one of the original members of the British Detection Club, Freeman Wills Crofts. I don't know why this author has escaped my attention until recently! 4☆

I also was impressed with our group read, The Housekeeper and the Professor. Charming and easy to read but, as with a Japanese rock garden, there is more than appears at first glance. Another 4☆

PattyMacDotComma The Voice to Parliament Handbook: All the Detail You Need by Aussie authors Thomas Mayo and Kerry O'Brien is an excellent, easy-to-read summary of Aboriginal and colonial history as well as a discussion about the upcoming Constitutional referendum.

Absolutely wonderful! If you're an Aussie, don't miss it.

Women We Buried, Women We Burned A Memoir by Rachel Louise Snyder
A good memoir, though I had expected it to focus a bit more on the domestic violence problem and on the author's international experiences, as the blurb seems to hint.
