Driving Heat by Richard Castle

Qualification: #7 in Nikki Heat series
Finished: 3/20/23
Rating: 3 1/2 stars
Review:
Nikki Heat get a new murder of an art collector. There seems to be a lot of suspects in the beginning. Nikki is trying to keep Jameson Rook, the reporter that follows all of her cases, at bay. But he is growing on her. Fans of the show Castle can see the characters easily in this book. The beginning was a bit boring but got more interesting about halfway through. I would give it another 1/2 star for the surprise ending I didn't expect. The narrator wasn't the best for this story but it didn't take me out of it either.

Review:
An easy, entertaining read. Love, loss & hardship amidst war & society's restrictions. While I enjoyed the overall tale of Kate's search for the truth of her origins, I found it hard to engage with the characters to any great extent. There's a lot of back & forth between time frames which may have resulted in my occasional feeling of disconnection. A good story, if a little slow at times.

Book: The Art of Deception
Author: Nora Roberts
Pages: 339
How it Fits: Stand Alone
Date Read: Mar 21 ★★✰✰✰
Review:
An old school Nora Roberts, very similar in tone to her other works of the late eighties, early nineties. Published in 1986, it holds well over time, if you remember that the technology is true to the time of writing. It's a bit like an old James Bond movie in tone with hints of forgery, and espionage. Roberts is a master story teller. This novel was very cleverly written with humourous witty banter between father and daughter, and lovely playful flirtations between our main couple. The villain was a curve ball which was a nice surprise unfortuantely after the big reaveal it devolved into a disappointing conclusion. I must admit I have never liked NR's grey characters, heroes or heroines that enter in questionable activites for 'the best of reasons.' 2.5 stars

Review:
Another great police procedural from this author. Roy Grace and his team investigate a fatal traffic accident. Suddenly the drivers involved in the accident are being killed one after another. There is also a mafia connection. These books always have loads of characters, especially the police. It takes a lot of team work to crack cases. At home Roy's fiancé Cleo is pregnant and experiencing complications. Roy's wife Sandy has been missing for ten years and he's finally taking steps for her to be declared dead. I have never really liked that particular storyline, but now there is a development...

Review: First this is a sweet beginning to a romance, not what I would consider a romance, but since the author is claiming it as a romance I am tagging it romance. Kaiden and Esten are sweet together and protective of each other. They are thrust in a mystery that is more dangerous than they know. But come out relatively unscathed! Looking forward to more from this Author. This has a unique magical system that I am enjoying. Ok is an interesting nonhuman secondary character that helps these two on their quest to solve the mystery and avenge the death of their master.

Review:
This was rather good addition to this series. Gaia is a singer turned actress followed and admired by millions of fans. She comes to Brighton to film a movie and encounters her 'number one fan'. At the same time a body is found at a local chicken farm and Roy Grace and his team come in to investigate. As implausible as it might seem, the two cases could to be connected. Good police procedural again, maybe not as much characters as in the last book, or at least I could keep track of the characters more easily. In the first books Roy's wife Sandy was portrayed almost as a saint, but nowdays Roy remembers her being whiney and discontent. There are developments in that storyline too. In the end there are a couple of really nice twists.

Sounds great. Have fun!

Review:
It has been ages since I last read one of this series so it was great to see Cliff Janeway again. I love the tidbits about the bookish skulduggery that goes on quietly in the bibliophilic world. Cliff is an ex-cop turned bookseller, travelling the country picking up the odd tome; an interesting character & often in troubles. In this episode he's doing a favour for his lawyer-love, Erin d'Angelo, by checking out the confession of Laura Marshall: did she or didn't she kill her husband? Of course, there are rare books involved, & life in small-town Paradise becomes dicier than in Denver.

Review:
As this is the first in this series that I have read it seems a bit slow and seemed like it could be a shorter book. But I did enjoy it in the end and will go back and read it from the beginning.
Mary and Sherlock travel to San Fransisco where Mary lived. They investigate the deaths of her parents, and it seems someone is trying to get rid of Mary as well. The story is told both in the voice of Mary and the voice of Sherlock. Making some of it a bit redundant. About halfway through the book picks up and really ramped up at the end. Which would make it a 3.5 star read for me.

Review:
A beta hero suffering severe ptsd after a school shooting, the heroine on medical leave from the army. A lovely pairing. Millie has only ever been about military men, so Drew is a total enigma to her. Millie is given an undercover assignment searching for thr moneyman funding terrorist organisations across the world. She has a profile of criteria to match. Drew has his own secrets and Millie becomes increasingly suspicious of Drew as he fits many of the criteria. A lovely story of how they overcome their personal fears to find their true HEA and of course catch the bad guys. A wonderful novel after the disappointment of the conclusion of the previous book. 4.5 stars

Roger how is your book going. We do have a Free pass if we need to use it. It is getting toward the end so now would be a good time if needed.
