PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments I can't pass up a good sampler, and the latest Buzz Books 2023: Fall/Winter is full of tempting excerpts. I've picked some I like the look of and included many short quotes to tempt you too. These are always available for free online from Publishers Lunch as well. Check the GR blurb for more info.

This had everything that should have worked for me, and yet it didn't. Disappointed.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments While the topic was interesting, I feel that with better editing Mr Hammond and the Poetic Apprentice by Mellany Ambrose might have dragged less, had less repetition. Still, an impressive debut. 3.5★s

This needs more readers - it is such an excellent literary fiction novel, and a debut one at that!

Rachel (mimbza) | 697 comments She Who Became the Sun (The Radiant Emperor, #1) by Shelley Parker-Chan She Who Became the Sun is an award-winning debut novel by Asian-Australian author Shelley Parker-Chan. It is a reimagining of the 14th century Red Turban rebellions that ended the Mongol Yuan dynasty and issued in the Ming dynasty. It is historical fiction with a touch of fantasy and features village girl Zhu who must become a man to save herself and seek her fate of greatness. Here is my review

Rachel (mimbza) | 697 comments A Psalm for the Wild-Built (Monk & Robot, #1) by Becky Chambers A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers is a cozy utopian sci-fi; a sweet quirky little book featuring gender neutral, tea-making monk Dex and the caring philosophical robot Mosscap. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ here is my review

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments OK not a book review, but a book light review
Here's my review of the Glocusent Portable Clip-on Reading Light
What I really like about it:
• It’s very light (40g) so barely adds any weight to your book
• The light can swivel to the page you are reading.
• It charges via a USB port so there’s no messing with dead batteries. It takes just over 2 hours to fully charge.
• When fully charged it lasts between 9½ hours (torch bright) and just over 57 hours (perfect for night-time reading) depending on the colour and brightness you choose.
• It offers five different colours of light so you can decide what’s easiest on your eye or suits your needs or the conditions.
• Each colour of light can be set to three levels of brightness.
• LED means no heat generated
• It would be great for travelling: light, compact, easy to charge, long lasting.
What I like less about the Portable Clip-On Reading Light:
• Clipping onto the page means the light doesn’t cover both pages without swivelling

Here's the light doing a fine job on one of my favourite reads this year (thanks Toni Jordan):
Thanks Glocusent for this device to test and review.

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments I love Aussie author Robbie Arnott's writing, and I'm sure I would have enjoyed The Rain Heron more if I'd read it instead of listened. It is original, poetic, and magical, but it is also brutal, which is a (little) less confronting on the page than when going straight to the brain.
The Rain Heron by Robbie Arnott 3.5~4★ My review of The Rain Heron

message 1520: by Colin (new)

Colin Baldwin That’s a really good point, Patty.
I’m yet to tap into audio books but a friend with failing sight said she uses a very clever program to convert the text to speech but it’s robotic and can be quite awful, apparently.
Others find audios, from real people, exiting.
What I’m gettin’ at = I do want to ‘read’ the Rain Heron one day.
Cheers from CB

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments I weakened and started a new (to me) series. (What was I thinking?!) Of course, I enjoyed Martin Walker's French village, so I expect to be squeezing in another visit to Bruno, Chief of Police again before too long.
