January Subdue the Shelf Roll Requests
DianeMP wrote: "Could use some help understanding my roll of 6-4. I don't understand how what to do is different for Tien, Joy D, and myself when we have the same roll. Also, how do I "unbold" a book title?"
Are you situated, Diane?
6-4 is a special roll. If you roll it, you get a surprise! You don't have to use the surprise unless you want to.
Everyone who rolls it gets something different.
No idea why I put a 499 page book (A Trip to the Stars)on my list. I literally had no memory of even owning this book, apparently I bought it at a thrift shop sometime in the last year because it has a sticker from there. I took the titles from my GR "owned list" rather randomly without really thinking about the individual books. And it's smallish print as well. Meanwhile I need to read a couple things for in person groups, so not sure how long this will take. I am enjoying the book, but I think I will be back in the caboose before long, hope there is still a fun crowd there!
Robin P wrote: "No idea why I put a 499 page book (A Trip to the Stars)on my list. It's the nature of those finding themselves in the Caboose. Pesonally I will be there for a while as I have a couple of books needing to be read more urgently than my 2nd Subdue book.
Meanwhile, I expect JoyD to vacate the Private Car for the Royalty Coach any hour now. Everyone else seems settled in for a bit. A 'bit' here for some means a day, two at most.
I am wandering around the private car, disoriented and wondering "where am I and how did I get here?"
Meanwhile, in the Baggage Car, all the cats and dogs are out of their crates making nice to the visitors, and I hear that the multiple cases of wine being shipped via this train will likely end up as only cases of empty bottles by end of the game. Trash bags are being provided -- please hang on to your sippy cups from the Caboose as you will want them in Second Class Lounge. If they happen to be refilled from an open bottle ....
All other doggie bag and snack trash should be properly disposed before you leave.
I advise all in Second Class Lounge to read and post reviews quickly to move on to First Class before the cafe server there eats all the snacks.
You can always go backwards instead of forwards, Joy, and join us in the second class cabin. Can’t say the snacks are up to much but we make up for it with good quality alcohol
Robin P wrote: "No idea why I put a 499 page book (A Trip to the Stars)on my list. My last roll had me landing on The Ink Black Heart at over 1000 pages so I swapped it out for an early on the shelf book. I don't know what I was thinking there. Plus I own the Audible and prefer that series in audio. I'm still going to get to it, just not in the first pass.
KateNZ wrote: "You can always go backwards instead of forwards, Joy, and join us in the second class cabin. But if you've had several margaritas it turns out you don't really care.
Rolls for 1/17Nicole D 6-4
AJ 2-3
Olivermagnus 6-3
Ellen 1-4
Joy D 3-5
Nancy J 2-4
Hannah 4-4
Nicole, you have a special roll of 6-4. You can leap in front of the person who is the next closest in front of you at any time during the game (one time use). i.e if you are on 16 and the next person is on 17, you can go to 18. Or if you are on 21 and the next closest person is on 30, you can go to 31.
For those who end up doing a 2nd, 3rd or more laps around the board - assuming that truly is an option and why not? - you will all end up back in the Caboose for a time. The Caboose Party and Baggage Car Poker Games never end. I do notice that all the poker players are listening to audiobooks though. Just means the softer luggage is available for lounging by those with books and ereaders in hand.

How right you are
Olivermagnus wrote: "Robin P wrote: "No idea why I put a 499 page book (A Trip to the Stars)on my list. It would make sense if you dislike the book or can't get it for whatever reason. I am liking the book so I'll stick with it.
Anita,Just to clarify, If I take the special 6-4 roll do I have to read #44 on my game board. If so, I really do not want to read that book at this time. Can I get another roll in its stead?
I am going back to #51 on the board. I forgot about the swap needing to be an equal number of pages. I started it yesterday when I realized what happened. I'm at 60 % so I'll still take my roll but it will start from #51 instead of #60.

You cannot get another roll. You do have choices.
1. You can move 10 spaces, and just don't use the special advantage (the special advantage let's you move ahead to 44). The special advantage is optional.
or
2. You can move to #44 and read the book there.
or
3. You can move to #44 and use one of your swaps to switch out the book for a different book that's the same length or longer.

Or to read the book that was originally there.
Moving backward and re-rolling could actually work out to be advantageous so I think that wouldn't be the most fair approach.
I definitely appreciate the honesty!!
Anita wrote: " I think the best way to handle it is to select a different book to read that fits the requirements of the swap, and stay on 60.Or to read the book that was originally there. ..."
I'm reading the original book that was #51 The Ink Black Heart
Anita wrote: "Oh I see, Olivermagnus! I thought the swap was for 60. Got it. So you will need a roll today?"I'm already at 65% so I do need a roll today. I'm hoping to finish it this evening.
Will today's roll start at 51 or 60? My last roll took me to 60, but as soon as I realized what I did, I started #51.

Let me know if I am correctly synopsizing the situation. I looked at your board, so I think I have a better grasp.
You used a swap for 51 and then moved to 60 and read the book that was there. Then, you realized that the book you read for 51 didn't fit the swap rules, so you read the book that originally existed for 51. Do I have that right?
If yes, then I would say you are on 60 and moving forward from there. You read a book for 51 and you read a book for 60 and all the books are within the rules now. So to me, it makes sense that you continue on from 60 now that you've got yourself all straightened out.
Let me know if I'm confused!!

You have it right. I just wanted to make sure I didn't accrue any advantage for failure to follow the rule.
I see that Nancy's name was added to the list of roll requests for the day but I think my request may have been missed - I'll be ready for a new book tomorrow, so I just wanted to re-request just in case. Sorry! Don't want to be a nuisance.

That's exactly why I post the names. So I don't miss someone by mistake. I did miss you!! Adding now.

Joy D 4-5
Olivermagnus 5-1
Nancy 2-6
Diana H 3-6
Nicole 1-1
Omg, Nicole . . .you are the most unlucky roller I've ever seen. Or I am jinxing you. So sorry.
But your roll is a special roll. Sorry, Joy D, but when you finish your current book, you need to move back 3 spaces. Or, if you've already finished it, you can take the 9 first, read that book, and then move back 3 spaces. Please let me know that you've seen this.
**Just an alert**Joanne needs to take a little break from handling the master board, so it's on me. Please alert me if you think I've made a mistake anywhere along the way! It's not the easiest thing to maintain . . .
Robin P wrote: "Well, The Ink Black Heart might slow Olivermagnus down a little, it is 1408 pages in hardcover!"I read about 100 pages an hour so it won't slow me down for long. Joy D is a reading phenom though, so I don't think I can catch up. She is my Reading Idol.

I appreciate your honesty and double checking!!!

Thanks OM. I got lucky that my first few rolls were high numbers and had all the books on hand (or were available right away from the library).

I propose to move forward 9 first and land on #88 (which I have read). I think the rules say you can read 1 ahead or behind in that case, so I would read #87 (while keeping my "marker" on 88) then move 3 spaces back to 85 (which I have not read). Does that work?
Joy D wrote: "Anita wrote: "Sorry, Joy D, but when you finish your current book, you need to move back 3 spaces. Or, if you've already finished it, you can take the 9 first, read that book, and then move back 3 ..."Yes it does. I just updated the master incorrectly, but I will fix it.

Oh my gosh, too funny! Less enthusiastic about this roll, only because its not my favorite book on my list - but at least it will get read and off my physical tbr forever! haha
Anita wrote: "Yes it does. I just updated the master incorrectly, but I will fix it...."Great. Thanks!
