January Subdue the Shelf Roll Requests
Anita, I'm sorry, but telling me how to make my letters bolded for the game is above my pay grade. I tried to do it and wound up making all the book titles below Lost Roses capitalized. I'm sorry to be a pain in the neck, but as you can tell I'm pretty lousy at the computer. I don't know how to undo it. Any help is appreciated.Diane

The backslash is the key!

I think you probably started doing it properly, but after the word Roses made a tiny mistake.
Please be kind to yourself and patient. It's hard at first, but we will get it fixed.
At the end of the word Roses, look at what you typed. Did you put a / mark in front of the letter b? That is what you need to do.
so basically, you want the entire thing to look as follows, but without the spaces.
< b > Lost Roses < / b >
You could copy exactly what I typed here into your space 8. Then, delete the space between every character. And voila! Your Lost Roses will be bolded.
You are very close so take your time! Before you know it, you'll be doing this in your sleep.

I usually find I accidentally added a space between the characters or got the characters out of order.
You will get this!

The problem is there are too many choices lol
I should've thought ahead and checked out all those lists and made a possible listing myself, d'oh!

Tien got 5+6 =11. Doesn’t that make her the leader? If not, are we all still on 0 until we finish our first book?
ETA
Oops I see that Ellen got 11 too. So there is a tie. Both Tien and Ellen are the leaders.
So are you invalidating Nicole’s special role because there is a tie? Or will you randomly select Ellen or Tien as the winner?
I can imagine having ties all the time as people move at different speeds.
It would be cool to have one large game board to visualize where everyone is. It could just be a list decorated with emojis.
Continued…Just to clarify *where* we all are... Are we saying that that there is no leader because there wasn’t A leader *before* todays’ role? If you apply the special roll at *this* moment, I think it’s cleaner because no one started a book yet. It really matters to Ellen and Tien to know if they are on 8 or 11.

There's no leader because no one has completed a book yet on their board. Once a book is completed, there will be a leader.
We are just going to treat this initial 1-1 roll as a regular move on the board and not move anyone backward (since no one had actually secured a new spot on their board by completing a book and a review at the time of the roll).

Although Tien and Ellen both rolled 11, calling them leaders is very disputable. They need to read the book on their 11th slot, AND they have to read a book from someone else's board. Some would argue they are actually behind.
Until a book is completed, there is no clarity on a leader.
In the future, if a 1-1 is rolled, and there is a tie at the leadership position, both will be impacted.

Is this just a day one exception? How will we know who is in the lead? I rolled 9. Am I really on square 9 now, or on zero because I haven’t read my book yet?
If Oliver reads her book tonight and requests a roll that brings her to square 11, will she be the leader, or tied for leadership with the other two who are still on that square.
That makes sense Anita. Tien and Ellen might have preferred to be bumped back 3 places.
I think I’m tripped up by trying to visualize a token on a physical game board. I rolled a 9 but I’m not really there yet. I’m sort of hovering above the space until I finish and review my book.
The timing does add another element to the game and takes away some of the randomness.
These are good issues you are raising. There is conceivably a slight difference between where people are on their board and who is truly in the lead. This is more of an issue right at the beginning than I expect it will be going forward.Right now, no one is leading in my mind because no one has secured their spot with a read. Similarly at the end, you can’t win if you haven’t read the final book, even if you are on the final board space.
There may be other scenarios where there is some judgement required to discern how special rolls play out. I will do my best to be fair when those arise. The 1-1 roll is intended to use luck to slow the momentum of leaders and give others a chance; but right now no one is truly leading.
The concept is that a player's placement is not just based on a roll of the die. It is rolling the die and then reading and reviewing the book. Your 'turn' ends and your place on the board is secured when you have read and reviewed your book. There are reading challenges in other groups based on Monopoly that follow the same format and rules. If you think about it in terms of playing a real board game like Monopoly, you roll a 9 and land on Community Chest, your turn is not over and your position not fixed until you pick a card and do what it says to do, which could move you forward, or backwards, or stuck in jail. Here you have to read and review a book...or two sometimes.
I'm requesting my next roll.I noted this on my gameboard but wasn't sure if I needed to include it here or not.
Roll 1 - 5-2=7 - I will stay on 7
7. The Lost Ones - Ace Atkins - 4 Stars - 1/2/23

Lol I knew you would be the first one to request your next roll. Congrats!

This is the concept I was trying to articulate, and it's good to hear that other groups handled this in the same manner.
For January 3rd rolls, so far I have:Anarresa

These rolls will be completed in a group sometime after 3 pm eastern time today. Just tracking here to make sure I get everyone.

Great job Diane-I had the hardest time with "some html is ok" when I first came to goodreads-as someone else said it will become easy peasy the more you do it!
I took on being a Mod in another group a couple years ago and almost immediately they asked me to do the newsletter. I had no idea how to use the html. I was a bit freaked out because it had taken me a while to even figure out how to use the "add book/author", or post the cover instead of the title. I didn't understand how to do spoilers. I didn't even know how to copy a post and have the links work, that is by clicking edit before copying. After much experimentation and help from an existing Mod, I finally got it. At the beginning, it took me hours to do a newsletter. Now I can knock them out pretty quickly, and the html sort of makes sense. I enjoyed bragging to my kids that I knew how to do this!

Can someone tell me where the instructions are for how to do such a thing? I may need a tutorial myself.
Amy wrote: "Can someone tell me where the instructions are for how to do such a thing? I may need a tutorial myself."Above the comment box on the right hand corner it says some html is ok. If you click on that you can see the html codes for most of them you put before what you want to say and after what you want to say.
For bolding put b don't space between<> or >
It is u for underline
I for italics
s for strike through
and full word spoiler when you have a spoiler you want to hide.

I'd like another roll, please, I'm halfway through this book I hate LOL - after all my false starts.
Nicole D. wrote: "I'd like another roll, please, I'm halfway through this book I hate LOL - after all my false starts."I'm so sorry! Off to see what it was.
I just wanted to say that my first subdue book, the Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper, arrived home from the library today, as my husband who has been running a tremendous amount of errands for me, was kind enough to go back to the library again to go and get it. Its next up after Carrie Soto is back. And then I have three or four buddy reads in a row to get to! I am having a slow start, but then again so is my year of 2023 a little slow and draggy at the start.
Lize-meré wrote: "Please send me a roll"You received 6-4.
That roll includes a surprise! You receive the right to move ahead 5 extra spaces after any roll. You may hold this to use at your discretion.

It's a little better . . .a special roll . . .

A Monopoly based reading challenge I once did had me creeping around the board the first round (there were 22 or 24 rounds altogether), at tiny rolls. Everyone was finishing rounds in 3 or 4 moves and I had 11 or something ridiculous in my first round! I thought I was doomed. Nope. A couple rounds later and the die turned in my favor and others were creeping. I ultimately won the game despite the dreeping start.
So don't despair and cheer all the TBR reads you will put behind you!
