I’m reading Troll: A Love Story by Johanna Sinsisalo for the monthly challenge. What a sleaze bucket that Martes (Martti) guy is!

Yes, the story is fascinating. I even like some of the “research” information. Some of the poems are pretty good. I am just after the part where Pessi attacked Martti and he now has eight stitches in his head. I’m not sorry that I paid $12 for the book.

Re Troll. Well... (view spoiler)[Do you think he was going to be dinner at the end? The Trolls having guns and having handled lighters was a twist I did not expect.
I am still thinking about the gender angle. The mm theme was somewhat strange the way all of the characters interacted but the tie in with the pheromones definitely interesting. I am still thinking about it. I gave it three stars but I could go up to four. The folklore chapters were fine but I did not get why Palomita and her husband were thrown in. (hide spoiler)]

As I understand it, animals are sensitive to pheromones. We humans underrate our sense of smell. I liked the theory that Troll pheromones were attractive only to Gay men . Aftercall there is the theory that women detect pheromones in men, as a sexual trigger..

Not sure why Palomita and her husband were "thrown in" to the plot. For a while I thought that Palomita was only attracted to Angel because of the Troll pheromone. It could be that they were there to create tension for the reader...is the Troll going to do bodily harm to her husband? Or perhaps to Palomita out of jealousy?

I liked the folklore snippets. Don't know much about trolls except for the troll under Billy Goats Gruff's bridge. ;D.

I didn't get why Trolls carried guns and lighters either. Don't know about eating Angel, but I didn't think he had long to live!

Back in 2016, I had not been exposed to as much M/M literature as I am now. I thought the story was quite unique and so gave it 5 stars. (hide spoiler)]

Re Troll (view spoiler)[ I think I may have not made the connection that the Troll pheromones were only attractive to gay men. It does put a different slant on what went on in the story. Yes, I liked the folklore snippets too. I have read at least two other troll stories and a little more m/m since I remember reading Billy Goats Gruff. :o)

I think the guns and lighter were included to show that the Trolls had evolved or were gaining in that respect on the humans. It is implied that Trolls killed Angle's brother - after the fact.

And yes, I think Palomita and her husband were part of the story to add tension and maybe to add a little more to the plot. (hide spoiler)]

If you are into a diversion for Sherlock Holmes, I definitely recommend Bonnie MacBird's Sherlock Holmes Adventures. #1 is Art in the Blood. The first four have top hats on the covers.

Re your Mars Vacation and your post for the monthly challenge.
Did you enjoy A Princess of Mars? Are you going to read the others? I did not know that they were available in audiobook. Who was the narrator? John Carter's story always fascinated me. I think I first read it in middle school - a long time ago. I have read them several times over through the years.

If you ever get a chance, you should read the Pellucidar series books too. :o)

I have never read the Kim Stanley Robinson Mars Trilogy. I always found his writing long and dry.

The version of A Princess of Mars? that I listened to was Narrated by: William Dufris. I really wish I could have gotten the Scott Brick version, he has become one of my favorite narrators. I wasn't bowled over by the story but I gave it 3 stars. Its age shows a lack of sophistication. BUT SO WHAT, it was short and a simple escape. I will read the rest of the series, not all in a rush. Good short challenge fodder!

In contrast Kim Stanley Robinson Mars Trilogy was overly scientific and lacked adventure. I think it was written with an ecological agenda, not just a Sci-Fi escape. The back and forth character debates are what kept me reading. (Sort of like paper or plastic? Both sides of the argument.) Bottom line, I am not likely to read him again. I see that you feel the same!

I WILL give the Pellucidar trilogy a try. Thanks for the recommendation
