Follow him into the public houses, Mayfair mansions and servants’ quarters of Victorian London, into the intrigues of Parliament and secrets of Oxford. This historical mystery series (set in the 1860s), with its keen eye for period detail and razor-sharp plotting, offers readers an unparalleled brand of charm, sophistication and suspense. 10 Ed Gorman Sam McCain series

11/13 Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse

11/14 Dorothy Gilman Mrs. Pollifax

12/13 Julie Garwood Buchanan-Renard

12/13 Walter Mosley Easy Rawlins mysteries start in post-World War II Los Angeles and quickly progress to modern times.

12/13 John Connolly Former New York City policeman Charlie "Bird" Parker is a private investigator whose cases increasingly take on shades of the supernatural.

12/23 Martha Grimes Initially a Scotland Yard chief inspector, later a superintendent, Richard Jury is invariably assisted in his cases by Melrose Plant, a British aristocrat who has given up his titles, and his hypochondriacal but dependable sergeant, Alfred Wiggins. In addition there is a recurring ensemble of background characters. (Personally I think it should be called the Melrose Plant series. He seems to do all of the work.)

13/16 Sarah Graves The Home Repair is Homicide mysteries feature Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree, a home repair expert in Eastport, Maine.

18/19 Sax Rohmer Imagine a person, tall, lean and feline, high-shouldered, with a brow like Shakespeare and a face like Satan, ... one giant intellect, with all the resources of science past and present ... Imagine that awful being, and you have a mental picture of Dr. Fu-Manchu, the yellow peril incarnate in one man.

19/22 Nancy Atherton Aunt Dimity is a romantic ghost in England involved in romantic mysteries.

22/24 Jonathan Gash The adventures of Lovejoy, a British antiques dealer based in East Anglia whose scruples are not always the highest. He does however have a reputation in the antiques trade as a "divvie", meaning one with an almost supernatural talent for recognizing exceptional items as well as for distinguishing fakes or forgeries from genuine antiques.

25/28 M.C. Beaton Agatha Raisin is a frustrated, yet endearing, PR agent who retires from London to Carsley village. Police, even her friend Bill Wong, see more bumbling luck than skill.

I have plenty of 2016 goals to keep me busy. Don't need to keep these Challenges extended past what is necessary for completion....so I'm putting them off until 2017.

Don't panic, I'm not actually gophering for next year yet! ;0)

Is this a recommended reading order? I just finished Cold City which is book one in Repairman Jack: The Early Years. It's a prequel series. I've been trying to decide if I should forego the prequel and jump right in to the main series. A couple of reviews suggested to start with The Tomb.

Thanks, Almeta. I think I should finish up some of the other series I have on the go before I get carried away with starting this one. It is daunting.

Bizzaro February Holidays Toppler ideas:

• American Heart Month –. Read a book with vampires, werewolves, or shapeshifters; )
Blood Bound, Patricia Briggs Shapeshifter

• An Affair to Remember Month –This task is worth 20 points (because this is a real take one for the team task) and can only be done by someone who hates romance books. You guessed it - Read a romance book. Queen Meanie thought up this task, not me. When a Scot Ties the Knot

• Great American Pie Month –. The link is to a great article about the meanings of the lyrics.

Pick out a verse and read a book related to your interpretation. Explain the relationship. This task is worth 10 extra points.
Fool, Christopher Moore
Verse 3
Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the Jester sang for the King and Queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
In a voice that came from you and me
Oh, and while the King was looking down
The Jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while Lenin read a book on Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died
We were singin'

• National Children’s Dental Health Month – Read a book recommended for children. 5 extra points if it’s a Newbery Award winner.

22 George Washington's Birthday –Read a book where the person on the cover looks like they’ve had plastic surgery or some other alteration (boob job, botox, lip plumping, liposuction, or some really good airbrushing – some of those men and women on the covers did not come by those bodies naturally!) Tell us what work you think they’ve had done.
Garrett (Cold Fury Hockey, #2) by Sawyer Bennett Garrett must be on steroids to have a body like this and he altered his skin with that tat.

• 29. Polar Bear Day – Read an erotica book, or Read a book with a cover that makes you go "Whaaaat?" and snark it for us for 5 extra points. Wallbanger (Cocktail, #1) by Alice Clayton . “He was wooing me. And I was letting him woo. I wanted the woo. I deserved the woo. I needed the wow that would surely follow the woo, but for now, the woo? It was whoa.”

lol! Toppler marathons are my work!

All but 2 of these are audio, which means I may do other things while listening to a book. I think I can get seven of these in.

In question is MY ability to multi-task!☻

message 24: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 51503 comments I have limited multitasking abilities when it comes to listening to audiobooks. I'm either driving in my car, or sitting on the couch playing jigsaw puzzles. I've tried cooking and housework, but I get too distracted. Mind you, I rely on the speaker from my iPad so maybe I should invest in some wireless speakers to amp up the volume.

300 is a bit of a stretch.

I have The Ex on CD which states that it is a 7 3/4 hour read. I think I can do Noon to Midnight.

message 29: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 20686 comments Hmm that's about 38 pages an hour. I think it depends in the text density if I can read that fast. I might check it out if my other cover fails the test. I have nothing that fits in my yearly challenge, so it doesn't matter what I read.

IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO AVOID SERIES!

I read a LOT of "first in a series" and never move on from there. Often, once is enough.☻

Holmes On the Range Mystery Series by Steve Hockensmith is pretty entertaining though.
