A Pocketful of Rye by Agatha Christie
Having read about a dozen of Agatha Christie's mysteries, this was the best one yet. I had been growing tired of her convoluted plots with nearly miraculous solutions in the last chapter. Also, her frequent racist statements were irritating me. But all of that is minimized in this concise mystery concerning three murders (two poisonings) and greed and REVENGE. This is the 7th volume in the Miss Marple series...(I'm reading them in oder) and I liked that Miss Marple was an important but not central figure in the plot.

Not Quite Dead Enough by Rex Stout
Looking at the title, I didn't realize this pairs two novellas. And, frankly, I didn't read the description carefully or I might have realized it. They are perfectly paired. In the title story, we learn that Archie is a Major in the army and that Wolfe has decided to do some training in an effort to slim down and become fit. (That would be a funny sight indeed!) Archie has been ordered to get Wolfe to investigate a suspicious death which had already been deemed either an accident or suicide. It's Wolfe - we can be pretty certain it was murder.
In the second story, titled Booby Trap, Archie is still in uniform. This story is the natural outcome and sequel of the first, so the less said here the better.
Though short, both are good. The book itself is about 190 pages and each story is about the same length. But they were too short to feel invested in even trying to see where they would lead. I wouldn't have missed this for anything, but I cannot come up with more than 3-stars.

Beyond the Glass by Antonia White
It was a relief to get to the end of this fourth and last book of Antonia White's series that begins with Frost in May. The later books are certainly memorable and well-written but very gloomy, with a different terrible thing happening in each book. All these dreadful events conspire to unhinge the heroine, and at the end it's hard to believe she is still only 23 after all she has been through.
Book two was heartwrenching, but I found this last one the heaviest. It also has a psychic element that didn’t fit well with the dark and stark realism of the rest, for me. Still, the writing is so good that I had to give it 3 stars.

Revelation by C.J. Sansom
Sixteenth-century lawyer Matthew Shardlake once again gets mixed up with the politics of the court of Henry VIII after an old friend is killed in a gruesome way and his death is linked to another that involves the powerful Seymour family. Shardlake soon finds himself and his assistant Barak working for Archbishop Cranmer to root out a vicious serial killer.
I'm enjoying this series, although this instalment had some killings that were close to the limit of the violence I'm prepared to read about, and I hope the following books will rein that back in. I guessed the killer fairly early, and then I got a bit impatient because there seemed to be more pages than necessary before the showdown. But still it was a good read that had me hooked.

Longshot: The Inside Story of the Race for a COVID-19 Vaccine by David Heath
Published 2022
It is very seldom that I finish a book that I immediately know is really not for me. However, this book had enough information in it, information I had searched for, so I plowed through it and am glad that I made the effort.
Please do not get me wrong, the book for the right audience is probably astounding. The fact is, I am a right brain person and all the science in this book boggled me. If I truly understood half of the research, I feel good about it.
The author's research was through and well worth mention here. He spends his daytime job as an award-winning investigative journalist and a little research on him had me trusting him.
As I said, for the prime left-brain audience, this is the book on Covid-19 for you. We right brain people got enough of it that we are happy
