2022 March PIFM Challenge

What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?

The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.

The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.

You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!

After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.

In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations. PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)

Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!

Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:
✱ The books picked for you are not yet released.
✱ If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✱ If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.

You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✱ A book is not available at your library.
✱ A genre or author you don’t enjoy.

Please do not start reading your book(s) until the first of the month. You then have the entire month to read your pick(s) and give some feedback.

TIPS TO MAKE THE CHALLENGE ENJOYABLE FOR EVERYONE!


Pickees
✱ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
✱ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.

Pickers
✱ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.

✱ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee's tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.

✱ Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.

A few hints to help with book selection:
✱ Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
✱ Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
✱ Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
✱ Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✱ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) Contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
✱ Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf) This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.

[TBR] Good Girl - This one had a lot of laugh out loud moments for me. I really enjoyed it and it definitely made me happy.
[NEW] Loving Mr. Daniels - This was in rated over 4.0 and for good reason, it's kind of taboo subject but it's really well written.



March 4 - National Hug a G.I. Day
[TBR] Dear Love, I Hate You - This one only has one man on the cover
[TBR] Rejected by the Alpha - This one has a couple embracing
[NEW] Dear Aaron - I see you have some other Mariana Zapata books on your TBR and I really enjoyed this one. Aaron is in the military.



March 8 - International Women’s Day
[TBR] Slammed (just a woman on cover) - this was my first introduction to Colleen Hoover and I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
[NEW] A Rogue by Any Other Name (historical and part of a series) - I'm not a huge fan of historicals but this one was done really well. I truly enjoyed it.



March 9 - National Get Over it Day
[TBR] The Marriage Debt (dark cover, holds a grudge) - This one sounds interesting.
[NEW] The Highland Fling (enemies to lovers) - going in the complete opposite direction. this one is kind of lighthearted although it has serious parts in it. the audio is great!



March 18 - National Awkward Moments Day
[TBR] Blindsided (awkward character) - this one is on my TBR as well and I must say I haven't been disappointed by any of this author's books so far!
[NEW] Challenge (awkward character, makes me laugh) - and here's another by this author that is a start of a series that I'm really enjoying! The Harris brothers are certainly entertaining!



March 20 - National Proposal Day
[TBR] The Bad Wedding Date (wedding in story)
[NEW] Intercepted (tagged romance) - a newish author on the scene, I liked this book that had a bit of a different take on the Wives and Girlfriends (WAGs) of professional athletes.



March 21 - National Single Parent Day
[NEW] Unexpected Reality (single parent) - the guys in this series really do it for me. for all their tattoos and gruff exterior they are some really amazing men!
[TBR] Our Overtime (single parent) - this one features a single parent and second chance romance. It also sounds really cute. I've put it on my TBR as well!



March 30 - National Doctors Day
[NEW] Dr. OB (doctor character) - This was really funny and I enjoyed the couple, their families and the situations they found themselves in. This is also great on audio.
[TBR] Hawk (shows some skin) - I know your profile said your current obsession is MC books so I had to make sure to get one in here!

I decided to use this opportunity to recommend some books that you have on your preferred shelf that I just loved.

Dark Lover - that's one I highly recommend, I love the beginning of this series. I have to admit my love is fading with the last several books but I have started over reading the series again to find that love!

Him - can't say enough about this one. Loved Wes and Jamie. Such a great story

Under Locke - Mariana Zapata, the queen of the slow burn. There have been very few of her stories that I haven't loved, but there was just something about Locke that got to me. Callie Dalton narratating is also like crack!

NEW: A Knight in Shining Armor (knight counts as military!) Hopefully you’re able to get your hands on this one. Normally I find time travel novels difficult to get into, but this one was really well written and wonderful – ALL the feels here!


March 8 - International Women’s Day
TBR: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (woman on cover) A must read, though if you can get the audiobook, I recommend that too! Evelyn was a fascinating take into old Hollywood and a fun read!
NEW: Longbourn (historical/woman on cover) If you have or have never read the classic Pride and Prejudice, this is a fantastic spinoff of the story as told by the maid in the Longbourn house. I loved that unique POV!


March 9 - National Get Over it Day
TBR: The Highland Fling (enemies to loves sort of) Definitely on my TBR!
NEW: Not Quite a Husband (Holding a grudge/enemies to lovers) I’m constantly surprised by this author and I don’t know why. Her books are fabulously written with attention to details and refreshingly atypical female leads. This book was so much more than it’s cover and I could have recommended many more from Sherry Thomas!


March 18 - National Awkward Moments Day
TBR: Where the Crawdads Sing (awkward character) Surprised how much I enjoyed this book. Kya is definitely the awkward character, but beautiful in her way! If you can, try the audiobook!
NEW: Just One of the Guys (awkward character/made me laugh) Loved this book!


March 20 - National Proposal Day
TBR: Vision in White (romance and wedding definitely in story!) I’ve read the series and this one is probably my favorite book as I loved the MCs! Been on your TBR a few years so let’s get it read!
NEW: Well Met (two people/romance) Another that was just so fun to read! Loved the Renn Faire POV and the juxtaposition of Simon’s character! Great series!


March 21 - National Single Parent Day
TBR: The Good Daughter (single parent/family and siblings) Sounds good!
NEW: Wicked Intentions (all three!) Since you loved the Bridgerton series, I really wanted to get the Maiden Lane series in front of you. I’ve read all of them and love most of them. Strong women and the men who need them!

TBR: The Dirty Book Club (doctor BF/Wealthy character) This sounds so much fun, adding to my TBR too!
NEW: Jemima J (skin, wealthy character) I read this first in my 20s and LOVED it. Such an great story about coming to terms with one’s self and being happy in your skin. I still go back to it every now and then.


Bonus: March 2 - National Read Across America Day (Dr. Seuss Day)
NEW: The Perils of Pleasure Honestly I could have gone on and on on my favorites, but I was satisfied with the picks I made above so I kept it to one more that didn't fit anywhere. Well it could have, but I just HAD to get this series on your radar! This series had me laughing very often. Though not all of the books were my favorite, most definitely were! I love the way JAL writes!

NEW: The Warlord Wants Forever* by Kresley Cole - Your profile said you enjoy enemies to lovers - this series has a lot of good ones. This novella is the prequel, but I thought it might be a good way to get a taste of the author's style and world.
TBR: Breathing Room* by Susan Elizabeth Phillips - I LOVED this book!!

March 18 - National Awkward Moments Day:
NEW: The Lightning-Struck Heart** by T.J. Klune - This book is over the top wild and laugh out loud funny!! Fabulous characters too!
TBR: Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis - When I saw you were enjoying SEP, I knew I wanted to recommend Jill Shalvis - she has a great sense of humor in her books while still being heartwarming. This is the beginning to a wonderful series!

March 20 - National Proposal Day:
NEW: Royally Screwed* by Emma Chase - I think this is probably my favorite series by the author, though maybe not my favorite book. That one is later in the series. 😉
TBR: Highland Hero by Cynthia Breeding - Looked intriguing!

March 21 - National Single Parent Day:
NEW: Repeat* by Kylie Scott - Different type of second chance story, but I loved it!
TBR: Pucked by Helena Hunting - I very nearly recommended Sustained here, because while I completely agree with you and HATED the hero in Overruled, the second book is one of my all time favorite couples! I didn't want to push that when you really didn't enjoy the first book though, so I found another on your shelves. I really enjoyed Pucked and family is definitely part of the story.

March 30 - National Doctors Dayy:
NEW: Big Rock* by Lauren Blakely - My first book by the author, but not my last!
TBR: Passion on Park Avenue by Lauren Layne - I haven't read this one, but have enjoyed the ones I have read by this author. I really should push her higher on the list...
