Oh Kristie, what a catalogue of catastrophes! The worst of course being not able to spend Christmas with your mum 🥺 I hope you can find dinner somewhere and that one day you can look back on this and laugh. *Hugs*

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 965 comments MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Oh Kristie. I am so sorry to hear about everything. I agree with Margo, I hope this becomes that story you tell for years to come with laughter. And know that no other holiday will likely ever be this bad again!

Hope you manage to find some food and catch up with some people before your drive tomorrow.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Merry Christmas to those who celebrate. I hope your day is full of family, friends, food, and fun. In any combo.

For those who don't, hope you have a relaxing and restful day :D

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Please feel free to cross the streams in the alliteration there. That got a bit intense on the reread lol

wow. it keeps piling on. hopefully, you managed --or will-- to get a bit of fun between the crazyness.

message 1258: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19127 comments Thank you. :)

Sandra, it really does! It's like when you're watching a movie and think oh come on that much stuff never goes wrong like that at once. But, in this case it has. It has just been such a strange holiday.

Fortunately, we are both able to move past stuff pretty quickly so we're doing ok. Just masked up and popped by mom's house to drop off and pick up gifts. I felt really bad that we couldn't stay; I hate leaving her alone on Christmas, but she is going to get some rest and will hopefully feel better quickly. We are now trying to figure out something for dinner.

Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates! I hope you are all having a wonderful day!

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments I'm so sorry that everything went so bad, Kristie. It can only go better from now on ;)

Merry Christmas to everyone! The little bit of plans we've had, felt into the water.

message 1260: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19127 comments Thanks, Saar. We're doing the drive home today. It is a really long day of driving, but we listen to a book while we travel so it makes it more enjoyable. We'll finish the entire book today.

message 1261: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Make sure to stop enough to rest ;)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Hoping for an uneventful trip back home, Kristie. :)

Saar, did you have to cancel your plans too?

message 1263: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments My son got sick again on Friday. Normally we would've go out with my sister and her partner to a Japanese restaurant on Christmas Eve. But because my sister has cancer and is starting a new chemo therapy, it wasn't wise to come. So we cancelled and Sander (my son) started to have a fever, a bad cough, muscle ache...So, it was a very calm Christmas weekend.

message 1264: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments I hope your son feels better soon, Saar, and that your sister's treatments are successful.

message 1265: by Saar The Book owl (last edited Dec 26, 2022 10:55PM) (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Thanks, Janice, he's feeling better. The fever is gone, but the cough and the tiredness is still there. As for my sister, everything that buys her extra time is a blessing.

@Kirsty: did you arrive safely home?

message 1266: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Saar, hope your sisters chemo is effective with minimum side effects.

Between covid and respiratory infections it seems every second I talk to here is ill. The government have set up a national task force to prevent our hospitals from becoming overwhelmed. Why does that all sound so familiar? *groan*

message 1267: by Saar The Book owl (last edited Dec 27, 2022 03:49AM) (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Thank you, Margo. There are a lot of respiratory infections at the moment and all a bit sooner than normal. The weather is also very wobbly.

message 1270: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3257 comments It sounds like the holidays were a mixed bag. Saar hope your son is feeling better and Kristie you made it home.

I’m in the Georgia mountains but went to Nashville for Christmas to see my daughter. Got there just in time for the snow. Left yesterday to get back to Georgia and the snow followed us. Will warm up today and the snow will be a memory in time for us to head home to Florida later this week.

Audiobooks are fantastic for a road trip. I try to pick one that will entertain my h too as it’s the only time he listens to books. Yesterday we finished A Man called Ove.

message 1271: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments I've seen it in the newspaper and on the news what 'snowbomb' Elliott is doing in Northern America. It's heavy!

message 1272: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 965 comments No problem Saar and I’m always very kind Saar

message 1273: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments I'm glad to hear your son is doing better, Saar. I remember you told us about your sister a while ago. I hope the treatment works.

I also spent a week sick before Christmas. I tested negative, so it was not COVID, but I felt very badly. I am still coughing a little. I think it was just a bad cold, since the fever wasn't that high, but I really felt miserable.

message 1274: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Dec 27, 2022 06:32AM) (new)

Kristie | 19127 comments Thanks everyone. We made it home safe. It was a long drive, about 15½ hours with traffic and stops. We listened to Devil's Way while driving. We both really like the series and this one was good too. Happy to be home.

Saar - I hope your son is feeling better and your sister's treatments are going well.

Sandra - I'm glad you're feeling better, but sorry that you were sick for Christmas. That's awful. My mom was sick for Christmas. I felt so bad that we went all that way and had to cancel plans with her.

message 1275: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Hope everyone and respective families heal up well!

Glad you made it home okay, Kristie. After the past week, I was dreading a flat tyre or some such thing. But home safe :D

message 1276: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Good to know you made it safely home, Kristie!

Weather is a little better today, so I plan to go to the movies with my kids (and my nephew, who is visiting).

According to the forecast we will be above freezing tomorrow for the first time in many days. Not for long, though, but fingers crossed.

message 1277: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Dec 27, 2022 07:39AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments I have said it before, and I will say it again, I just cannot comprehend those temps.

We were at Christmas dinner with my family, including my brother who is Aus/American with family all through Michigan and his wife who is also Aus/American with family all through NY. And all of us, including them, were saying the same thing. It is so outside our comprehension. You guys are in awe of us and spiders or snakes, but that is NOTHING to these temps.

You guys are the tough nuts in North America.

message 1278: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19127 comments No kidding! It was a crazy few days, but the fortunately the drive home was fairly uneventful. :)

It has been really cold where we have been as well, but the temperature seems to be all over the place. We had a high of 19ºF (-7.2ºC) the day our electricity was out. Our extended forecast has temps potentially getting as high as 69ºF (20.6ºC) next week. I am so glad to see the temps increasing. I am definitely not a cold weather person.

message 1279: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments I worked this out for a friend the other day who is in Kansas City, which you guys may find helpful.

The Latitude of us in Canberra, is the same as Dallas. For him in Kansas City, it's the same as being in the middle of Bass Strait which is the body of water between Melbourne and Tasmania. Perfectly in fact, Kansas City is the same as King Island which is in the strait.

Where Shirley lives in Brisbane, is the same as San Antonio.

message 1280: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5190 comments I would say we did not get it too bad here in QC but the people that have been without electricity since the 23rd may come over and lynch me. The winds on the 23rd were really strong and it created a lot of power outages. Big ones were back online fast enough but there is still a lot a small ones that are harder to reach. Hydro employees did not get any Christmas time off.

Drove up close to Montreal on the 25th and got a mix of everything on my drive but nothing really bad.

message 1281: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments We’ve been watching on the news the unbelievable scenes of the blizzards in the NE of America. Wish we could send some warming sun rays from Australia.

message 1284: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments The explenation made me think of the movie 'The day after tomorrow', because in the article I've read about the storm now, it was the combination of a snow storm, but with an abrupt dropping of temperatures into a low pressure area. That created Elliott and that was also in the movie, but very dramatised, of course.
This weekend we will have temperatures we normally have in the autumn season. This causes a lot of damage to animals, like the hedgehog. It's worse for them if they are allready asleep, then wake up and then the temps are dropping.

message 1285: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments We are also having warmer temps than usual this week. Weather is just crazy.

message 1286: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments So.... I just tested positive for covid. Did a test the day before yesterday which was negative, but my symptoms got worse this afternoon and with new year's eve plans tomorrow I tested again.

It's the first time I have it. Secretly I had been thinking I might be immune and would be a very interesting medical case, but no such luck ;-)

message 1287: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments I'm sorry you have to cancel your plans, Peggy, and hope it is mild and you feel better soon. My sister also suspects she is immune. Everyone around her had it including her partner, but so far she didn't get it.

message 1288: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19127 comments Oh no, Peggy! I'm so sorry. I have a lot of friends and family that have had it recently. My mom is currently positive as well. It is her second time. I've already had it twice and have still been testing due to exposure, but so far I'm feeling fine and testing negative. I hope you feel better quickly. Crummy timing.

message 1289: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Timing is never great.. we spontaneously decided to go away for a couple of days at the end of next week. Just booked it yesterday. I would have been more bummed if I had to cancel that, but hopefully it's not necessary.

I hope it is a mild case and you get back on your feet quickly. Around here, I am starting to feel like I am the only one that never got it. Or maybe I did and was one of the asymptomatic.

message 1291: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Oh, such bad timing Peggy, another few days and might and you'd have had an iron clad excuse for time off work ;-) Get well soon x

message 1292: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Oh, no, Peggy, that's an awful timing. I hope you aren't feeling too bad.

message 1293: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks all!

Lol Margo! Of all the times it could have happened it's right in the middle of a 2-week holiday. Worst timing ever ;-)

message 1294: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Oh Peggy!! I am so very sorry to hear. I hope you are okay, and it doesn't hit you too bad. Please take it slow and just do what your body needs.

We went to a party tonight, and it was the furthest we have walked since we have had Covid (25 mins with hills). It was a thing.

message 1295: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Dec 31, 2022 08:31AM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments I just set the threads for the January reads. Do not worry, you did not miss a day and I am not already drunk! My experience is that every January 1st GoodReads collapses, so I'd rather do this today and do not stress tomorrow.

I'm now starting to work on my lasagna for tonight, so I won't be around much today. I hope you have all a wonderful start of the new year, and that you get to spend time with the people who means the most to you, or at least some of them.

message 1298: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Ah, Peggy. That is too bad. Bummer that you caught it during vacation. I hope you recover quickly.

I haven't had it yet either and when I was admitted to the hospital, it was to a ward that was on active covid outbreak, and my roommate had it. Most of my family and friends have had it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
