Marnie (marnie19) | 3257 comments Hey Everyone

I haven’t read a book since October but I knew to come here today to start this year’s challenge.

I became a Grandma in October ( little girl named Amara) and have been on Grandma duty. My DIL is from Malaysia and because of Covid her mom couldn’t come out so I’ve been doing double Grandma duty. My DIL is in medical school and my son is working so I stayed with them for a couple months to help everyone get sorted. It was exhausting and wonderful but did I mention exhausting. Lol

Anyway, I’m home and ready to read. Happy New Year.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Happy new year, Marnie!! Grats on your little grandling, and Amara is a gorgeous name.

I have had a lot of friends have kids this year with their parents overseas who can't get into the country. I know a lot of them would have loved such an invested and excited MIL as yourself. So I am sure your DIL and son have really appreciated you around!

message 11: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Tis 3am and all is well, on the possum front. I mean, on all fronts, but I know what we all invested in.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yeah, the site is not working well for me either. It's slow and I keep getting error messages too. Maybe I should just start reading a book instead of talking about it.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments LOL

Since I have memory (and a GR account) January 1st is a nightmare here. The site is overloaded and showing error all the time. The app hasn't work since very early in the morning.
My theory is that everyone is at home and setting GR annual challenge goals, etc. I don't really know the reason, but I happens every single New Year day.

That is very exciting! Bet, after you get rested, you'll be missing that baby.

message 20: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3257 comments Thanks everyone. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I do. They live across the country from me ( I’m in Florida and they are in Washington State) so we will have to make the most of our visits if travel gets easier. I’ve been watching the flight cancellations with horror and it’s way too far to drive for a quick visit.

message 21: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19127 comments Oh, that's hard, Marnie. It's about a 13 hour drive for us to see our grand, so we don't do it often. We lived really close by until he was 6 and it's not fun being so far away.

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Congratulations, Marnie. Amara is such a beautiful name.

message 23: by Sarah (last edited Jan 06, 2022 01:59AM) (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Happy new year everyone. I hope you all had a good festive period. Things were a little up and down for me but I expected that. Saw spiderman at the cinema with my cousins. Made some new friends. And played board games. Those were my highlights. I started eating meat just before Christmas and ate a lot of it over the two days. I was left with such a bad stomach. I know it will ease off but I'm not that fussed so going to go back to being a pescatarian for now. It's not looking like I'll be heading back to work as planned this week. we have a shortage of lateral flow tests here so my clients and myself won't be able to use them ahead of sessions plus all the uncertainty over restrictions has meant people didn't book in for the new year. I think January might be a tricky month.

Congrats Marnie!

message 24: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Jan 02, 2022 12:03PM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Sarah, are you able to hold some of your sessions remote? I think you did this at some point in the pandemic, or I'm just confused.

We went see Spiderman last week too. We really enjoyed it. (I'm not the superheroes type of person, but with 6 boys... it is unavoidable). Now we are watching the previous ones, to refresh our memories about the multiverse.

message 25: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments New Year's resolutions, anyone?

I made only one, and it will probably take me the whole year to accomplish it. The only thing I proposed myself to do during 2022 is adding some enjoyment to my life. Just that. I sadly realized that currently there are not many things that bring pleasure to my life. The pandemic only did this even more extreme. I am so bad in this department that I can't even mention 5 things that I would enjoy doing. But I will get there.

message 26: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2097 comments Ahh, I wish I could go to the movies! They've closed the cinemas here again due to high covid numbers. Well, actually they allow 10 persons into one movie show, but you need to book the whole show for your party. I just checked and it costs 230 €, so not happening, LOL!

No resolutions for the new year, I'm afraid. Just hoping that the pilgrimage that I was supposed to do two years ago will happen.

Christina ❤️M❤️ (christir1159) | 1 comments New year's resolutions

2- financial goals
1- health goal
and last... and the only one I actually feel like sharing.

I will not do nice things for my kids while they are being mean to me.

message 28: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Congratulations Marnie.

I'm not making any resolutions. Pretty much never do.

message 29: by Peggy (last edited Jan 02, 2022 02:58PM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I really hope you find some things that bring you joy Sandra.

I didn't make any official resolutions, but I started these virtual challenges which got me moving more, so I want to keep that up. I'm also doing some challenges with my health watch, like now in January try to do 300.000 steps. And I also set myself the goal to go out for a walk or run for at least 15 minutes every day (just walking to the shop doesn't count, it has to be a deliberate walk). It's easy on weekends and in holidays and I easily do long walks then, but on workdays when it's cold or grey or rainy or busy it's sometimes easier to stay in and work some more. 15 minutes isn't much but I know once I'm out it will often turn into a longer walk.

I printed a calendar like this and I can colour in a bit of it every day I reach my goal.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Everyone can use more enjoyment, it feels like 2021 has been a particularly rough year.

Other than the standard health and financial goals I usually have, I decided I needed to branch out into something more interesting this year. So I also have 2 other resolutions, to take photos everyday and post 1 on Instagram. Kind of a minimal 365 day photography project. And to make a new recipe every week, to expand my horizons.

That calendar is very neat! I might steal it. I've been trying to encourage one of my boys to practice violin more often. We printed a calendar for him, but this one is way cooler.

I hear you. I had to do this a few months ago with one of my kids. I understand he is frustrated in many ways, but he has to understand being mean to me is not the way to solve anything. It has helped. He is getting it.

I like these and considered doing this as well, but need to find one I can print for free and without logging in. I have a Pinterest, but I never use it and don't remember my login info.

I like these resolutions.

message 39: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19127 comments I didn't really make any resolutions this year. I'm still working on some changes I made last year. It's going well, but I don't feel the need to make any other big changes yet. I don't tend to make my resolutions on New Years any more anyway. I just decide to make a change whenever I notice the need at any point during the year. I definitely have some things I'd like to tackle, but not at the moment.

Christina ❤️M❤️ (christir1159) | 1 comments Just finish our family Christmas breakfast/Dinner and gift swap. We are always late celebrating since most work through the holiday, but it is always so much fun.

message 41: by Roz (last edited Jan 02, 2022 07:38PM) (new)

Roz | 4524 comments I stopped making resolutions a few years ago. I don't keep them anyway, so what's the point? My goal though is to make it through this year with no major mishaps so I can celebrate next year. This year was busy-- selling our New York house and buying a new one in Texas. Next week we'll finally be getting some furniture that we ordered. Very exciting.
Kids. They can really get to you. I've always figured they turned mean and nasty, saying things they know they shouldn't because it's safe. We're parents, not their friends. Our door is always open, they'll always be fed and have a place to sleep, clothes on their backs. As angry as we may get with them, they know we love them unconditionally. Of course, that doesn't mean they should take advantage of that and turn mean. I used to have to stare mine done and warn them to back up and not to stand so close to the edge of the cliff. Actually sometimes I still have to remind my younger one (37), but less often.

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Everyone deserves an extra spark of joy this year, after last year ;)

I haven't made any resolutions, as I don't fullfill them. I think 'no resolutions this year, just do it.'

message 44: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments My only resolution is to be kind where possible.

I get a bit snarky and snappy when I'm stressed and that's something I don't like about myself. This year will be all about keeping my head above water and not killing anyone 😵

message 45: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments I love all the resolutions so far, or the non-resolutions. I agree, we need to be kinder to ourselves, make sure others are kinder to us, and make ourselves happier.

I want to work less, be stressed less, and therefore nicer to those around me, and able to spend time with those I care about rather than those I am paid to care about.

I also still need to loose a lot more weight, so taking time to do more than sit in front of a computer doing the above is the aim. Move more, do more physical work, eat better (and waste less!!), drink less.

As I write it all down sounds all interlinked a bit...
