Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Today I learnt that we will replace Elizabeth with Charles on our coins, but due to convention since Charles I, while Elizabeth II faced right on our coins, Charles III will face left. They do a switcheroo every time a new monarch comes to power. Who knew!

Republican here, but I appreciated the dedication she brought to the role she believed she was appointed to do. And I always felt there was a sense of humour there we never quite saw, which sounds like it was true.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments The other thing I heard today that made me a little sad, was that someone remarked it will be generations before there is a potential Queen again. With Charles, then William, then George... the monarchy is back to the status quo, which seems very sad for all the hard work she did to prove herself.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I had lunch with AmyK yesterday and Queen Elizabeth's death was the first thing she said to me when she came in to sit down at the table at the restaurant we met at. "Did you hear?..." It is going to take some time to get used to, I agree.

Oh, and we were wondering about the coins too. Wow!

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments We had rare glimpses of that sense of humour, Rusalka. I wish we could have seen more.

Was honestly my first thought after processing. I've updated the above as I had them both facing right, he'll look left.

They won't take the coins or the $5 note out of circulation (the Queen has always been on our lowest note), they'll just start adding Charles ones in. Eventually they will go out of circulation naturally.

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments There will be a lot of small and big changes. It's interesting how it affects everyone all over the world, how everyone is sympathizing. Queen Elisabeth left her footmark with every person. King Charles has a big shoe to fill.

message 1057: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments The queen is on our $20.00 bill. I imagine they won't pull them out of circulation here either. I need to go to the bank and withdraw some cash so I guess I'll find out.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments I told the niblings tonight to start collecting coins

message 1059: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments When we get a new king/queen the old coins stay, it's just that new coins will have the new king or queen on them.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I hope someone will care for her dogs. I can not think of her with out seeing those dogs.

message 1061: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments I was reading an article today that they will be cared by family - likely Andrew since he gave her the last couple of dogs. There are 4 dogs and they are all quite young.

message 1062: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Well, I'm still kind in shock and can't completely believe it, but I have been accepted in the university to do a major in Spanish (+ a minor in Comparative Literature). The ultimate goal is to be a literary translator.

message 1066: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I also heard those dogs have their own personal chef. I guess Andrew will have to take him in too ;-) and if he can't take the dogs, I think there will be thousands of people lining up to take them.

That's awesome Sandra! Huge congrats!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Thank you! I still don't know how I am going to do it, where I will find the time, the energy, the focus, but I will give it a try.

message 1069: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19130 comments I'm sure you'll do well, Sandra. It'll be a lot, but it sounds like something you'd be good at and enjoy. There have been so many times in recent years where I've said I don't know where I found the time to do everything when I was younger because my children have moved out and I'm not working and I still don't have any extra time. Somehow we just do. I'm sure you will work it out and be happy that you did.

message 1071: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments I heard Andrew and Fergie are taking back the two dogs they gave her, but no word on the other two. Seeing the Australian media has no joke been 100% only about this for the past 4 days, I will no doubt hear soon and can let you know.

It's like the rest of the world has ceased to exist. It's bloody ridiculous.

We're getting a lot of it too. We get news reports and video clips of Princess Anne curtseying to her mother's casket. Why is that even news?

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Thank you, everyone. ♥️

message 1075: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments I've read about the corgis too. I also saw the family tree of the dogs, since they all come from Susan, a dog the queen got in her 18th (or 21st?) birthday.

message 1080: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Hey everyone! I see the Queen has had quite some discussion. I found out at a comedy festival. So many people didn't know so it was interesting to see the reactions in the crowd. And of course there were a lot of jokes as you'd imagine, especially about Liz Truss being the last person the Queen met with.

I went out for dinner at the weekend and people were singing god save the queen before they ate their dinner. The only thing on normal TV is Queen coverage. Even the little town I live in has dedicated the green for floral tributes. I bet the queen has never even been here so not sure what that's all about other than allowing people to pay their respects I guess if they can't travel to Windsor/London.

I'm not particularly into the monarchy but she seemed lovely.

We get a day off work on the day of the funeral.

Sarah | 18549 comments My boat sold. Everything is done. I'm now no longer a boater. Been taking a bit of time to process that. It hit me harder than I was expecting. But I'm very happy with the new life I have carved out for myself. Things are going well. I spent some time at the weekend making my place a bit more homely. I'd just sorted out bare essentials really but now it feels more comfortable. And my spare room is nearly empty of boxes so can now use it as an office. I'll hold tight until April when I file my tax return then start looking for somewhere to buy hopefully.

message 1082: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Glad it all went well, Sarah, and on to the next part :D

I can understand it would take some time to get used to, just as it was so much of a culture as well as a place to live. Hope you've been able do some things to help with that adjustment, nesting sounds like a good one.

Where are you thinking of looking to buy? Around where you are now?

message 1083: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments I'm glad your boat finally sold, Sarah. I'm sure it feels odd right now, but as you said things are going well in the new stage your are in. Buying your own pace will be another adventure.

I cried when I saw her curtsy. I think it was new because it made me feel her pain. It helped show what she was going through. It broke my heart

Shirley | 1505 comments Just catching up with the convo.
Sarah - Changes are exciting but it takes time to settle to a different way of living. Good on you for taking the step in a different direction.
Sandra - admiring your ability with languages. Congratulations.
The Queen. What a woman she was. A true world leader. And nobody does pomp and ceremony like the Brits. Every little detail has some symbolism attached to it. Fascinating.

I'm sick of hearing about it too Rus. BBC has been covering it 24/7 since she died and, I think, will to do so for the 10 day mourning period. They have nothing left to say so are filling with complete inanities. Yesterday I tuned in as the procession was passing through somewhere in scotland and the crowd were pretty much ignoring it. The presenter said "oh course the Scots don 't show emotion as much as we do here in England".

Great news Sarah! I'm sure you will miss the boaters, it sounded like a great community, but with all the new activities and the new job you should have plenty to keep you busy :-)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments @Sarah: it sounds that you've settled in your new life. Every beginning is difficult, but with little steps you'll get there.

@Sandra: wow, that's big! What do you need to do after that to become a literary translator?

My 9 year old son came home worrying about the corgi's of the queen. He said that only 2 if them will go to the royal family and the others will be donated to good homes.
I think he thought that maybe we would get one of them. Haha, we live in Belgium, but I do love his concern about it.

I've looked in my courses for my 2nd year vet tech and almost got a panic attack. Last year was heavy, this year will double it, at the least...

message 1091: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Those queues to say goodbye to the queen are insane! There's a livetracker, current wait is 9 hours. I read that it could go up to 16 miles and over 30 hours!

There's hardly anything I would be willing to wait more than an hour for, unless it's something to save my life.

It does not exist as a carrier itself, so you have to "build it" in a way. I will know better after talking to my advisor (when I get one assigned) but for what I have seen it is a mixture of target language + translation + literature courses. We'll see.
