What Have You Read - 2022
i really enjoyed this. loved the sci-fi/murder mystery combo. wish there were more books like this out there. i didn't realize how much i need this particular mixture of genres, lol.
I recently finished Under the Skin by Michel Faber. I knew nothing going in and the group I read it with is not a horror group. It was definitely horror! I can't stop thinking about it.

The Dead Hours of Night
I liked these stories well enough, but I find that most of them have already faded from my memory only days after reading them.

I think what I enjoyed about that collection was the voice. Tuttle doesn't do loud or strident, which isn't to say she doesn't occasionally use strong imagery. But, yes, a couple of stories stick with me, but I'd have to review them to recall details of most of them.

Hex was one of the best books I have ever read. I have been looking forward to reading this one.

Thats a book i really want to read too!
I am currently reading
. Was doing it to eventually watch the movie of it before going to see the new Poirot movie that just came out. Alas, life got in the way and I went to see the movie before finishing the book and getting to that movie's book. Got a good 100 phs left to read, its been an interesting read so far and vastly different from the writing style I normally read.
My next book is
WHat I've already finished
February has been "Short Month, Long Book" mini challenge. I have been reading books on my TBR list that are at least 500+ pages. So far I have read:
769 pgs
622 pgs
521 pgs
496 pgs (Close enough for me!)
527 pgsI'm working on
. I'm not sure what will be after that. I think I can squeeze in one more 500+ book this month.
The first novel by Martin M. Goldsmith, author of the novel and film noir classic Detour. Somewhat predictable but a fun story that plays exactly like a film noir of the 1930s or ‘40s—and a pretty good one at that.
Kandice wrote: "That's a good one."yeesss, i really enjoyed it. last fifty pages absolutely gutted me.
I am currently reading
. I am one of the few that thought
was just okay. I am liking ECHO a lot more than I did that one. I'm about halfway through right now.I'm also starting
I finished Battle Royale and am now working on my last "long book" for February For the Thrill of It: Leopold, Loeb, and the Murder That Shocked Chicago
i thought this book was a lot of fun. i got strong vibes of good omens, but if good omens was written for kids and horror, ha ha.
I'm having a John Steakley marathon, if you can call two books a marathon. Mr. Steakley died much too young after writing only two books.... Armor and Vampire$
Ravens of Yellowstone by Russell James
This is the latest in the author's adventure series featuring National Park Service ranger, Kathy West and features gigantic ravens you really wouldn't want to meet on a casual stroll through Yellowstone Park. Of course, with Russell James at the helm, there's a lot more to it than that. This is a quick, enjoyable read. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Just finished reading Gallant by V.E. Schwab
My five star review:

Gothic horror with fantastical elements. Highly recommend.
The last work of fiction I finished was The Dinner by Dutch author Herman Koch. A very classy and literary ambitious thriller, it reminded me a bit of Polanski's Carnage.
Oracle of Ghosts: A supernatural suspense thriller by J.H. Moncrieff
Book 7 of the author's Ghost Writers series, this is more of a fantasy thriller and continues the evolving story of Kate and Jackson as the two of them battle dark forces from the world of ancient gods and goddesses. Great story with some surprising twists and turns.
Not much horror for me in 2022 so far, only bizarro fiction, some Lovecraft classics and non-supernatural thrillers. This one is from the latter category and an excellent read.
Non horror is fine too, Cuniculus.I finished listening to The Seven: The Labyrinth, Book 1 and it was a ton of fun.
I also finished reading Echo which was a bit too long, but otherwise genuinely scary.
even better than the first time i read it! picked up on some stuff i missed the first time around so it still blew my mind, ha ha.

That's one of my all time favorites.
I finished up Sundial
by Catriona Ward and I enjoyed it quite a bit, just not as much as Needless Street. I also read Daniel Barnett's
yesterday and that was wonderful as well.

yay, a new favorite!"
Michael McDowell is so good.
I finished Dissonant Harmonies. It contained two novellas, by two authors, each inspired by a playlist or "mix tape" provided by the other. I thought it was an intriguing premise, and in fact, both authors delivered the goods.

Great idea, but I feel could have been shortened to lessen the repetition of certain elements. Not sure if this is due to the translation though...
