I'm trying to get my head around it too. To maximize points we need to do 4 books in each of #1-4 and then 5 more from any of the 4. I have some time today, so if the mods want some help starting a spreadsheet tab let me know.

Task 1 - Using cover colors would maximize our points and this task makes sense to me. And I think Andy's version of the Last House on Needless Street might work for a black cover!

Task 2 - This one seems pretty straightforward but finding books to fit might not be easy :)

Task 3 - This one seems straightforward as well

Task 4 - This is where I am getting myself confused! Seems like we HAVE to use the books for this task in our main UNO hand, but not sure I completely understand it.

Karolyn | 271 comments I remember a website that was used in another challenge where you could load a cover image and see what percentage of each color the cover is. Does anyone remember what that website is? Or is there one that’s preferred for UNO?

TinEye Color Extratractor, that's what I use to see if my coloured cover is over 50%. Make sure at the bottom though to get rid of the checked-off boxes that exclude the background!

Yeah, I'm confused as well, it's not explicitly clear, except for the one hand, what we need to do.

Edit - oop nevermind, they made a post that clears things up a bit

❀●○●○Ashley○●○●❀ | 390 comments Hold on a sec, so for task 4, we all have to read even more books because we can't double up with the ones we already read for the regular challenge? Hoh, boy, time to break out some really short novels I guess.

I’m reading task 4 that the books count in our “normal” hands. But we need to read a book with X for a 6, W for a 2, or Q for a Skip. And it has to be those exact cards and not a Wild Draw 4 or Wild. And in the process we don’t want to screw up our Draw 2’s either. But that’s just my interpretation. Let’s wait to see what the Mods say.

So… like Narksu said, we’re going to need to do some planning!

Kylie Standley | 83 comments Lucky we picked "The Last House on Needless Street" as the author's last name starts with a W!

I can fill some colored cards for Task 1, as well as another W for 2

That is true! And I thought it'd work for the painting task as well. I think the cover has a classical vibe to me.

So, we're going to have some great fill options.

By the way, I've put up the mini tab. You guys can start claiming. It seems like for the flower cutting portion, we have a lot of wiggle room here to make a lot of points.

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments Karolyn wrote: "Looks like 2 Red is the only color card we could use for Task 4"

Yea, sadly, we only have that one color card with a 2 option. We can try to do a good number of skips if we can. Those have slightly more points then the normal 0-9 cards.

message 364: by Sara (last edited Mar 12, 2022 11:11AM) (new)

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments Also, note to Andy, I've noticed you've claimed Skip cards a few times by using the author's name or book title with the letter "S". I've removed them each time I've seen it, but I just wanted to alert you so you know for the future. Skip cards are either K or P letters. It's the 6 card that using the letter 'S'.

Good call! I was able to move a book I read for a Skip to another slot… so that frees up another Skip for the mini 😄

message 366: by Sara (last edited Mar 12, 2022 11:25AM) (new)

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments Another note, so we need to do 10 tasks minimum for each section, and we can only do a maximum of 45 tasks. So, I've numbered the tasks on our working sheet. Please don't fill past the 10 spot on any section. Right now, that's probably not a big worry, but as we get closer to the end just make sure to keep an eye on the numbers on the rows.

So, we also need to decide which sections that we want to put the extra 5 tasks in, or sections. We can split up across the sections. Personally, I think going for the swap and replace will earn us more points. The double points is really juicy. Higher then any the points we can get from the other sections.

Thank you Karolyn! I'm going through right now and marking with yellow the cards that will be used for the mini swap. I think it'd be a good idea to save those, since the books used for the mini swap have to be the same on the main and the mini. So I'm blocking them off now.

message 368: by Sara (new)

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments Okay, another update. I have blocked off all nine skips we have in our hands.

With the red 2 and all the skips blocked off for the mini, that gives us the maximum amount of points possible for that section.

So, let's try and get all those Skips read! Which means we need to tackle a bunch of Qs. :)

❀●○●○Ashley○●○●❀ | 390 comments Does anyone have anything they want to fit into a Wild Draw 4? I have one filled but the book I want to read works for the new skip letter, and it probably makes more sense to put it there.

Given how many skips we have, I’d suggest using it there. We’ll figure out something else for the Wild Draw 4… we have more flexibility there.

I second Karolyn there. If it works for the new Skip letter, let's use it there. The Wild Draw 4 is much more flexible and easier to fill. And we have plenty of time to find a book that could work there.

Yes, to fill the Skip exchange cards for the 4th section of the mini we need books that work for Q.

Gilead absolutely looks like a classic painting to me. I'm a little more on the fence on the second one. I'll have to take it to the captain's.

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments So the March Mini countdown has just a few hours till March 15th! https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

Since the mini is starting soon, I'm going to go ahead and say we can start our group read at the same time! For the sake of flexibility and the fact I'm sure everyone's schedule is quite busy, I'm just going to go with the format that has everyone read at their own pace. The goal is to finish The House on Needless Street by Friday of this week.

Have fun, and I hope everyone enjoys the read! I'm looking forward to reading it myself and hearing everyone's thoughts on Friday.

I'm not sure it's grey enough, but fantasy painting definitely works.

Tineye says this color is grey and over 70% but in real life it definitely looks purple. Would this work for a purple cover or should I go with grey? Either way, it should work for cover color I think!
