A E I O U

Time to get to hunting! For an easier version, find a book with all 5 located across the title and author's name. To make it harder for yourself, try to find a book where either the title or the author's name have all 5. To make it really hard for yourself, try finding all five in both! Happy hunting!

What book are you reading and what books did you find that would fit the prompt?

Dubhease | 1150 comments I'm going to finally read Letter from the Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King Jr. All the vowels are in his name if you spell out "Junior".

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments I’m planning to use The Trouble with Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon for this prompt.

Loved that book, dalex :)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments I have several possibilities, and I'm only using title for this one.

The Chosen and the Beautiful
The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba
The Once and Future Witches
The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August

Just find a book with "beautiful" in the title and chances are there's another word with an "o" in it!

Nancy, The Chosen and the Beautiful was one of my best books this year! Highly recommend.

message 8: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments I'm definitely going to read it next year, just need to figure out which prompt. I have it down as a possibility for set during 1900-1951 too.

It's been on my reading list for ages! I really must read it next year.

message 10: by Karen (new)

Karen O | 95 comments I'm going to read Too Much Happiness by Alice Munro. It has all 5 vowels both in the title and author's name. I love the economy of it, too: Alice Munro has just five vowels in her name, one of each, and Too Much Happiness has only 6 vowels! Alice Munro is one of my favorite writers.

Sam | 316 comments Nancy wrote: "I'm definitely going to read it next year, just need to figure out which prompt. I have it down as a possibility for set during 1900-1951 too."

I read it at the end of 2020 as an ARC but it's still so memorable and fresh in my mind, echo Emily that this is such a great book and hope you enjoy it too!

I think I am going to use On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong because it has all 5 vowels in both the title and author, and it's been sitting on my shelf for some time!

message 12: by Angie (new)

Angie | 65 comments Agatha Christie seems made for this challenge. I added several titles of hers that work to our listopia. My plan is:

Hercule Poirot's Christmas

Hercule Poirot's Christmas (Hercule Poirot, #20) by Agatha Christie

message 13: by Judy (new)

Judy | 265 comments Euphoria has all five letters in one word.

Sam, that might be the push I need to read On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous!

message 16: by Pam (last edited Oct 13, 2021 09:32AM) (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3837 comments I plan to limit it to books I own and just the author's name, which leaves me with:

Accordion Crimes by Annie Proulx
Talent by Juliet Lapidos
The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout
The History of Love by Nicole Krauss
No Crystal Stair: A Documentary Novel of the Life and Work of Lewis Michaux, Harlem Bookseller by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson
Friend of My Youth by Alice Munro

Alternatively, I might go with just the title, which gives me 6 options.

I read this one this year and I totally recommend!!

message 18: by Steve (new)

Steve | 615 comments I was surprised how many I was able to find off my TBR, so I may do a BIO and limit it to just the title or just the author OR a "must be in AEIOU" order OR "must also include Y."

message 19: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I think I am going to go with The Secret Keeper of Jaipur.

Yes, let's do it, and everyone else who's interested it'll be a fun co-read!

message 22: by Nina (new)

Nina (ninakins) | 334 comments I was surprised at how many books on my TBR would fit this one and am almost tempted to do a BIO where both the author’s name and the title have to have all five vowels. I’ve only found a couple of those, though, and the descriptions don’t thrill me.

Excellent list, Tsipi! Thanks!

message 24: by Sunny (last edited Oct 14, 2021 03:08PM) (new)

Sunny | 125 comments Well darn! I have several suggestions/ideas for this one, but my planning notes got left at home. I'll post again tomorrow sharing the others I came up with.

Here's the one I'm planning on reading:

*Absolution by Murder

Not only do I have A E I O U I got the sometimes Y :)

message 25: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (Medusa's Rock Garden) (medusasrockgarden) | 18 comments Currently considering for this prompt and for the under 5000 ratings prompt:

The Girl and the Mountain by Mark Lawrence

The Weight of a Thousand Oceans by Jillian Webster

Mysterious Ways by Abbie Evans

message 26: by NancyJ (last edited Nov 02, 2021 12:02PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3532 comments Thanks for the great lists! I definitely want to read something by Octavia Butler this year, for the Earth Day prompt, this prompt, or another one.

My BIO for this one will be to choose one that fits one of the rejected prompts.

message 28: by Amy (Other Amy) (new)

Amy (Other Amy) | 690 comments Wow, I was thinking about rereading Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire, but so many other suggestions are on my TBR. I'll leave that one for anyone who wants it.

message 29: by DeeDee (new)

DeeDee | 3 comments I plan to read Persuasion by Jane Austin - all 5 vowels in one word!

message 30: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments I would do Persuasion, but I already read it at least once a year.

message 31: by NancyJ (last edited Nov 02, 2021 11:59AM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3532 comments Dee Dee& Laurel, Persuasion and Euphoria are great choices for this one. They are definitely worthy of reading again.

message 32: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I am looking forward to reading Slashing Through the Snow by Jacqueline Frost and might also read a book by Victoria Laurie for this prompt.

message 33: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3306 comments I using only the author's name for this one. Looking forward to reading of these:

Anything Is Possible - Elizabeth Strout
A Study in Murder (A Victorian Book Club Mystery #1) - Callie Hutton
The Moons of Jupiter - Alice Munro

Me too, Emily. I loved it!

message 35: by D.L. (new)

D.L. | 228 comments I have a ton of cozy mysteries on my shelf that need to be read and this one fits: Murder with Reservations

message 36: by Sydney (last edited Nov 02, 2021 08:17AM) (new)

Sydney Paige (shpaige19) | 71 comments My top contenders for this one are King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo or The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman (I may go with The Blacktongue Thief only because all five vowels are used in the title AND the author's name)

message 37: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1485 comments I'm reading The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. AEIOU and sometimes Y! :) Also, it's included in my Audible subscription. Win-win.

message 38: by Monica (new)

Monica (booksarelove) | 13 comments I'm going to read The Bourne Ultimatum by Robert Ludlum.

message 39: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 711 comments I think I'll read one that has all the vowels in both title and author's name:
Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea

CrystalIsReading on StoryGraph (crystalsea24) | 49 comments I have so many options on my shelves right now. How to Marry Keanu Reeves in 90 Days would be fun. Yellow Bird: Oil, Murder, and a Woman's Search for Justice in Indian Country sounds less fun, but very interesting and relevant. Telesa: The Covenant Keeper is an older YA that retells Samoan myths, by a Samoan American author, and has been on my shelf for years. Never Say You Can't Survive: How to Get Through Hard Times by Making Up Stories is about writing and hope in hard times.Drunk Flies and Stoned Dolphins: A Trip Through the World of Animal Intoxication is about intoxication in the animal world.

message 41: by Regitze Xenia (last edited Dec 03, 2021 03:47AM) (new)

Regitze Xenia (regitzexenia) | 5 comments This prompt messed me up so much. I never knew English only considers Y a vowel sometimes. In Danish it is always a vowel XD

But the upside is that doing it with only the English vowels is a loooot easier than the Danish ones. We also have 3 more in addition to the Y. (Being the characer Æ, Ø and Å, which are sometimes substituted for "A E", "O E" and "A A", just to make it more complicated).

message 43: by Tamula (new)

Tamula | 65 comments I am going to read:
These Vicious Masks -- been meaning to read this one for a long time now.

message 44: by Anne (new)

Anne | 307 comments I am reading 'On the Banks of Plum Creek' by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
One book to fit this prompt is 'The Atom of Delight' by Neil M Gunn and another is 'In the Company of Cheerful Ladies' by Alexander McCall Smith.

message 45: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I listened to Release the Beast by Bimini Bom Boulash for this. I expected this to be more of a memoir, but this was instead a collection of 10 "lessons" - Bimini is such an intelligent, thoughtful person, and I especially loved listening to the parts they spoke on about gender non-conformity (as the mother of a gender non-conforming child myself).

message 46: by Adam (last edited Jan 18, 2022 03:16AM) (new)

Adam Smith (chaos624) | 1197 comments Reading Invaders of the Rokujouma!? Volume 39.

The 39th book in the Rokujouma series. Every book features all five vowels in the title.

This is a very funny Japanese light novel series that surprisingly manages to maintain character development and growth despite being a long running harem drama at the core. The basic premise is a high school boy moving into a rundown one bedroom apartment only for all manner of invaders to appear, ranging from ghosts to aliens to magical girls, deadset on stealing the room out from under him. Well worth checking out. It also had an anime that ended shortly after the end of the first arc.

message 47: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I'm reading Anxious People for this prompt. It has been on my to read list for awhile. I thought this would be a good place for it. I'm 75% into it and I'm enjoying it. It's different from the other books I normally read.

Persuasion would be good for this prompt. That was one of my favorites. There are many more that seem to fit this prompt than what I was originally thinking.

message 48: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 711 comments I read;
Faithful by Alice Hoffman - My Review (many love this but it was not for me)

message 49: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3837 comments I went with all vowels in the author's name: The Aviator by Eugene Vodolazkin. Interesting book but dragged a bit in the middle. It could also be used for #7 Psychology/neuroscience.

message 50: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan J | 9 comments I read Daughters of Chivalry: The Forgotten Children of Edward I for this one. All the vowels are in the title, including the 'sometimes' vowel y!
