Best Neal Stephenson book I've read thus far. I'm impressed by how completely Stephenson is able to ignore the "show don't tell" rule and write something so page-turning.

By addressing the imminent destruction of the earth in fiction, this book helps

"SO GOOD. Love the variety of lady scientists and the detailed world building (though sometimes it's a bit TOO detailed - I did not need that much information about orbital mechanics.) "

Solidly entertaining and gave me way too much to chew on as far as how history repeats itself.

While the bias of the author and editor comes through clearly (they believe that the expropriators were probably not the best thing to happen to Argentina's

A lot of people I respect have said this is one of the best sci-fi novels of all time.

It's also one of the most deeply misogynistic things I've ever read.

Maybe one of the reasons I liked this book so much is that it confirmed the writing style I gravitate towards naturally, especially the discussion of "cycling" as a way to edit-while-you-go and build up momentum.

I like a good adventure story, and this is one of the best there is. It's also so over-the-top racist, from its premise on, I don't even know where to begin. And the "primitivism" espoused, is, unfortunately, a strangely conservative one that has mor ...more

“Maybe because he’d been exiled from paradise by a beast of his own making. Because he’d decided Freedom was home, and he couldn’t come back. That’s what having a home will do to you. Maybe.”
Margaret Killjoy, The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion

“On a whim, I went with him. I could always stab him if he tried anything, after all.”
Margaret Killjoy, The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion

“I was happy to spend some time in the kitchen. It had been a long time since I'd been surrounded by people living the way I wanted to live, and I was almost able to convince myself that things were going to be fine. I've got a long history of scraping together little moments of peace in the midst of hardship, and cooking is a great way to do that.”
