2021 September Pick-it-for-me Challenge

Pickees
✱ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
✱ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.
Pickers
✱ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.
✱ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee's tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.
✱ Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.
A few hints to help with book selection:
✱ Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
✱ Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
✱ Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
✱ Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✱ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) Contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
✱ Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf) This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.
✱ Reminder, you only need to read ONE of your picks to complete this challenge. You will get between 8-16 recommendations, yours to do with what you like. Remember to be kind, the person making your picks has likely put time and effort into making picks they hope you will enjoy.
If you want to volunteer to make repicks:
✱ We love that you want to help out, but please remember those who need picks have been waiting for a long time already. Please only volunteer if you are able to make the repicks within a few hours of the deadline. Thank you!

Please pick for the person below you in your group. The last person in the group will pick for the first person. For example: Alyssa will pick for Romanticbookworm and Mony will pick for Alyssa.
Picks are due August 30th (5 pm US PST)

”Ah September, you are the doorway to the season that awakens my soul.”
It’s September, that magical time of change! Where summer ends and Fall begins (or Winter ends and Spring begins if you live below the Equator!) Either way, change is upon us!
Let’s learn a little about this unique and magical ninth month of the year.
1) September, or ”Septem”, meaning seven in Latin, based on the oldest known Roman calendars, was originally the seventh of ten months. Modern Julian and Georgian calendars place September as the ninth month of the year while September is the sixth month on the astrological calendar. September consisted of 29 days until the Julian reform, which added a day.
Recommend a book with any combination of the numbers 2, 6, 7 or 9 in the title, series or publication date, or with an orange cover, or with an Historical tag.
2) The Sapphire is September’s birthstone, which was once thought to guard against evil and poisoning. They are also thought to encourage divine wisdom and protection. They symbolize purity, truth, trust and loyalty. The Sapphire, along with the related ruby, are the second-hardest natural gemstone after the diamond.
Recommend a book with a necklace on the cover, or with a blue cover or with a character that is considered tough or strong (your interpretation).
3) The September Equinox occurs in September (DUH!). In the Northern Hemisphere this is called the Autumn Equinox, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it is referred to as the Vernal Equinox. This is the moment when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator, heading south. At this point, the length of daytime is almost exactly equal to the length of nighttime.
Recommend a book with a sky on the cover, or with a character who studies or is interested in Science or a book that is published in a ‘Fall’ month (September, October or November).
4) September, the Romans believed, was looked after by the god, Vulcan. As the god of fire and forge, the Romans expected September to be associated with fires, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
Recommend a book with a ‘fiery’ cover (your interpretation), or with a naturally occurring event in the story (your interpretation) or with a Paranormal or Fantasy tag.
5) The Anglo-Saxons called September Gerst Monath (Barley month) because it was the time when they would harvest their barley to make into their favorite drink – barley brew!
Recommend a book with food or beverages in the story or on the cover, with a yellow or brown cover or with a funny or humorous story or character (your interpretation).
6) September’s birth flowers are the Forget-Me-Not, Aster and Morning Glory. All have varying shades of blues, indigos and violets. The aster signifies powerful love and the morning glory symbolizes affection. The forget-me-not symbolizes true love.
Recommend a book with flowers on the cover or in the story, or with a couple you felt had an instant or powerful connection or with a purple cover.
7) Virgo is the primary Zodiac sign for September, until the 22nd when Libra takes over. Virgos are an earth sign, represented by the goddess of wheat and agriculture. They are logical, practical and systematic in their approach to life. Libra is an air sign that is represented by scales. Libras are obsessed with symmetry and strive to create equilibrium in all areas of life.
Recommend a book with a female main character, or with a symmetrical cover (your interpretation), or with an even number in the page count or publication date.
8) September has some fun folklore. Here are just a few:
”Heavy September rains bring drought.”
“Married in September’s golden glow, smooth and serene your life will go.”
“If the storms of September clear off warm, the storms of the following winter will be warm>”
“Fair on September 1st, fair for the month.”
Recommend a book with water or rain on the cover, or with a wedding or celebration in the story, or with a 1 in the page count or publication date.
Happy picking!

Sorry Courtney, it did get a little lost in the announcements! No sorting, but if you want to share what "September" means to you, that's all it is! :)

When I think of September I think of football!
Please use my to-read-asap shelf - thanks!
Just a note to whoever I get paired with - I'm flying across the country on the 25th. I will have internet on my phone and iPad, but not likely on my computer. I will try to post my picks as soon as possible, but I'll be seeing family I haven't visited in over 2 years so my time might be somewhat monopolized.

Happy Reading!

1) September, or ”Septem”
TBR: The Devil Is a Marquess (all three – 279 pages, orangeish cover and historical! :D) Plus I really enjoyed this book!
NEW: The Perils of Pleasure (2,7,9 in pub/page count, Historical tag) Really enjoyed just about each book in this series. There were a few I didn’t care for as much – I mean there are 11 total so odds are??? - but most of them consistently had me burning the midnight oil to finish!

2) The Sapphire is September’s birthstone
TBR: Highland Ever After (Blue cover and gee, he looks pretty strong! 😉)
NEW: Silent in the Grave (strong character and necklace on cover) Loved this whole series from this author! I read it out of order, reading Dark Road to Darjeeling first, but glad I went back and read the earlier books.

3) The September Equinox occurs in September
TBR: Highlander's Heart (October publish, sky on cover)
NEW: The Luckiest Lady in London (Science interest and published in November) This one was totally in my mind when I added the Science picking rule! The author surprises me as well with her fascinating stories and well-researched characters! If you enjoy this one, may I also suggest Not Quite a Husband and The One In My Heart! Other faves of mine and both could have qualified for this criteria.

4) September, the Romans believed, was looked after by the god, Vulcan.
TBR: Heartless (Paranormal tag and that’s a fiery hot cover if you ask me! :D)
NEW: Firelight (fiery cover, Paranormal tag) This one surprised me and this author continually surprises me with her fascinating characters and stories. Loved this whole series!

5) The Anglo-Saxons called September Gerst Monath (Barley month)
TBR: When Stars Collide (yellow cover) Sounds interesting!
NEW: Well Met (food in story, funny story) A fun story set behind the scenes at a Renn Faire! Giant turkey legs and lots of beer as the MC is a tavern wench.

6) September’s birth flowers are the Forget-Me-Not, Aster and Morning Glory.
TBR: The Rogue of Fifth Avenue (purple cover and instant connection) I enjoyed this one!
NEW: Vision in White (flowers on cover) Sweet and satisfying story. I’m hopefully reading the last one in the series this month, but Mack, in this one is my favorite still.

7) Virgo is the primary Zodiac sign for September,
TBR: The Most Dangerous Duke in London (Female MC, symmetrical cover – the gold bow bisects the cover evenly!) This one's on my TBR too!
NEW: Duke of Midnight (female MC, even page count) I saw you’ve read a couple of books in the Maiden Lane series and I noticed you loved #3, which is tied as my favorite of the whole series with this one, #6. May I suggest this one as well? I really loved the heroine, Artemis, in this book. She was just what His Grace, the Ass needed! She was the yin to his yang IMHO! But then I'm a sucker for a damaged hero and the strong heroine who rescues him...

8) September has some fun folklore. Here are just a few:
TBR: Don't Play With Odin (1 in pub date)
NEW: Heartstone (1 in pub date and celebration in story) I was surprised how much I actually liked this story, though I definitely recommend listening to the audiobook if you can (it was free with Kindle Unlimited and my library if that helps!). This is essentially Pride and Prejudice meets dragons! However, that’s about where the similarities end. The story spins off in its own direction and turned out to be entertaining. And the audiobook, the narrator does an amazing job with accents that really pulled me in!

Happy reading!

Loving the Pennyroyal series. Still to read The Perils of Pleasure by Julie Anne Long (book #1). Love her writing!

What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?
The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.
The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.
You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!
After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super-secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.
In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations.
PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)
Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!
Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:
✱ The books picked for you are not yet released.
✱ If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✱ If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.
You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✱ A book is not available at your library.
✱ A genre or author you don’t enjoy.
INFORMATION NEEDED TO SIGN UP
Please sign up in this thread with the answer to the following question:
✱✱ No sorting this month! To enter the challenge, just share what you think of when September rolls around! ✱✱
✱✱ If you have a preferred shelf, please list it along with your pick! ✱✱
IMPORTANT DATES

For your convenience a Time Zone Converter.
