Haha right?? The app is crazy sometimes.

great

What do you like to read? I think you could find earth topics in almost any type of fiction. Any aspect of nature, any type of pollution. A thriller with a nuclear or bioweapon threat. A book set at the time of major earthquake, wild-fire, or tsunami. A book with a character who works with nature, or set in a forest or rain forest.
You could look at your favorite genre and search for books with Earth, nature or trees in the title. Science and Sci-fi books might have pictures of earth from space.
The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit

Thanks Emily. The time change gives me a little time at the beginning, before I have to leave for my appointment.
I was planning to suggest something related to psychology, neuroscience or the mind, for the rejects list if nothing else. Psychology topics can be found in all sorts of fiction - Personality, perception, motivations, self-esteem, emotions, emotional control, thinking, ethics, habits, needs, motivation, groups, conflict, resilience, extroversion, stability, empathy, narcissism, need for achievement, need for power, need for affiliation, well being, optimism, happiness, leadership, etc. Positive Psychology, developmental, social, organizational psychology. (I'm feeling sick right now, so I might lose focus before I can make any lists.)
I was also hoping you might resubmit your disability idea or something similar.
I'm also hoping for a submission on friendship, up-lit, hope punk, or related terms. I really love books that can pull off a perfect combination of pathos and optimism.
A book with a journalist author, journalist character, or journalism topic
There are very few genres on the overall list. Maybe it doesn't matter because you can fit anything in, but I could use a little incentive to explore more sci-fi.
There seem to be a lot of variations on People-Tech mixes - Artificial intelligence, Cyborgs, Implants, transhumanism, minds uploaded to computers, AI loaded into a human body.
There is always a lot of complaining when the results come out. I wish people would spend more time talking about they would to see like on the list.
On the results page I asked "What is the list missing that would make you happy?"

I really hope Goodreads Choice doesn't come back. I would like a year without it.

A book by an author with 3 names
A book with a character who has a disability
A book with a character who loves books
A book related to the lyrics of "Bohemian Rhapsody"
A book shelved as literary fiction
A book connected to bees
A book about a woman who changed history
A book with a main character that fits at least one of “mad, bad and dangerous to know”
A book that has been nominated for the Goodreads Choice Awards
A book with a theme of exploration
A winner or nominee from the 2021 Goodreads Choice Awards
Some of these might no longer be eligible, or there might have been a similar prompt voted in.

I get a lot of good ideas from the choice awards, especially the nf categories, so I suppose a prompt ensures that we look at it at least. My problem with the choice awards is that they're too early to be meaningful. People end up voting for books they didn't read (or the only book they read in a category), or maybe they vote for favorite authors.
As someone who doesn't read a lot of sci-fi, I think the alternate worlds prompt and the non-human character prompt cover sci-fi a good bit... maybe not enough for a sci-fi lover, but I think both those prompts could skew sci-fi if you want them to.
Our list is so well-balanced this year! It's hard for me to pick a category that I think we need to add because we have a good mix. I may suggest a genre prompt just because it's the least used, but 3 is still a good number for it.

Isn't it funny that when we state our opinions ourselves, it's fine but when other people do it, it's "complaining"? Food for thought.
Anyway, I feel like people are doing exactly what you are asking. If we look at all the "complaint" posts, the majority also say what they do want on the list "ex. "I was hoping for the such and such prompt to get through", or "I am surprised that such-and -such" didn't get through, I really loved that one") There is very valuable information in those posts that can guide those of us who are comfortable making suggestions.

Browsing through past ideas, I would love to see:
bees
AI
something about the brain
breaking barriers
a shot in the dark
soul
literary fiction
anti-hero/heroine
translation
another category that sends us to read an author from another country that I don't commonly read (I know this one probably won't make it through, though)
a cover color (I love searching for books by color, and we don't have ANY color prompts)
I will always downvote anything to do with Goodreads Choice Awards, or a song or music in general. I just don't enjoy linking my reading with music. Sure, if they get through, I can manage, but they are not my preferred categories.

I know there is a fine line between complaining and suggesting things.

I love bees (or rabbits) and cover color. I find those things fun because it forces me to narrow down a book in a way I wouldn't normally.
Some random ideas that are probably not going to be popular because they aren't necessarily "fun" and aren't from previous polls:
+ A book published in a year that is a multiple of 22 (e.g. 1958, 1980, 2002, etc.)
+ An award-winning middle-grade book
+ A book less than 220 or more than 440 pages
+ A graphic novel memoir
+ A book with T, W, and O in the title (or author's name)
I know some people are burnt out on the "22" connections, but I'm still here for them.
Maybe a wild idea to combine three things would be "A book with a red cover" because Taylor Swift's song 22 was off of her "Red" album? None of that has to be stated, but it has more of a connection than a completely random color at least.

It's funny how we have kneejerk reactions - my eyes glaze over as soon as I see numbers, such as page numbers, year published, etc. Although between 220 and 440 is something I can comprehend, though I think it's too easy, as most books many of us read would qualify.
I really appreciate all the new ideas though, if they don't get in, save them for next year!

Katie, I think your list of prompts found some gaps that could be filled on our list. We don't have a page length or publication date prompt (outside of published in 2022, which doesn't really count lol).
I think the award winning middle-grade book could be covered by the Powell's list (if I'm remembering the list correctly), and I do feel like we have enough title prompts now with our newest addition.
RachelG, I would also like another genre prompt but up-lit has been suggested every year and has never made it in, so as much as I love it, I don't know if it's the one to suggest. What about suggesting a specific subgenre? Some thoughts:
locked room mystery (https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...)
historical romance (https://www.goodreads.com/genres/hist...)
time travel romance (https://www.goodreads.com/genres/time...)
historical thriller (https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...)
I found this list and now I want all of these genres to make the final list lol https://www.servicescape.com/blog/144...

It's funny how different our brains work!
I actually suggested less than 220 or more than 440 pages (not in between) for just the reason you mentioned! Since that either qualifies as a short book or a longer one (though not necessarily a doorstopper, I guess), it gives people the options for short or long and is kind of year-related.
I can definitely see it as being easy to misread though, which could be a problem.
I would be into a subgenre prompt but agree with Emily that it should be specific, not one of your choosing, since that makes it a freebie (imo).

I like this suggestion! I wonder how hard it would be to find... I think I will head to my tbr,

I love seeking out short books, so I would definitely vote for "less than 220 pages"! That's a nice number, limiting enough to feel like a challenge, but not TOO limiting.
Due to some schedule changes, SUGGESTIONS FOR POLL 17 WILL GO LIVE AROUND 9 AM CST. Sorry for the last-minute change!!

Romance never flies in this group, so while I would like that, I doubt it would get in. I would also enjoy historical thriller!! I read historical fiction, and I read thrillers, but I don't think I've ever read a historical thriller. (Correction: that shelf includes mysteries as well as thrillers - there is a lot of overlap between mysteries & thrillers, so that makes sense - and I have read some historical mysteries. I'd be happy to read another!!)

The link to this genre is https://www.goodreads.com/genres/portal
I also had thought of suggesting a graphic novel or manga but I realize that this might be a real challenge for some people just like reading romance is for me.

I agree. Between 220 and 440 would be MOST of the books I read, but I would really like a prompt for a shorter book!
Thomas, I think "love story" is different from a romance book, because you can find a love story in pretty much any genre. But I get what you're saying.
RachelG, I like portal fantasy, but we do already have an alternate worlds prompt, so people may not want portal fantasy as well.

In honor of 22 being two 2's....
"A book related to a famous pair."
2. A book related to a famous pair
Romeo & Juliet; Rocky and Bullwinkle; Antony and Cleopatra; peanut butter and jelly; Bert and Ernie; left and right; yin and yang; hot and cold; yes and no
Historical fiction about famous people (like Philippa Gregory's The Other Boleyn Girl), books with black and white covers, books with pairs in the title like Yes No Maybe So
You can read a book that created a famous pairing like Romeo & Juliet, Pride & Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, The Great Gatsby. You can read a book with a pair in the title like East, West, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. You could read A Tale of Two Cities. You could read The Tao of Pooh for the concept of yin and yang.
You could literally read "Romeo and Juliet". Some books that come to mind for me are:
Beatrice and Benedick by Marina Fiorato (Beatrice and Benedick from Shakespeare's "Much Ado about Nothing")
Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley (Beauty and the Beast)
Robin and Marian by Stephanie Fowers (Robin Hood and Maid Marian)
Bud & Lou: The Abbott & Costello Story by Bob Thomas ( Famous Comedy Duo: Abbot and Costello).
Strange Case of Dr. Jekell & Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (Good and Evil)

I like this idea, and I think I never voted for it because there were other ideas I liked more in each poll.

Cover - 4
Theme - 5

Aaarghh! So sorry I misread your suggestion. Totally typical of me to get details wrong and still broadcast my opinion! I see it's correct on the voting thread.

Oh, thanks for bringing it up again, Jillian! I nominated it again not knowing it was also being discussed here. I can't remember if I first nominated it in the 1st or 2nd poll, but I've been hoping it gets through for awhile! It always seems to get positive reviews, so maybe this time.... !
