Lára | 479 comments Just started City of Stairs and already can't put it down. Such an interesting story so far.

Also Swordspoint that's very entertaining.
I have some other books going on, but I'll focus on these two for now, since they're both so engaging.

Nicholas Kotar (ravenson) | 14 comments I'm thinking of reading American Gods. Any thoughts?

Read it.

message 5: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (asfus) | 56 comments I a reading From Chaos Born (In Her Name The First Empress, #1) by Michael R. Hicks

message 6: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (asfus) | 56 comments Typo not used to my laptop yet....

message 7: by Jasprit (new)

Jasprit (jas4u) I just started reading The Prince of Nothing - The Darkness That Comes Before. The character names are kind of hard to keep track of but it should get better after I read some more.

It's an excellent book so far. The writing is unbelievably gripping.

I'm readingFirefight, although my kindle keeps crashing. Have tried a factory reset so hoping that works and I can read the rest.

message 9: by Sandy (last edited Feb 01, 2015 12:18PM) (new)

Sandy (kidmarathon) | 11 comments Just started Fool's Assassinby Robin Hobb. I feel like I have put on my slippers and a blanket and fell right in to an old friend. I hope the story is worth the 667 pages.

I'm sure it will be, love her books.

message 11: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (allrianne) Finished off Brisingr this morning. Readable but boring most of the time.

About to start The slow regard of silent things. I love Pat Rothfuss' writing so I'm hoping to enjoy this after the tedium of Christopher Paolini's first three books in the Inheritance cycle.

Also dipping into The elephant in the classroom for work.

message 12: by Alissa (new)

Alissa | 220 comments Grand Conspiracy and after that, Peril's Gate. If daily circumstances allow, Traitor's Knot is on my February deck, too. I keep reading the excellent Wars of Light and Shadow series, it's awesome epic fantasy.
@ Lára I liked City of Stairs, a very peculiar book, recommended!
@ Jasprit let us know how you like The Darkness That Comes Before, it's one of my planned reads :)
@ Helen Should my kindle app die, the word panic wouldn't even start to describe my feelings ... hope your kindle is back to working mode now

message 13: by Charles (new)

Charles (charliewhip) | 223 comments Alissa, I am so glad that Janny has another intelligent, dedicated reader. To me, she is probably the most deeply sophisticated of fantasy writers. Her work is so amazing.

message 14: by Heather (new)

Heather (bruyere) The Providence of Fire here! Then I'll start City of Stairs.

Brisingr was hard to get through. I saw the reviews on the last book and gave up. Sad, but life's too short.

Slow Regard is tedious but I think if I had read a page or two at a time it would have been better. It's about nothing, afterall (I did audiobook).

message 16: by Ian (new)

Ian Hall | 169 comments I have recently purchased alot of books but the book i am looking forward to reading the most is traitors blade by sebastian de castell.

message 17: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sandyy1603) Just went to the library yesterday, 7 fantasy books, reading Shifting Shadows, Patricia Briggs, love her work.

message 18: by Matt (new)

Matt | 20 comments Just finished Ossard's Shadow by Colin Taber, something I had been waiting on for quite some time. It took a little while to get back into, but I enjoyed the second half in particular, and he left us with another good cliffhanger *shakes fist*.

Now onto Before They Are Hanged, my second taste of Joe Abercrombie. Only a few chapters in but enjoying it already.

message 19: by Amy (new)

Amy Sanderson | 129 comments I really wanted to read City of Stairs for the Group Read, but then I went on a book buying spree last week and decided I wasn't allowed to buy any more new books this month. *grins*

So, I've just read We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, which isn't my usual fantasy fare but very good all the same. Next I think I might catch up on some GRRM. I must have read Game of Thrones over a decade ago, but I still haven't read the newest in the series!

message 20: by Olga (new)

Olga Godim (olgagodim) | 85 comments Just finished All the Turns of Light, a sequel to All the Paths of Shadow. Sadly, after the wonderful first book of the series, this one was a disappointment.

Alissa | 220 comments Charles wrote: "Alissa, I am so glad that Janny has another intelligent, dedicated reader. To me, she is probably the most deeply sophisticated of fantasy writers. Her work is so amazing."

Hi Charles! Thank you :) Oh yes you're right, I proudly declare I'm a fan of Janny Wurts, she's making me rediscover the whole epic fantasy genre. I cannot really believe how I could have missed her, and I'm very happy to be reading the Wars of Light and Shadow series now.

message 22: by Josh (new)

Josh Just started The Red Knight by Miles Cameron and so far so good. Whittleing away at The Magicians by Lev Grossman one small chunck at a time. Ive mastered the art of putting a book down when it starts to bore me and picking it back up sometime later with fresh excitement and interest.

message 23: by Deedee (new)

Deedee Just started Blood Red.

message 24: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Infidel; next up: Rapture.

Hi, since the factory reset, crossing fingers for typing this, my kindle seems to be fine. Although, having to download all my books one at a time :(

message 27: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 282 comments Still finishing up A Deepness in the Sky from January (I stupidly got a MMPB and the font is way too small to read!) but have started Kraken and The Price of Spring....
I have a busy BotM month, and so I still have City of Stairs, The Sheep Look Up, The Three-Body Problem and Worldwired on deck for this month....

message 28: by Helen, I·ᴍ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ʟɪʙʀᴀʀʏ (new)

Helen | 3616 comments Mod
You can do it, Maggie. I was going to get Sherlock out of the way next but might have to start Malazan.

message 29: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 282 comments I am just glad I have read Gardens a couple times already...lol

message 30: by Nigel (new)

Nigel Percy I'm reading Lev Grossman's The Magician and The Magician King. Quite like the humor in there, although there are some big plot gaps. Maybe he'll sort them out in the end...

message 31: by Alice (new)

Alice Witch Week. Can never go wrong with a bit of Diana Wynne Jones! :D

message 32: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (allrianne) I've finished The slow regard of silent things and A natural history of dragons this week. I enjoyed both and found I got through them quickly despite the lack of time I can give to reading.
I've decided I'm going to work alphabetically through my books from now on, so Joe Abercormbie's Before they are hanged and Terry Brooks' The sword if Shannara are next.

message 33: by TS (new)

TS Chan (tschan) City of Stairs is in my to-read list but I've too many unread books in my e-reader to justify a new purchase now (unless Stormlight 3 comes out like now, hehe). I am planning to attempt reading the Malazan series starting with Gardens of the Moon this month.

message 34: by Michele (new)

Michele I read Calculating God which was interesting as a conversation about God and science, but much too contrived in the plot.

Listening to Hominids now - Sawyer has some very intriguing ideas in his books, though the execution is not always the best.

Blasted through the Muirwood trilogy by Jeff Wheeler and really liked it. It had a very classic fantasy feel to it, but fresh enough, and a great female MC who was very feisty.
The Wretched of Muirwood
The Blight of Muirwood
The Scourge of Muirwood.

And now I'm charging right through the Ben Aaronovich urban fantasy series, which I'm loving - just started book 4. I really like that the MC is just learning about magic and he's very gung ho, like a kid in a candy store - nice change from the burnt out, cynical detective noir thing. He's still snarky though :)
Midnight Riot
Moon Over Soho
Whispers Under Ground

I think I'm burnt out on the grimdark stuff - both of these series have dark happeneings, but the overall tone is just less bleak and I'm enjoying having good guys and women to root for :)

message 35: by Lára (new)

Lára | 479 comments I'm still reading City of Stairs and really like it, but I've made a mistake and after finishing Swordspoint, which was amazing, started reading Red Seas Under Red Skies and now I'm so into the book that I just can't make myself to pick City of Stairs again - not until I'm done with Red Seas Under Red Skies anyway.

And I so want to read some manga but can't make myself to pick one either. I really shouldn't have started with 2nd S.Lynch's book. I like this one 3 times more than the 1st one

Glad I'm not the only one! I liked 'Red Seas' a lot more than the first book, too, although it seemed to have much poorer reviews when it came out.

I bought the Muirwood books in a sale, good to know that they're good.

message 38: by Bill (new)

Bill (kernos) | 324 comments I'm reading the 2nd Cassandra Kresnov novel Breakthrough by Joel Shepherd

I recently finished:

The Final Solution by Michael Chabon—a mystery about a missing parrot investigated by a doddering old "Sherlock Holmes"-like character. Wonderful! as is Chabon generally.

{book:House of Glass|21446092] by James Maertens book 1 of a YA+, Celtoid, Harry Potter like fantasy with a literary bent.

Crossover the 1st book in the href="https://www.goodreads.com/series/51705-cassandra-kresnov">Cassandra Kresnov series by Joel Shepherd. The series is a far future political/military epic Sci-Fi. The action never lets up. It's pure fun.

The Merro Tree by Katie Waitman one of the best alien-oriented Sci-Fi's I've read. It's on my favorites shelf.

Next up the be The Complete Lyonesse by Jack Vance. I've read Poul Anderson's King of Ys series. A comparison will be fun.

message 39: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Rapture, the last of Kameron Hurley's Bel Dame Apocrypha novels, and am moving onto something considerably lighter (I hope) -- Covenant's End by Ari Marmell.

message 40: by Katja (new)

Katja Koschel I started Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey. And it's really great and really mean.

message 41: by Edward (new)

Edward Ryan (edwardkryan) We Fought Back Teen Resisters of the Holocaust

My son has to read it for school so i am reading it with him... Very good and unsettling...

message 42: by Michele (new)

Michele "really mean" - it's dark, funny too, but dark. Like "I need a shower and a drink and a hug now" dark ;)

message 43: by Anish (new)

Anish I just started "The Moon Moth and other stories" by Jack Vance..heard a lot about this author..hope that it meets expectations!

message 44: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Covenant's End -- a great end to a great series -- and am starting an anthology, Sword & Mythos. Because sword & sorcery and Lovecraftian horror should go together like chocolate and peanut butter. And tentacles. Lots and lots of tentacles.

Cheers, I've barely touched the surface, very slow and tedious.

Oh, and I'm reading Gardens of the Moon. I'd been preparing to whisper to Maggie that I didn't think I was positive that I could even possibly (like) it. But, I do. It's suddenly grabbed me by the collar.
