ama (just so that you know, your character can do anything they want whenever they want as long as it's yknow reasonably humanly possible. there's no rules, the plot functions best when characters actually live instead of doing programmed things! the most important thing is for them to stay in character!)

Kalisse’s words seem to calm Horizon, but something in the back of her mind flashes red with warning. She already knows Kalisse has lied to her, many times. This may be no different. Rize pushes the uneasy feeling aside, forcing herself to stay alert and wary. Her amber eyes glint as she watches Kalisse carefully.
Horizon reclines slightly in the chair, looking somewhat relaxed but ready to move in an instant.
“The beginning,” she echoes, flatly, noting how pathetically hollow her words sound. “Let’s.”

ama (!! Content Warning!! Kalisse's past is pretty traumatic)

Kalisse taps something on the holographic screen and an image of the Training Academy of District 2 appears.

"This was my dream. My only goal in life," she whispers, staring at the image wistfully. "I had always been told that for me to succeed in life, I had to make it there. I had to get first place and Volunteer into the Games. You know, winning is just a small part of it all. The Capitol never really understood that.

Anyways, my parents had connections, you see."

A few taps from her finger and pictures of a woman and a man appear on the screen, looking a bit like Kalisse. Clearly, they are Kalisse's parents.

"Those connections included Mr. Spartaca, Headmaster of the Academy."

An image of Mr. Spartaca flashes on the screen but disappears immediately,  as if he was too disgusting to be seen for more than a moment.

"I knew I wasn't as talented as some others in the Academy. I knew I would never make it. So the Headmaster agreed to get me to the top rankings if I did a few favors for him."

She glosses over the 'favors', not really wanting to think back at that and not wanting to bother Horizon with it either.

"And I did. And he did as promised. At the end of my first year? Boom. There I was. First place."

A picture flickers on the screen. It looks like Kalisse, except she is younger, with reddish hair and green eyes and freckles, nothing like the Kalisse Horizon knows. Above the picture is a newspaper heading:

'Ameïko Valen places first in Academy.'

"Ah yes, that was my name at the time," Kalisse chuckles, as if truly amused by it. "It didn't fit me very much, don’t you agree? Nothing really fit me very much, but I guess that's besides the point."

She admitted sighs before continuing.

"I was quite popular at the Academy. Everyone admired me. It was amazing. I had a lot of friends. I continued on for a few years, still in first place as promised, even though of course, skill-wise, people deserved that place more than me. But I had no remorse back then, you know? I don't fucking know how I managed to be so careless."

Her expression darkens and her voice turns much more serious. "Things were happening behind the scenes, though. Never quite figured out what. But before I knew it-"

She snaps her fingers and an image pops up. Another newspaper photo, this one of dead bodies covered in blood.

"- most of my friends were dead." She chuckles again, but this time it feels much more plastic. Much more faker. "Go figure.

Of course, I was traumatized. I thought I was next. I was an idiot, you know. I continued on but the deaths affected me much more then they should have. Well, I'm not judging myself. Anyone would be traumatized, I'd expect. But I still shouldn't have been. Because then, I slipped. It was clear that I was completely weakened and damaged by the deaths and people started getting suspicious when I was still in first place in the Rankings even though I was failing pathetically like a little bitch."

She sighs and bites her lip, more troubled by the memories than she estimated.  She pauses for an instant to re-order her thoughts.

"And then Andreija came along. She was the daughter of the Headmaster. Everyone loved her more than me. She was much younger than me, but much more talented than me. She deserved her first place that she was getting in her age group's Rankings. She was a spoiled bitch, of course, but nobody cared about that. Everyone blamed me for my friends' deaths. I was the scapegoat for everything bad that happened in the Academy, because I dared cheat in the Rankings." She laughs a bit. "Honestly,  I deserved it. I ruined all these people's chances to go die in a death game, oh no, the horror," she mutters sardonically. "I was the scapegoat,  Andreija was put on a pedestal.

After a while, I couldn't take it anymore so I left.  Left the District. Completely changed my appearance and used the money I had earned from the Academy to get myself a few small surgeries so it would be even harder to recognize me. I went to the Capitol, stowed away in a train. I almost died multiple times, Peacekeepers coming close to finding me. But I made it. Here. The hard way. "

She glances away, outwards to the window. "This glorious metropolis," she whispers.

Then she turns back to Horizon and continues her tale, but with more pain in her voice. "You know, the Gamemaker Academy doesn't give a fuck where you come from. When I applied, they saw my good ideas and took me in. Finally something I was good at, without cheating. Finally I looked forward to another day." A small tear slips down her cheek but she blinks away the rest of the waterworks, needing to keep strong in front of Horizon.

"It just all went naturally after that. I got the job. Everything was going perfectly.

Except, well, I never felt like I belonged. I fell in love with Persephone,  but I was still fake. Persephone would hate me if she knew me.  Really knew me. I'm a coward.

There you go.   That’s the not important stuff."

She sniffles a little, her voice breaking. "You ready for the really important stuff?"

As Kalisse’s story comes tumbling out, Horizon finds herself oddly intrigued. Sure, she’s heard buts and pieces of the story Kalisse fabricated for herself, but never in much detail and never with this sort of honesty. She finds herself startled, but not surprised. Rize listens intently, almost forgetting the subtle threat hanging over them. Almost. But not entirely.

“Ameïko,” she murmurs softly, eyes on the hologram before her. “I like it.”

Horizon’s brow furrows at the next newspaper image—the one of death. She’d never heard of that happening, but then again, the 2nd District would have reasons to keep things secret.

At the name Andreija, Rize leans in slightly. Andreija. That was the D2 tribute, right? So Kalisse had known her? All of a sudden, things began to make sense. That was what yesterday was all about. Her comment. Her tone. Her vibe. It was because she resented them, resented the second district.

For some reason, Horizon wants to say something. She wants to say, thanks for telling me, or, it’s gonna be alright. She wants to help in some way, but can’t. A week ago, she would’ve pulled Kalisse into a hug right then and there, but not now. Not anymore. They’re too far gone.

And so all she can do is stay mute, nod, and brace herself for the “important stuff.”

ama Kalisse grabs a pen from the penholder on the table and waves it in front of Horizon's face, almost teasingly.

"Funny thing is," she says, "I've been lying. I've been one-hundred-percent a fraud all my life. I never achieved anything in my true worth." She says it like she's joking, she's smiling, but yet, at the word 'fraud', her voice breaks, like a shard of sorrow pierced deep within her.

"You see -and this is a little known fact- I was contacted by District 13 a while after my friends died. The leader … her name was Nuska …" she falters, her voice becoming more distant, more dreamy. "... she told me she could fix my life. Get me to work for a good cause. I was desperate. And broken." Her gaze hardens as she takes a shaky breath, wanting to keep her facade while talking to Horizon but unable to uphold it any longer. "So I accepted. They're the ones who got me out of District 2-" she has another of those fake, hollow chuckles "-or 'the second District,' as you would say. They changed me. They took away my name. They took away the appearance I had. They took away my previous convictions and made me into someone else entirely. Someone who would fit their plan.

I no longer recognized myself when I looked in the mirror.

And I liked it."

She blinks away a steam of tears threatening to spill out of her eyes.

"They erased me. All the shameful, idiotic things that made me who I used to be. All gone. And it was perfect."

She smiles, a smile filled with bitterness, with regret, as she finally lets the sardonic mask slip. As she finally reveals her truth to Horizon.

"The leader of the rebellion,  Nuska, was a year younger than me. We kind of fell in love." Kalisse shrugs, but it is practically transparent that there are a lot of knots of emotions tied to that sentence. "I mean, I don't know why she fell in love with me. I faked and fucked my way up to the top and here she was leading a rebellion in a broken District. But then again, she did re-model me into the person I am today. She leads everything back there, including the team that changed me. I guess she made me into something perfect for her."

Kalisse looks away, her thoughts drifting as she is kind of out of it for a moment. But she returns to reality and says:

"Not perfect enough, though. Because a month after she sent me to the Capitol. With a fake history, so that I could slip my way into the Gamemaking Academy. And she made sure, along with her team. I was still on top of my class.  On top of the rankings. I  was still a fraud."

She spits out the word with so much pain in her voice that it's almost pitiable. Or pathetic. Depends on how you look at it.

"Of course I graduated. And made it here. I wasn't supposed to fall in love with Persephone,  though. That was a little mistake."

She stabs the table with her pen angrily, though also absent-mindedly.

"A little mistake that Nuska didn't appreciate," Kalisse continues. "After that, whenever she'd secretly call me to get updates -because, if you haven't guessed yet, I was sent here to spy. But of course you've guessed that. You're so fucking smart, Horizon- she'd always be hurtful towards me. Bitter. It was pathetic, admittedly. And petty of her, if you ask me. But I also deserved it, and it didn't stop it from shattering me to the very core. By then, either the people who knew the true me hated me, or the people who cared about him didn't know the true me.

It was a little painful," she says and tilts her head annoyedly, sarcastically.

"And, well, I was pretty sure you had figured me out, so I told her."

She looks up and stares at Horizon dead in the eyes.  Her crystalline blue eyes are unreadable as she says:

"So Nuska told me to bring you down here. Which I did. And she told me to lock its sound-proof doors. Which I did.

And she also told me to kill you."

Horizon shakes her head just slightly, blindly risking a moment with eyes closed before opening them again. The expression in her gaze was unreadable, a mix of emotions that even she couldn’t decipher. Rize was a Gamemaking intern, right? So many ugh she was perfect for this job… but then why was she so dang bad at controlling her emotions? A Gamemaker shouldn’t be uncertain, they shouldn’t feel regret or fear, they shouldn’t be threatened. But then here she was. Maybe Horizon isn’t really cut out for this…

And when Kalisse confirms her connections, Horizon’s heart seems to falter. District 13. The suspected home of the rebellion. Darn it. She opens her mouth to speak, but only gapes like a fish for a moment, unable to make anything audible pass through her lips. No matter how much she had tried to convince herself otherwise, tried to lie to cover it up, tried to make things seem right in her twisted mind, the truth was always there—she just made herself too blind to truly see it. Kalisse was a traitor. A full-blown traitor.

Despite the circumstances, a small selfish part of Horizon wonders if it was all really a lie. All the time they’d spent together. Was it really just a mission to infiltrate the Capitol? Rize had thought Kalisse took her on for a reason, but was that reason just for the rebellion? Horizon doesn’t know. She just doesn’t know.

But now her heart stops for real. In a moment the reality of the situation hits her. Abandoned room. Soundproof walls. Locked door. It’s all too perfect.

Horizon is out of her chair on an instant, eyes blazing with a frostbiting blaze. “So that’s it, huh?” She fights to keep her voice steady. “Your little ‘assignment’ is to get rid of me now? Is it one of those ‘you know too much’ sort of situations? I guess I should feel honored.” Rize’s chuckle is empty, hollow. As if she’s already given up. “What, are you hoping doing whatever your damn girlfriend wants will get her to like you again? Sorry to burst your morbid little bubble, but I doubt she’d ever really care for a turncoat like you.”

ama Kalisse looks away, stung by the words. She wishes she could smile, pretend it was nothing, maybe even chuckle evilly, since Horizon seemed to think she was a demon.
She bites her lip as she hesitates, and then the tangy taste of blood, originating from her bit lip, starts reaching her mouth and she forces herself to look back to Horizon.
The next words she speaks feel like agony to say without breaking down.
"Nuska's not my girlfriend. Not anymore. Persephone's my girlfriend-" Kalisse stops abruptly and looks at the ceiling, as if she heard something. But then she continues like nothing happened. "No, you know what, nobody's my girlfriend. Nobody likes a ... a turncoat like me, as you like to say. I ..." She stands up and fiddles with her pen, hesitant. "... I wouldn't expect you to like a turncoat like me either, but I'd just like you to know that the times we spent as friends was real. Because I'm sure you're doubting it all right now."
Her gaze flickers at the window, and she says, "but you know what, that won't matter in a minute or so, won't it not?"

Horizon’s heart pounds, fast and hard. Whether it’s from anticipation of what’s to come or being in the moment, she isn’t sure. But it seems so loud… Can Kalisse hear it?

“Well I hope not,” she comments, almost daintily. “Any person who sends others to do their dirty work doesn’t deserve it.” Her amber eyes flash with a glimpse of something a bit less cold, but are instantly hostile once more. “But why listen to her? If she really hurt you all that bad, why still risk it all to follow her?” Maybe, Horizon mused, it’s the same as me. We want to fit in, in an odd sort of outcast, odd-one-out kind of way. But still.

For a girl destined to fight and win the Hunger Games, Rize was a sorry case. Long ago she had resigned herself to the fact that she might die, and she’d been fine with it. She was the girl who never feared anything, and yet… Maybe Capitol life had softened her. Crazy as it sounds, maybe Gamemaking had weakened her. It wasn’t impossible. Horizon had gotten so used to death that now it frightened her. It was always in the other side of the screen. But now it was here and she was panicking inside. Pathetic. What was she, eight?

Kalisse’s words catch her slightly by surprise and Horizon falters. “You know, for once your right. I am doubting it, I’m doubting you.” Her voice breaks. “I thought— had hoped—” She breaks off, regaining composure once again and shaking her head slowly. “Yes, I suppose it won’t…”

message 82: by ama (new)

ama Kalisse is about to react to what Horizon says, to say something meaningful (or at least try), to get her forgiveness before she kills her, but then-

Suddenly there is a small, high-pitched screechy sound. One that only an extremely trained ear like Kalisse's could notice.

And then it all happens, in one short second. Kalisse leaps at Horizon and practically shoves her across the room. A millisecond after, the space where Horizon had just been standing before she was shoved explodes loudly.
Kalisse doesn't have time to fully shove herself out of the way, and her leg is caught in the explosion. She falls to the ground, slightly hitting her head on the polished floor, as the smell of burnt flesh rises from her leg.

Horizon hits the wall with a stunning crack and at once, a bright flash lights the room with a dull explosion. Dazed and disoriented, she jumps to her feet, shoulder throbbing and head swimming. Thoughts race through her mind all at once, none lasting for more than an instant and none sinking in.
Horizon’s breath catches in her throat. “Damn you, Kalisse,” she murmurs softly, pain flickering across her face. Slowly, Rize drops to her knees beside her, biting her lip.
“You idiot.” Harsh words said without conviction. Anger was always easier to show than thanks. “Quit changing your mind. If you’re going to kill me, just do it already.” Already, Rize is pulling off her jacket, eyes locked on Kalisse’s.

ama Kalisse slowly gets to her feet, her hands red from floor-burn.
She winces as white-hot pain flashes in her leg but she doesn’t scream. She could never scream in front of Horizon, not with her looking so hostile. Those green eyes staring at her with hated straight from hell. Her heart aches, perhaps with more agony than her actual body does right now.
Everyone's turned on her, like usually. Everyone hates her, and better yet - the world was probably going to implode any minute now.
(Nuska.)
Kalisse swallows and it seems to unlock something within her because suddenly she's pacing (or at least trying to, more like limping around), muttering something to herself, as if she forgot Horizon existed.
Then, she turns back to Horizon and says what she's been muttering more loudly:
"Nuksa betrayed me. She didn't trust me to kill you, so she wanted to kill you herself. I- I didn't plant the bomb. She did. And she must've known that I ..." her voice falters as she stares off to the distance, her eyes filled with pure emotional pain. " ... she knew the bomb would probably get me too," she finishes, her voice barely audible.
