If you enjoy the forensics side of the mystery then Ariana Franklin's Mistress of the Art of Death series will be right up your alley. "
I like to go for some 'shopping' in the read books ;) Can't believe it's almost over.
Thanks for the recommendation Lauren! Can't wait to try that one :)

Looking forward to discussing with you too. Have you read

Lauren, yes I've read the first three books in the Lady Darby series and loved them. Very much looking forward to the fourth. If you like a little romance with your historical mysteries, you will love it.

This is my curl-up-and relax genre. Someone mentioned Kate Ross, I loved her Julian Kestrel series, only wish we still had her around writing more for us. The Irene Adler series by Carole Nelson Douglas and Laurie R. King's Mary Russell books are also favorites. Others:
C.S. Harris
Charles Todd
Lindsey Davis
John Maddox Roberts
Looking forward to some great suggestions from this group!

Hi Susan! The William Hope Hodgson collection sounds amazing, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Does it have another title?

I've read them all as well and really enjoyed them. The other author I have been enjoying is Tessa Harris.

Meghan, I found it on Amazon. It's a book not an ebook (I still like the feel of a real book in my hand). It's a Wordsworth Edition, Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural. I actually have a DVD with 1 of the stories dramatized with Donald Pleasant as Carnaki.

Thanks! I'll keep searching; the extra info will help!

Hi Monica - Two good tudor series are the Joanna Stafford series by Nancy Bilyeau and the Sir Robert Carey series by P.F. Chisholm. I just read a very light medieval mystery (The Fifth Knight which was fast paced.

Hi everybody:
I second Meghan's recommendation of Kate Ross (one of my favorite Regency authors, and I only wish she had had time to write more novels). Also, I too enjoy Charles Todd, Ashley Gardner (Captain Lacey), C.J. Sansom, Ellis Peters, and most of the authors people have already mentioned. Also, Elizabeth Peters!
I write a mystery series set in Regency England that features a Bow Street Runner, a barrister, and an unconventional lady as the three protagonists.

Hi D.G. *waves*
I've heard from a few people that they stopped reading Perry's books once they learned who she really was."
Did I miss something? What's the story behind Anne Perry?

Hi, Monica,
I agree about the Bernard Knight series. I read about 5 of them and gave up. It's the same thing every time! Would make a good tv series, though, as it's always the same characters, different senario.

Anne Perry was convicted of murder when she was a teenager. She and a friend murdered the friend's mother in 1954, when she was 15. She was imprisoned for five years. (She changed her name after release; she was born Juliet Hulme.) It's probably the most infamous crime case to come out of New Zealand.

Hi, Suzanne! Your name and series keep coming up on various lists of recommended books! What a pleasure to "meet" you! I look forward to reading your series!

I had heard that story about Anne Perry, but I have to say it never stopped me from enjoying her books. But I haven't read the most recent ones in her two series.

I was thinking the same thing!

One of my favorite writers is (sadly, was) Margaret Frazer. Has anyone else read her books? I recommend her to readers who like "religious" sleuths, so Cadfael fans.
I started to drift away from Anne Perry around the time she tried SF. I think she may have realized that she needed to refresh herself, but IMHO, it didn't work.
Anne Perry and the Murder of the Century tells her story as Juliet Hume.

oops - you're right of course :)
Shomeret wrote: "I continued to read Anne Perry after I found out about her crime, but I now read it differently. I keep on thinking about how her experiences inform her writing."
Yes. It hasn't stopped me from reading her books but it does affect that way that I read her work.

Candace Robb has 2 series: the Owen Archer mysteries are set in England and Wales in the late 14th century, and the Margaret Kerr mysteries are set in Scotland in the late 13th/early 14th centuries, at the beginning of the Wars of Independence. And after a long break, there's another Owen Archer in the works!
Alys Clare's Hawkenlye series is set in the late 1100s, in the reign of Richard the Lionheart. The action takes place mainly in England, with forays into France and, sometimes, more distant locations. At the heart of each novel is the magnificent Hawkenlye Abbey, a mixed community of nuns and monks under the rule of the formidable Abbess Helewise.
Priscilla Royal has a medieval mystery series featuring Eleanor, Prioress of Tyndal, in 11th century East Anglia.
Also, just saw this re: the new Ariana Franklin: book:http://bit.ly/1EAP8OZ
I wish it was in the Adelia Aguilar series, but it still sounds good.
Looking forward to more recommendations in this period!

I love historical Mystery fiction especially when they describe the lives of the people in that era. Some of my favorites (there are many) are: Anne Perry, Susan Elia MacNeal, Rhys Bowen (Her Royal Spyness and Molly Murphy) Charles Todd (Ian Rutledge and Bess Crawford),
Edward Marston (Train series and World War II series),
Maureen Jennings plus many more. Happy reading

Right now I am reading Bellfield Hall by Anna Dean. This is a new series for me, and I am really enjoying the protagonist,an intelligent, sharp-tongued spinster.

I wish it was in the Adelia Aguilar series, but it still sounds good.
Looks good, though I also wish it had been some type of closing to the Adelia series.
