Welcome to the group, Malorie!
I loved Nefertiti's Heart although I think it is more of a historical romance / steampunk than a historical mystery.

Kristin | 32 comments Hello, everyone,
I'm Kristin and a retired teacher and retired librarian. Historical mysteries are my favorite type of book to read. My favorite series is Maisie Dobbs but I have read other mysteries discussed here. Always looking for some new authors in this genre.

Kristin | 32 comments Thanks for the recommended folder on new authors, Lauren. I looked at the new books by authors in 2019 also. Very helpful! I don't see a new book posted to read for May? Is there one? Death of a Dishonorable Gentleman looks very good!

Oh I totally agree with you there. It was described as being in the historical mystery genre but that's not very accurate. It has a little mystery, a little romance, a smidge historical, and a lot of steampunk.

The featured author for May is Rhys Bowen. Quite a few members are continuing with her Royal Spyness series. I will update the group's currently reading book now.

Michaela | 69 comments Hiya! I´m Michaela from Vienna/Austria, just joined the group. Recently re-discovered mystery, and as I like historical fiction, it has to be historical mystery of course. Will try to start the Royal Spyness series, and also got the Cadfael mysteries on my list. Besides love British Classics, esp. Victorians, so one of my favourite books is Gaskell´s North and South. Always too many books on my list and too little time to read - but I guess you know that all! ;) Happy to join you and find out about more new reads! :)

RachelG. | 467 comments I am enjoying the Wheel of Mystery challenge so much I figured I better say "Hi" and introduce myself. I just joined the group in January because my goal this year is to read more historical mysteries. I love cozy mysteries but have not read very many historical books in the past. The challenge you have so wonderfully set up this year is really helping me get to know some new books. Thank You!

message 414: by JenniferFour (new)

JenniferFour | 17 comments Jennifer here. Over the last few years I have read several books by Mary Elizabeth Braddon and Anna Katharine Green. I think they are very good...I like the pace ay which the mystery unfolds.

I am an audiobook narrator but most of more work is more modern and leans towards sci-fi (which I also enjoy).

Michaela | 69 comments Welcome Jennifer! What have you narrated?

message 417: by JenniferFour (new)

JenniferFour | 17 comments Thank you for the welcome. On Audible, in the mystery category I have a cozy mystery series (Polly Parrett, Pet-Sitter) and a supernatural mystery (Midnight Burning). More in line with this group, any day I expect a pair of short stories by Anna Katharine Green to be on Audible (I am 1/2 of that narration team) and I am currently working on Behind Closed Doors by Anna Katharine Green.

Mally Becker | 5 comments Hi, I'm new here, but so glad to have found you all. Historical mysteries are my favorite reads. I especially love C.J. Sansom's Matthew Shardlake books, and I can't get enough of Susan Elia MacNeal's Maggie Hope or Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs. Can't wait to pick up some new book recommendations.

Love the P.F. Chisholm ones, except when she leaves the book on too much of a cliff hanger! But the characters are terrific.

Helen (helenfrominyocounty) | 235 comments Hi, everybody. Just found this group. British historical mysteries of any era are what I read and review. Just finished The Cabinets of Barnaby Mayne, Elsa Hart's latest, which I have to hurry up and type for NetGalley, since it's due today.

I live in California and just retired this year, was going to do a bit of traveling, but... you know. Hopefully next year. Looking forward to discussions.

Hi, Sandy, and thanks for the welcome. Believe that Elsa is done with her China series, unfortunately. The new series is a hard slog. Couldn't get into the characters and there's more levels of detail on the contents of the cabinets then I found necessary for the story. My review will reflect this.

message 431: by Pam (new)

Pam Tedder | 7 comments Hello everyone, I am an avid reader and will give most genres a go. I have found SciFi the most difficult to get into and I don't really enjoy horror. My favourite reading comes from the Golden Age of Detective stories. I have always read them and thoroughly enjoy them. Margery Allingham, Dorothy L Sayers, not so much Agatha Christie, Although any historical fiction is also to be enjoyed. I started with Nora Lofts and Jean Plaidy/Katherine Kellow and now enjoy CJ Sansom, Phillipa Gregory, and Edward Marston to name but a few. I recently discoverd Martin Edwards has written some typical golden age stories. I preferred Gallows Court to Mortmain Hall, but both were really well done. I look forward to discussing stories with you all.

message 432: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic | 597 comments Welcome, Pam! You've listed some authors that I've been meaning to read. Have you read Sharon Kay Penman? One of my favorite author's. She's mostly know for Medieval historical fiction set during the reign of the Plantagenets although she did write a mystery series The Queen's Man #1 Justin de Quincy. Happy reading!

I've just started (late) our December read, My Lady Judge, set in medieval Ireland. Its too early for much of an opinion. I'm also reading the Cadfael series by Ellis Peters and really enjoy Cadfael's quiet calm.

message 446: by Helen (new)

Helen (helenfrominyocounty) | 235 comments Iasa, welcome! Historical mysteries are all that I read. I'm currently in a medieval mood myself, reading the Paul Doherty Hugh Corbett and Brother Athelstan series. Both are excellent.

Katy | 224 comments Hello Everyone. I just joined the group today. Historical mysteries are my favorite genre. I have one of the Kurland St. Mary mysteries, Death Comes To Kurland Hall, on my bookshelf waiting to be read, so I'm glad Catherine Lloyd is the featured author for March.

message 450: by Christie (new)

Christie Stratos (christiestratos) | 1 comments Hi everyone! I just joined a few days ago. I'm a historical suspense author writing in the Victorian era, and I love reading well-paced historical novels from most time periods. I'm looking to read more historical, as I realized I've been reading a lot more contemporary than historical recently. I think I'll pick up with March's read. I'm excited to dig into something historical again!
