Please do not post links to your blog reviews in this thread; you can post those in the thread you create for your blog in the self-promotion folder.

What a fun group! I haven't been part of a Goodreads group for too long and am looking forward to checking out many of the books suggested here.

I'm J.P., and live in northwestern Vermont with my darling hubby, cute son and four naughty chickens who are forever escaping their pen. I love reading suspense/mystery--some historical and some psychological.

Gothic suspense is probably my favorite (like the original "Dracula" and Daphne DuMaurier's "My Cousin Rachel,") as well as suspense like "Yellow Room," by Mary Roberts Rinehart. I'm always looking for creepy, atmospheric tales and would love your suggestions as to what I should add to my TBR pile next. :)

Hi Cheryl, nice to meet a fellow "newbie" here! I hear ya on the TBR pile--I went through a serious delcuttering/minimalism phase a few years ago and gave away about 75% of my books...but am now filling a particular shelf with TBR novels. And I feel OK about that (as long as it stays within that space). But my online/notebook/mental TBR pile is huge!

I just joined this group yesterday. After telling my daughter about Goodreads I thought maybe I should be getting more use out of the app, myself.

I tend to browse the historical mysteries section on my Freading app and discover new-to-me authors that way. Lately I have been reading and loving the Crispin Guest series by Jeri Westerson.

As I checked out the discussions in this group, I realized there are a lot more great books out there. Thank goodness! Happy to be here.

Hello everyone
I'm Queen Pooh Bear. I'm a historian and 19th century fanatic. I've been reading historical fiction my whole life but am a relative newcomer to historical mysteries. A kind librarian introduced me to Lady Julia- or more precisely Nicholas Brisbane (:swoon:) The Lady Julia Grey Bundle. I absolutely love female sleuths like Lady Julia, Amelia Peabody and even Jane Austen. I'll read up through WWII but lose interest after that. I'm not really a fan of crime novels or gaslight types. I like my mysteries light and fun, preferably with some romance or hint of romance. I added a lot of books to the bookshelf. I read some modern cozy mysteries as well but only when I run out of or don't have time for historical fiction.

I also read historical mysteries aimed at middle grade readers (ages 9-12) and teens. If anyone wants recommendations for those I especially love
Kat, Incorrigible (ages 10+) a Regency fantasy hybrid with a fun, spunky young heroine.

A Spy in the House (The Agency series) is a great series aimed at teens and adults. The books are speculative fiction -something that could have possibly existed or happened usually female-driven. I really like Mary and her story. The history is fascinating.

Now school is over (I'm a museum educator/tour guide) I have more time to read. I hope to get through one or two more Amelia Peabody mysteries before my schedule gets busy again. It's nice to meet some fellow historical mystery lovers.

Great series but I never tried V Speedwell.

The librarian recited that opening line from Silent in the Grave and I was hooked! It sounded funny. It took me awhile to get used to the gritter version of Victorian England than what I was used to but Brisbane made it so worth it.

I'm excited to find this group. I love reading historical mysteries, especially those which immerse me in a time and place far away. Lots of detail and historical accuracy are important, as well as an intriguing plot. It's the closest thing I've found to a time machine! My favorite era is the Victorian, but I also like ancient Rome, medieval, Tudor-era, and the early-to mid-20th century for settings. Favorite authors are Robert McCammon (Matthew Corbett series), CJ Sansom, Dan Simmons, Sarah Waters, Caleb Carr, Steven Saylor, Emma Donaghue. I'm always looking for new authors to discover.

My favorite genres are mystery and historical so historical mysteries are like heaven. I'm currently reading "The Mystery at Belle Magnolia" by Madison Kent. I just recently discovered steampunk mystery when reading my new favorite series by A.W. Exley. The first book in the series "Nefertiti's Heart" is one of my favorites now, it is AMAZING and I don't ever usually say that about a book.
