Annerlee | 2871 comments I just finished Blue Sun, Yellow Sky. It was an easy read, but there was a lot to think about. I'd better pause the reading and get some work done now : )

Annerlee | 2871 comments Before I go - Esther, can you add Dark Echoes of the Past to the spreadsheet please? I'll start reading it this evening.

If I'm not mistaken, there's no limit on repetition"

That's right. There's no limit. One original idea was to choose just one word and have it apply to ALL the titles...

I have no idea. It was a 2 stars for me as well.

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments This chain is getting really girly. :)

Update:
total points: 255
Book Read: 26
Book in progress: 10
longest chain*: 23

* Chain = book currently being read and book finished

message 206: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I'm curious about how the points are being calculated. I understand that the first 4 books are 5 pts, then books 5-8 are 10, remaining books are all 15.

The spreadsheet shows we have 1 chain, but 11 of the read books are scored at 5 points. I imagine everything will be adjusted once the toppler is over.

Pay attention to the Chain # column. We currently have more than 1 chain. There are "to read" books in the lot. I decided to ignore any books that are not reported as being start as far a point goes.

These chains will connect when the books are started. Points will jump up, :)

message 208: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments Yeah, that chain number column confused me as well, but I understand your reasoning now that you've clarified it. Thanks. :) It's too early in the morning for me and I haven't had coffee yet.

My mind does work in a weird way. :)
My thinking was that I would rather see points go up suddenly than down if, at the end some, books where not finished.

message 210: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments It makes sense, Esther. You've done a great job on the spreadsheet. I have to get my son to help me with those complex formulas. :)

In a roundabout way, you are my teacher. Between these topplers and the yearly challenge, I make myself learn. I build on my challenge sheet every year. It is ridiculously more complex than required now.

i never read less than 1.5 and can go as high as 2x (not often) but depends on the book

message 214: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments Impressive Marie. I've upped the speed to 1.55👍 I should finish the book tomorrow. Now I come to think about it, I think you were the one who started me on the whole speedier reading thing, in a previous team toppler...

The narrator has a slow southern drawl so the speed is reasonably fast but still comfortable. If I went any faster, I'd be so hyper, I wouldn't sleep!

Neither book fits well into the chains at the moment because we're not allowed to match part words ☹️

But if your choice is between one book or the other, I'd go with the title with most words. There's a better chance we can link a word if there are more of them 😜 Unless someone has a specific joining book in mind ?

In order to add at the top or bottom we need one of these: Not Dying With You Tonight Read News World

So we would need to link: Girls Paper or Fire with one of these.

Marie, let me know and I will start a new chain and hope that we will link it.

Ayacchi | 1722 comments I think I can read The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl and The Peculiar Night of the Blue Heart, so we'll have:

The Magnetic Girl
The Night is Short, Walk on Girl
The Night Tiger
The Peculiar Night of the Blue Heart
The Girl in Blue Coat

How?

Ayacchi if you can read The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl and Marie wants to read Night Tiger, I can read Blue Night. This completes the link back to 'blue' in the chain.

Is everyone happy with that?
Ayacchi, you can still read The Peculiar Night of the Blue Heart if you have time, it would just mean a double link back.

I hardly ever listened to audio before joining challenges. I fnd they take so much longer than it would to read but sometimes it is the only format i can get without paying ( i do scribd and KU and use my library to excess both online and in person)

I agree they takes me much longer but I listen to them when I would not be able to read. In the car, while doing yardwork (summer), doing house chores, walking around town. Sometimes while working as I have some chores that do not require to much brain power. So it even out.
Sometimes I can get both the audio and ebook of a book from the library. I like not splitting my time between 2 books.

message 239: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments It's changed for me. I now read audiobooks faster than print books. For one, I listen at 1.5x speed or faster depending on the narrator and I spend more time reading them. Print books are reserved for when I crawl into bed and tend to fall asleep.

I finished my Kindle book that I had on the go and I'm not sure I'll be able to finish another one by the end of the toppler. I'll look see what is the tail end of the chain and see if I can fit a quick one in.

message 240: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Feb 17, 2021 07:37AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments Got it figured. I will start Dark Resurrection today. It can go in the middle of the chain of "dark" links, and if I don't finish it, no harm done. It's 264 pages so should be a quick read. I hope.

I cannot audio-read "faster". My ears hates it. I envy you. I have a book with the slowest narrator ever a few weeks ago. I tried again. It really does not work for me.

Annerlee | 2871 comments I have an hour to go for A Gift of Time. This has turned out to be an excellent time travel book. And the final chapters are (fittingly enough) an exciting race against time. I should finish it tomorrow.
I'll definitely finish Blue Night by the end of the toppler. It's pretty short.

message 245: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments @Esther, can you remove Dark Echoes of the Past from the list please? It won't affect the chain. I'm going to look for something easier (and shorter) to read instead. I haven't got that far with it and I can tell it's a book I don't want to rush.
My last book will be something to sandwich in-between, in case I don't finish in time.

Roz | 4529 comments I finished reading News of the World.

I was looking for a short, quick read and came up with Tea Time for the Traditionally Built (time). It's a little further along in the series, but that's okay. And it's short (only 212 pages) so I should be able to finish it in time.

Old Man's War and Little Girl Lost
