One Chain to Link them All

Always 😉
Margo wrote: "I'll be able to read 2, positively 3. I will be sitting around more than usual due to a twisted ankle. Only in toppler week is that a good thing 😄"LOL Margo! You found the good in the big bad!!!
I penciled you in for Lost in a Good Book, Two links between 2 books!! Yoot!!
Ayacchi wrote: "I'm still confused with the rule. Will we merge chain 1, 2, etc or will they go alone?"The rule says we can start as many chains as we want.
But the longer the better. We started 2 chains to give us some options but I think we will merge them.
Roz wrote: "It's the merging part I'm not sure about."Right now, Chain 1 ends with Dark & Deadly Things. Chain 2 starts with Kade's Dark Embrace. We could merge those 2 chains together because of the word "Dark".
Things will likely change throughout the week as we find ways to make the longest chain possible.
I have Before the Coffee Gets Cold and The Sea of Adventure for On a Cold Dark Sea. But maybe the first one is easier to go with the next word?
Roz wrote: "I think Margo is reading The Red Ribbon,"thanks. I have no idea why but I keep mixing your names. It is not the first time I do this. I usually catch it, Paranoia and all.
Esther, maybe we could swap lines 11 and 12 in thread 1, and add Vernon God Little as line 13? If I prioritise that over The Red Ribbon that's an extra 5 points.Plus lots of books have "little" in title.
I have on-hand 4 books for “lost,”, “book” or “God” , but have found another 4-5 I could buy to cover the same terms or “butterfly.” As I looked at the spreadsheet, I’m reluctant to add a row or novel and potentially mess it up, since Excel- impaired. So my questions...
Do we need to commit up-front to which books we’ll read, or can we sub in other books if we’re stuck with something we’d like to dnf, with the same key word?
Are we developing critical mass around certain terms where reading books with those terms increases the likelihood of putting together one or two longer, higher-point generating chains?
I’m usually good for two books, three is possible but depends on how fast the first one goes.
I’ve got these:
A Lesson Before Dying
The Book of Forgotten Authors
Arrow of God
The Hours Before Dawn
Could buy these especially if lost, small, or butterfly matter particularly.
A Field Guide to Getting Lost
The God of Small Things
The Butterfly House
What’s best for our team ?
Carol,Because everything is chained I think it is better to go for what you are sure to read and add more as the week progresses if you have time. This is what I do. I committed to one book and one audio. And i will add more, if i can during the week.
When I add book in the chain I update the list of possible words that will link to the current chains we are trying for the longest.
If you get a book you do not want to finish, we will deal with it. I expect I will change the order of the chain so much that I will be dizzy and slightly mad a the end of the week.
So if you give me a choice, I would pencil you in for one of these "before" books.

done and I removed the red ribbon.
Great, I'll probably get to Red Ribbon as my books are all short but don't want to over commit. That's tempting fate ;-)
Margo wrote: "Great, I'll probably get to Red Ribbon as my books are all short but don't want to over commit. That's tempting fate ;-)"yeah. You never know. Your ankle could magically heal and you will be too busy dancing. :)
I just came across a very short book with a very long title:Bad Little Girls Die Horrible Deaths and Other Tales of Dark Fantasy
(Could be a useful addition - lol - it all depends on how 'dark' the fantasy and how 'horrible' the deaths are... hmmmmmm )
But think of all the linking possibilities! Sorry Esther. That would put your head in a spin!
Annerlee wrote: "I just came across a very short book with a very long title:Bad Little Girls Die Horrible Deaths and Other Tales of Dark Fantasy

It may be too short. We have to have at least 175 pages. There is no paperback or hardcover edition, so ebooks must be over 200 pages.
Esther wrote: "Carol,Because everything is chained I think it is better to go for what you are sure to read and add more as the week progresses if you have time. This is what I do. I committed to one book and on..."
Cool. Then first is A Lesson Before Dying, and second is The Hours Before Dawn.
Janice wrote: "I'd be willing to start the toppler with The Book of Lost Things for one chain, using "lost" as the link. I'd also be willing to start Kade's Dark Embrace for another chain using "Dark" as the link..."does it have to be lost or dark could i not use book for a link to this
I could continue the chain you have on the SS withThe Little Lies which i can get on KU
I can only view SS not edit is this how it is meant to be
and the second chain with The Girl in Red
i would get through both and maybe another in the week
Super! Glad you found us Marie. You can build on any of the words that Esther identified in msg 2. I think this toppler is fluid enough that we'll be able to arrange the chains to accommodate the books we want to read.
Marie (UK) wrote: "I could continue the chain you have on the SS withThe Little Lies which i can get on KU

That's great Marie, GIRL is very common as part of a title, plus [book:The Girl in Red|42881101] is a good read ;-)
I also have Girl in the Blue Coat which would give blue or girl again - I will certainly get through 3 books maybe more depends on what other things crop up at home although as we are still in lockdown that is not much
I'll be able to read 1 book for the toppler. I'll choose one of the belowSugar and Spice and All Those Lies
Truth, Lies, and Second Dates
Touch of Red

Could you tell me which one? As this has an impact on the chain and so thus, for all our next selection. it would be great.
BTW, A touch of Red would be a great choice for the chain..
ok.. I am done playing around with the spreadsheet. If google cooperated you should have limited access to edit. It does not mean you have to as I will keep it updated at least twice a day during the toppler. And it is probably easier if only one person manage it but, if you want to see the points go up as soon as you finish, you can do it. :)you should be able to:
-add book in the book tab
- modify their status in the book tab
- change the order of titles in the chain tab, (be careful if you do so, i did not put a warning for duplicate.)
Everything else should be locked as it does it all automatically.
F9r my part I think I'll leave it to you Esther, I'd probaby accidentally delete it and get kicked off the team ;-D
Margo wrote: "F9r my part I think I'll leave it to you Esther, I'd probaby accidentally delete it and get kicked off the team ;-D"LOL
I would not be happy that is for sure.
I think it should be in one person's (you, Esther) hands. The potential to mess things up/confuse/delete inadvertently increases when too many people having access.
I have a coupe of "girl" books that aren't long. I hope I can get to one of them. The Girl at the Border
Girl in Hyacinth Blue
That last one would go along with Marie's Girl in the Blue Coat.

that would work for me
I'm ready and raring to get started. I think I'll leave the editting to you, Esther. I wouldn't want to mess with perfection. That might give you a bit of extra work to do, but it might be easier than fixing a mess.
I agree that one person managing the sheet if better. I just did not want anyone to be frustrated. And I trust you all.And it is no work really. all I have to do is add books and change status. ...until the end of the week where I will play "musical chair" with the titles.
I thought I missed the toppler, lol. I'll stay away from the spreadsheet, not good with columns.I found this book The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, not so long so I think I can manage. Maybe we can connect 'little' and 'girl'?
ok. I am not sure if I need to add other books. I am not sure if you are gophering and saying maybe or if you want me to add books you are sure you will read. So I did not add anything. I would rather err on the side of caution. I will be happy to add books, just make it clear. :)
I am training for the toppler. I am doing things around carrying my phone around so I can get my audiobook done before tomorrow.
If we can make chain 1 into a circular chain, we would have more options to link to either end of chain 2. (We can break Chain 1 anywhere to make it fit).I'm adding a slightly longer title to the start of chain 1 to make it easier. Someone would need to read a book linking Low Men In Yellow Coats to 'The little Lies'.
I'll maybe get around to it, but maybe someone else has a book they can read too?
Esther wrote: "I'm in training for the Haha! I Like the concept Esther!
( Edited to correct my tippler typo... Oops)
If someone really wanted to link both chains, reading The Little Red Chairs would do it. It's short (under 300 pages). But it would depend on everything else being read before it.

I can add 2 more onto the LOST chain:
Lost in a Good Book 10 hours
Good Me, Bad Me 10 hours
The Good Girl 11 hours
The Magnetic Girl 9 hours
I couldn't guarantee the last one til middle of week.
I've just seen the spreadsheet, great work Esther.
