Very fine debut novel about an unusual Hollywood police detective pursuing a torture killer and also a serial dog poisoner. 4 stars, I liked it very much and I hope Schneider goes on to a long successful career.

I got a kick out of February's Doctors, Detectives, Common Sense, about the "traditionally-built" Mma Ramotswe, the founder of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency in Botswana, and her annual medical check-up.

Araych | 676 comments The Thursday Murder Club The Thursday Murder Club (Thursday Murder Club, #1) by Richard Osman by Richard Osman

A small group of older folks who live in a retirement home in England get together weekly to review cold cases, thus the name. But then a real murder occurs and they can't resist getting involved. This is supposedly Osman's first book but it's so good that's hard to believe. This is an absolutely wonderful mystery with a dynamic plot and lovable characters. Highest recommendation, 5 stars.

This morning I finished reading Lament for a Maker by Michael Innes. Fun book with a creepy mystery set in a Scottish castle that for me makes it a bit atypical of golden-age mystery novels.

I'm about to finish The Abductor by Dolores Hitchens (1962). It's the first half of a two-book volume to be released by Stark House Press in March -- I haven't added the book itself to the GR library, but I will later today. It's really good and keeping me on the edge of my seat.

I realized why that title sounded familiar -- it's part of the Penzler American Mystery Classics series. I've picked up every book so far, but they get shelved right away so I'd forgotten I had this one.
