I'll be reading that as soon as it hits the mailbox. I've had that book preordered since before it had a cover.

I gave in and started reading Ellroy's Clandestine late last night. I was already agitated (the usual feeling I get with his books) by chapter 4.

In the future, a diabolically destructive alien species called the Architects are threatening to wipe out intelligent life in the universe. A salvage vessel and its crew (of humans and aliens) gets caught up in the fight against these beings.
Good space saga. 4 stars

i always enjoy thrillers that involve psychologist and therapy sessions

Here is my 4 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I've finished The Fortune Men by Nadifa Mohamed, which is a fictionalized look at a case from 1952 in Cardiff (Tiger Bay) Wales, in which an innocent man by the name of Mahmoud Mattan was executed in what would be the last hanging ever in Cardiff.

One would think that the subject matter being what it is that I'd be bubbling over with enthusiasm for this novel, but for some reason I can't put my finger on, I'm just not. Oh well. Can't love them all.

I know everyone loves this series, but I read the first one and decided that was enough for me.

still working on Clandestine. I do believe this marks the first appearance ever of everyone's favorite LAPD cop, Dudley Smith.

Long Beach Homicide/Danny Beckett #4. Danny is investigating a murder when he is targeted by someone with deadly intentions. I like this series but Danny's physical and emotional issues are getting old. I think I'm done with the series.

Next in line is the 4th Vera mystery, Silent Voices by Ann Cleeves
Finished Clandestine by James Ellroy. As with Brown's Requiem, reading his My Dark Places was highly beneficial and insightful to reading his fiction. Not quite at the level of the LA Quartet, but I can see the seeds taking root here.
I truly have become an Ellroy addict.

This is the sequel to The Henna Artist and revisits the characters from that novel. Lakshmi is now married and running a Herbal Garden, and her apprentice Malik is now learning the construction business. However there's trouble on the horizon.
Good story. 3.5 stars

Nancy, I haven't read a lot by him, but if you haven't read it, in Hollywood Nocturnes, "Dick Contino's Blues" shows a side to his writing I'm not sure he unleashes all that often, humor. Gritty, crude, rude, lewd humor. I thought it was terrific.

Oh, thanks! I just checked and I don't have that one. I also just bought the newest Ellroy novel, Widespread Panic. I truly am an addict; his books are my crack.

brain break: currently reading The Corpse in the Waxworks by John Dickson Carr, which is actually sort of cool, at least as far as I've read. It starts out in a sort of spooky wax museum before moving on to a private club where people go to have sex while wearing masks. Given that it was written in 1932 ...
A Palm for Mrs Pollifax I have read one after the other of these books so far i don't have the whole collection yet as there is quite a few but i love them great storylines and characters. Also fun elements in each book.

Mary Russell #2. A huge disappointment. I really liked the first volume is this series but this story doesn't start until half way through the book. The first half is full of theology, religion, etc. etc. Boring -- I started skipping pages. The second half mystery is OK except that I had it all pretty much figured out and the ending is just ridiculous. I liked the first volume enough that I'll take a look at #3 but unless it improves significantly I'm done. This book not recommended.

I especially liked his The Black Spectacles apa The Problem of the Green Capsule. The howdunit was so well done in that one that I think I gasped out loud once I got there.

I especially liked his The Black Spectacles apa The Problem of the Green Capsule (a.k.a. The Three Coffins) and The Burning Court. The former is enjoyable and justly famous for a chapter in which Carr details multiple paths for locked-room murder story.
But the latter was my favorite, and something of a revelation as Carr very neatly balanced a mystery with the implications of a supernatural story. This is one I wish someone would reissue because I think a lot of readers would appreciate it more now than the mystery readers of the time seemed to.

Actually, Randy, The Three Coffins was an alternate title of The Hollow Man rather than The Black Spectacles/Problem of the Green Capsule.
I agree with the need for reissues not just for The Burning Court but for all of his novels. I have every single book Carr ever wrote (collected over years and years), and except for the slow trickle of newer editions (which I'm picking up as they come out), they're all mass market paperbacks; some of those are difficult to find at a decent price nowadays.
Haven't read The Burning Court yet, but have heard great things.

Speaking of John Dickson Carr, I finished The Corpse in the Waxworks: A Paris Mystery late last night. I would have started with book one of the Bencolin series (It Walks by Night), but CITW is on the Borges/Bioy Septimo Circulo list of crime novels I'm reading this year. I will backtrack though for sure.

One more Septimo book for now, Puzzle for Players by Patrick Quentin, an author I've never read.

During the Christmas season, the detective team of Bernie Little and his dog Chet look for a missing person.
These stories, narrated by Chet the dog, are always good for a laugh. 3.5 stars

Hmmmm... I had that right to begin with, but somewhere the formatting oopsed and I missed it. (Or I oopsed and I missed it.) Thanks, Nancy.
Meant to post: A few years ago I found an omnibus of The Hollow Man (etc., etc,...) and The Burning Court. Enjoyed both but especially the latter. I read others by Carr years ago and found them clever and entertaining, but darned if I can remember which ones.

Yes, a fun little series at a variety of exotic locales.

I wanted to get this one, particularly since its available in a British Library Crime Classic edition. I am looking forward to reading The Plague Court Murders: A Sir Henry Merrivale Mystery in October, which was recently reissued by Otto Penzler.

It's already available at Book Depository; it is available in the US in November. I bought The Plague Court (the Penzler edition) but still have yet to read it. It might be fun to do an ongoing John Dickson Carr readalong.

Working on Puzzle for Players by Patrick Quentin; a bit ho-hum so far but I'm only like 29% through it so hopefully it will pick up. Next on the mystery read list is Mrs. March by Virginia Feito; I tend to be a bit wary when I read blurbs like "Madame Bovary meets Patricia Highsmith" so we'll see.
I've finished Karen Jennings' An Island and was completely blown away with how good it is. Another that won't be everyone's cup of tea, but for me, excellent.
