CLEAR THE SHELVES CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1, 2021 - December 31, 2021

Here are some ideas on how to choose your books:
1. Read a book that you borrowed from a friend and want to return when finished.
2. Read a book that you have had for two+ years and haven't started.
3. Read a book you have started, set aside for a while, and now want to finish.
4. Read a book that you own that will help towards a yearly challenge.
5. Read a book from your shelf then donate it to your local Little Free Library, church, shelters, Goodwill, etc.

Just cleared my first book - The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. I have been avoiding this book since it came out, as I represent kids in the system who are sent to kid prison. Almost every detail was accurate, from the terrible food, to the egg-water, to the physical abuse. The thing is, this is historical fiction but this crap is still happening today. These facilities were not shut down after the atrocities at Dozier were finally unearthed and the truth couldn’t be shutout anymore. They now are operated by for-profit companies. Most of the stories this book contains could have been told by children who came out of the facilities last year. We have to stop treating people as disposable. We have to recognize systemic racism and root it out. “I know there’s nothing in here that changes people. In here or out there are the same, but in here no one has to act fake anymore.” “That’s what the school did to a boy. It didn’t stop when you got out. Bend you all kind of ways until you were unfit for straight life, good and twisted by the time you left.” I appreciate everything the author does in this book. Maybe, one day, this will truly be historical fiction in Florida. Definitely worth reading! 5 stars

Just cleared another book - Happy People Read and Drink Coffee by Agnes Martin-Lugand, translated by Sandra Smith. Well, this book has a misleading title! Not what I expected at all. Not sure if it was the writing or translation, but the emotions of the characters jumped around so much, it was hard to be sympathetic for them. The plot itself was interesting. Worth reading with the above caveats. 3.5 stars

Karen Siddall (boysmom) | 295 comments I want to Clear My Shelves completely but I'll settle for a start. I initially indicated that I wanted to deliver from my TBR pile at least 12 books this year or one a month but I'm doing better than that so I'm raising my goal to 30. I've also refined my audiobook-collection-clearing to format to encourage getting to some of the older hold-outs.
