The Medusa and the Snail: More Notes of a Biology Watcher by Lewis Thomas

An interesting book that uses science as a springboard to discuss more philosophical topics. Written in the mid 1970s, this book still provides insights on some scientific topics that may not be general knowledge. Thomas then branches into a discussion of several tangentially related subjects including linguistics, the scientific method, and history. While this sometimes seems like an arbitrary mash up of ideas, it generally works quite well. Worth a read - well written with some unusual insights

The Story of a Goat by Perumal Murugan

A book originally published in Tamil, this is actually a novel told from the point of view of a small black goat and her owners. The goat is a gift from a mysterious stranger and becomes the center of an elderly couple’s life. Using this device Murugan describes the life and challenges of a small rural Indian village and the effect of any disruption on the ability to make a living. While it seems odd, this book is also partly a love story betwwen two goats and a story of loss and emotional challenges. It is a charming story and well written.

Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith

I'm already ready for the next installment of this series!!
Galbraith (Rowling) is sooo good at creating relatable, well-rounded, fallible characters--and not just the main characters. Every person you encounter in these books is astoundingly whole--the only other time I've encountered this in a mystery series is Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache collection--and that wholeness extends to the plot as well. It's never just a simple plot-driven whodunit, but a story filled with personal lives and complications and people who have nothing to do with "the case" weaving in and out of the tale. While it clocked in at 944 pages (or 31 hours and 52 minutes if you're listening, as I did--the reader is FANTASTIC), I was still saddened that it was "over already?!" It could have gone on for several more hours and I would have been pleased as punch.

HHhH by Laurent Binet

description

When you look at this (granted, it's small and not terribly detailed), you immediately recognize it: it's the Mona Lisa, of course. But if you could see it more closely, you'd realize it's a Mona Lisa composed of Lego rather than paint. A Mona Lisa that could be taken apart, brick by brick, until it was a pile of plastic rather than a recreation of a masterpiece.

This book reminded me of the person I imagine putting the Lego Mona Lisa together: examining each brick and analyzing how it will fit into the bigger picture, placing each one with care and sometimes deciding that two have been transposed and needing to switch it up, all the while having a conversation with anyone who happens to enter the room.
While the author is ostensibly telling us about Operation Anthropoid (the Lego Mona Lisa he is attempting to create) each chapter is a close look at each individual Lego: the stories that create the final story, the stories of men and women who sacrificed everything to see the fall of an evil empire, the acts of bravery that ended as we--and they--knew they must: with their deaths, the politicking occurring in the Reich, the simple and the grand, the secret and the flamboyant, the journey of the author from the present into the past and the constant reminder that the present reflects on and distorts the past in very practical ways....every brick has its place and every brick must be present for the final picture to come clear.

It was a strange ride of a book, which I enjoyed immensely.

Shadow Reaper by Christine Feehan

Okay, the couple dynamic power issues in this one were much more of a push and pull than in the first of the series, but they were definitely there, in both the deeper "thriller" plot points and the main reason the protagonists met - he was looking for a rope model for Japanese rope bondage. And the weird extracted promise whne she was tured and how he happened to call it in when she was dramatically feeling better just that day, ugh. Mostly there was both more politics of their hidden world going on and more steamy scenes. Still fun in the action movie sort of way with lots of darkness and violence that plays out with a James Bond movie sort of feel. Yet so much angst in all the backstories, when I pause the action to reflect, that is apparently somehow made all better by this dramatic romantic relationship.

Elsewhere by Dean Koontz

Review
My first ever Koontz' and it did not disappoint!

But yes, I am familiar with this author's name but horror isn't a genre I read a lot of, tbh. However, this parallel world trope is something that I'm fascinated with so I really had no choice but to dive in.

The father-daughter relationship in this novel is truly the highlight for me. And that little bit of romance of looking for the missing wife/mother didn't hurt at all; it's so not at all a romantic novel but it's subtly there (or maybe I just chose to read it as such ;p). The parallel worlds are quite fascinating but I find that I wanted more... it just wasn't enough travels to other worlds and each travel so short that we barely got a glimpse of each.

At the end, I felt that this novel has a similar vibe to Stephen King's 11/22/63, which I loved, but just a shorter briefer sort of version with better ending ;) Maybe 'better' isn't the correct description but I don't want to spoil you for either books. I am now keen to explore more of Koontz works.

Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2020 by Lonely Planet

(Oh, the irony.) I noticed this book when I was shelving books at the library and thought it looked like a nice book to dream with. It is.

I gather that Lonely Planet publishes a book like this every year, but this was the first one I’ve seen. It’s like a travel look book. There are beautiful photographs and short informational segments on each country, city, region, or value trip that the Lonely Planet staff have compiled. They also include information to enable you to make more informed choices.

Because of the format I used this book as my ‘light read before sleeping’ book. It is perfect for that. I did come away with some new ideas for trips on my list (as if I needed that), and perhaps more importantly definite ideas about where I don’t want to go. This is a very nice book for armchair travelers, and a useful one for travelers who are considering expanding their list. 3.5* (My last book for 2020.)

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson

"Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day" is a humorous 1938 novel about second chances. Guinevere Pettigrew is a destitute governess in her 40s who was sent by her employment agency to interview for a job. The agency had mixed up their clients, and they sent her to Delysia LaFosse who was in need of a maid. When Miss Pettigrew arrives, Delysia is frantic because she has to get rid of one lover before another arrives. Miss Pettigrew, who usually is very straitlaced, tells one little lie after another, getting Delysia out of tough situations. By the end of the day, Miss Pettigrew learns how to have fun, and she acts as a good influence on Delysia.

Many British men were killed during World War I so there were extra women in that generation. The women ended up working as servants and governesses when they often would have loved to be married with a family. Miss Pettigrew was in that situation and did not enjoy her work.

The story is fun and frothy with the dialogue reminding me of a 1930s black and white romantic comedy film. Unfortunately, there were several anti-Semitic remarks in the dialogue. Overall, the book is pure escapism for when you want a dose of humor. Persephone re-released the book, and a film was made in 2008.

A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry

Review:
It's been 10 years since I last read this and had very little recollection of the story. This play should never be redone with colour blind casting but my god what a treat it would be to explore these relationships as an actor. Arguably, many roles that people decry are reserved for one group or another do not need to be performed as such, but in this case, this story should be performed only by those who have lived the "Black experience".

The relationships are made clear from the outset of the play and the family dynamics bring both a chuckle and a sigh. Every family is messed up in their own special way. As a reader, you are in that apartment with them from scene 1. My sole critique; the characters of Beneatha's beaus felt like contrived caricatures. It is clear that they are meant to show the large dichotomy between young people at the time but Asagai in particular reads too elevated for the other characters of the play.

Hansberry was the first black female playwright to have a play on Broadway and died at the age of 34. A great loss to theatre.

I decided to start at the beginning with the first appearance of Sherlock and Watson. The story begins quite slowly with Watson and Sherlock moving into shared accommodations, it picks up with the arrival of a summons for Sherlock to a murder scene and he invites Watson to tag along. From there we don’t actually get much detective work from Sherlock, instead we hear about the work that the two rival scotland yard detectives, Lestrade and Gregson, are conducting while Sherlock essentially makes fun of them. Strangely in the middle of the book we get a story that takes place in Utah and ultimately reveals the motive and the murderer. Then the story ends with Sherlock’s great reveal of his chain of deduction and the apprehension of the suspect who confesses. The interlude in the middle of the story, while well written and interesting was a bit jarring and unexpected, but overall I enjoyed this quick read and look forward to reading more of the Sherlock Holmes stories.
