N/R

I read the trilogy back a few years ago, quite a few years. I enjoyed very much.

Now reading Station Eleven .

The first was good. I think I'll continue asap.

I have Mr. Mercedes on my bookshelf for a long time, but I haven't read yet. I think it's the right time.

Good book!

The Duncans (Seth, his dad, and 2 uncles) have intimated everybody in the local farm coummunity and aren't about to take any flak from Reacher. Moreover the Duncans are involved in illegal trafficking and are in trouble because of a late shipment. Since the Duncans already hate Reacher they tell their customers that the shipment is delayed because Reacher is sniffing around. Before long a slew of people are out to kill Reacher including a bunch of former football players and 3 sets of hitmen - sent by the Arabs, Italians, and Iranians who are awaiting the shipment.
Reacher is very tough and his encounters with these creeps generally ends badly for the would-be assassins. Child is good at describing scenes of combat and carnage - and there's lots in the book.
While all this is going on Reacher hears about the disappearance of a local young girl 25 years ago and decides to find out what happened to her. Most of the story is about Reacher playing cat and mouse with the killers chasing him and there's a lot of violence and unpleasant behavior. However Reacher figures everything out in the end and there are some surprises and twists. Pretty good thriller, recommended for fans of the series.
Finished NYPD Red 3 by James Patterson, 5 stars, and Tail of Vengeance by Spencer Quinn, 4 stars. Starting Motive by Jonathan Kellerman and Bloodstream by Tess Gerritsen.

Elizabeth's social group consists mostly of women in a 'mother's group' However, the women and their husbands, who are recurring characters in the story, are hard to disinguish from one another.
Elizabeth's blood relatives - who are unknown to her - live in an insular community in Oregon and also seem to have unusual powers. Believing Elizabeth is in danger Aunt Catherine dispatches 19-year-old cousin Ravinia to find and warn her. Ravinia takes off with little money and makes her way to California along with a supernatural wolf who seems to shadow her. In California Ravinia inveigles a PI, Rex Kingston, to help her. Ravinia inserts herself into Rex's life and his investigations. To me she seemed pushy and annoying.
The book follows two story lines. The first is Elizabeth and her everyday troubles: the police suspect her of killing hubby; she's almost broke; unwanted men are asking her out; her daughter is having spells, etc. The second is Ravinia's search for for Elizabeth. Neither thread is very compelling. Moreover the end of the book, which supposedly explains what's going on, is so convoluted as to be almost incomprehensible.
I didn't think this was a terrible book but there seem to be some missing elements. Still, I won't be reading the next book in the series to find out.

Just started Murder by Misrule
historical mystery with Sir Francis Bacon as the detective. So far, wonderful.

I just finished this one as well. I was on a 3-hour flight and was down to the last few pages when we landed. My kids were giving me a hard time about reading as we were walking through the terminal, but I had to get to the end!

I LOVED this 'Cold Case' Mystery and highly recommend it

Finished Kenneth Fearing's The Big Clock yesterday. I'm going to finish Mary Kelly's A Cold Coming (halfway through) and move on to The Lodger, by Marie Belloc Lowndes.

I read the first Aimee Leduc mystery. I liked it but didn't love it. Do the stories get better?

I didn't love the first one either and waited months to go back to the series. The formula for her stories remains the same: physical danger for Aimee, past emotional baggage and love problems for Aimee, very, very complicated noir plots, usually trouble with the police, lots of detail about Paris. I'm not sure if the writing gets better or if I just got into the flow, but I've enjoyed the series after the first one.

CR: Sunday Nights at Seven by Jack Benny."
Lots of love on these threads for "The Martian"....so I requested it from my libary :)

Thanks, Ruth. I'll probably try another to see how Aimee is progressing. :)

I love Kate Atkinson also Bill. 8:D
I stayed up half the night reading The Girl on the Train Jenn and have put it in my re-read pile. I enjoyed it so much. 8:D
Sorry Tom, still lagging behind on the Charlie Parker series ...other stuff keeps getting in the way. 8:(
Hope you all had a happy easter.

thanks! I was just about to ask about that.
I've recently finished The Engagement, by Georges Simenon -- one his roman durs -- not a Maigret series novel. Excellent book.
Currently reading The Lodger, by Marie Belloc Lowndes -- also much more of a psychological study than an "action" novel.

They do sound interesting, Jan. I've added to my TBR (probably purchase) list.. :)

Thanks Jan for the recommendation - haven't read this author before. I have added 'The Color of Law" to my shelf.

Jan, you convinced me. I requested The Color of Law from the library :)

Meanwhile Bartolo's gang is short on personnel because so many men have been drafted. This opens lieutenant spots for some ambitious but inept criminals like Freddy DiGiacomo. Freddy wants to push out Montooth Dix who rules 'Brown Town', the neighborhood where African-Americans and Cubans live. During Freddy's failed attempt to kill Montooth he loses two men, then insists Montooth be murdered because he killed two white men. Joe, who likes Montooth, is ordered to set him up. Joe's life is further complicated by his torrid affair with the mayor's wife and by the ghost of a young boy who seems to be related to him.
The author does an excellent job creating a dangerous atmosphere as Joe hobnobs with gangsters. It seems that being a gang boss is a tricky business, as there's always someone ready to bump you off and take your place.
This is a good story with vivid, interesting characters - recommended for fans of mystery/thriller or gangster books.
