Yep, I'm with Travis. Though I would wear a scarf rather than a sweatshirt. Honestly, if there was no snow, I'd still be wearing flip-flops for a trip to the store too.

In -30C weather, I wear (starting at the top) no hat, no scarf, 3/4 length sleeved top, down jacket, gloves only when I'm scraping the car, jeans, 1 pair socks and boots if lots of snow, regular shoes if all packed down.

I carry, hat, scarf, extra mitts in the car in case of breakdown.

Agreed!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments You all wear that few clothes even if you're outside for a full day, like Sarah? Or just for walking to the car or the end of your street?

It's -27C (-16F) with a wind chill of -35C (-31F) here in northern Alberta this morning - warmer than Mars.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I work outside all day what I wear is tshirt long sleeve shirt, hooded swearshirt, sweatpants a pair of uninsulated fabric bibs one more sweatshirt and a hat. Thats in the barn. If i go outside a carhartt jacket and if need be a pair insulated carhart bibs. We are talking -10c or colder. Im often out of the house 16-20 hrs a day.

message 157: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Unlike a house to keep animals healthy you want to keep temps within a couple degrees of outside. Basically as cold as you can without freezing the water lines. The oldest group of heifers don't even have a door to close it stays open so they can go outside if they want. Its probably -20c out there which is fine all they need is a wind free dry place. The cold doesn't bother them as long as energy levels in the feed are adequate and since they drink from a water vat just have to be sure the top of thewater doesn't freeze so they can drink. Has to be super cold for that to happen but even then it only requires breaking the ice a couple times a day

Not too many people are going to go outside for a full day at -30C, and they'd likely be bundled up in a ski-suit, toque, scarf, mitts, winterized boots. I, personally, would not be out going outside for a full day at -30C. I would at -4C, and I probably would wear have a toque and gloves, but that's it.

When my ex-husband was working up in Cambridge Bay in the Arctic, the temps were -50C, and he said the kids were racing up and down the streets on their snowmobiles, with their jackets unzipped. You get acclimatized.

message 159: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments During a school break one week it was probaly -20 I got a job with a contractor shoveling snow off roofs in a housing complex. 6 am you start all bundled up. By 8 am I'd be down to just insulated bibs and a tshirt and hat. If you are active you won't usually feel the cold. Biggest thing is to not sweat

message 160: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Plowed driveway from 12-3am wasn't even snowing when I finished. Went to sleep. Come walking back outside at 6am to find 1-2 ft fresh snow in driveway. That completely killed any type of good mood I had. Cannot explain the frustration. If it happened during the day no big deal. But seriously just took a nap and boom

message 161: by Maureen (new)

Maureen (maureencean) Hasn't stopped snowing yet south of town Travis..., but it is heading back north!

message 162: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments I agree, you get used to the cold. This is my fourth winter in this area and I'm really more tolerant to the cold now. And my kids are evidently much more tolerant than me, since they are being raised here.
It's true the clothes here are warm but light, and not so much layering is needed. Have not skin exposed is VERY important. And ears covered too, to not feel this "needle" sensation...

That's insane! And stressful.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments And then it will just stop. The sun will come out and life goes on. We just need a couple 2-3 days to get dug out and maybe catch some sleep

My understanding is that Pulaski has been spared this storm. It has been north. It could just drop south amd head down there they like to get dumped on down there.

And all this chat about weather has made me remember this:

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments I just finished watching Transporter: The Series. If the James Bond and the Fast and Furious movie franchises had a child, it would be this series. And Brit Actor - Chris Vance - is really easy on the eyes, ladies.

Also saw the weather: wintry rain and sleet with accumulations for the next 24-36 hours. How can ice accumulate? Been down South too long to remember.

To everyone going huh? Football talk. I know Marnie hasn't been around but she is a Seahawk fan I'm a Packer fan an next week is final playoff game for NFC champion and a superbowl appearance.

message 172: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Oh my goodness. I'm from WA state originally and can't wait for football (Seahawks) season to be done so my Facebook feed can get back to normal, lol! It is amazing to see so many Seahawks "fans" that have appeared amongst my friends, lol!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I feel really bad about this, but a new colleague started at work and she's taking the same train as me. I'm now very worried that I will have to spend all my train time making smalltalk instead of reading books.

Just ask her if she likes reading? You might find she is a closet bookworm and you can discuss books instead ;-)

message 176: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments We left our boat unattended last night for the first time so we were feeling a little uneasy. Now we have weather warnings for snow and wind - think we might have to drive out to check on it in a bit just in case!

But I think I need to wait a bit before jumping back in the car again. A motorway near us is closed due to an accident earlier in the day and it's caused havoc on the roads. It took me 1 hr 15 min to get home from work - normally takes 10 mins! And I didn't have an audiobook downloaded so had to listen to cheesy music on the radio!

Sounds like that might be a good idea Sarah! The weather forecast does look pretty awful over the next day or so. I don't mind snow but the wind...urgh!

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments We have freezing rain here today. The roads were icy yesterday and now they'll be madness. Last week it was -30C and now it's +2. Crazy.

message 180: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Boo for freezing rain :( we had that yesterday but it wasn't bad driving. I didn't have to go too far yesterday to pick up some treats for Blake :) our news here freaks out when there is freezing rain because they don't do anything to the streets to prep for snow/freezing rain, I guess :(

message 181: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments I hate freezing rain above all else.

I spent the last three evenings at the Banff Mountain Film Festival, World Tour. We saw 28 films, over 8 hours, and stood in line waiting for the doors to open for 3 hours. There were some amazing films - most of them are set in the mountains or are adventure/extreme sports - like surfing in Norway in the middle of winter. The Banff Mountain Film Festival takes the films and shows them at venues around the world. If you google it, you may find that it will be showing in your area. Highly recommended!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lots of rain here too!

So, a month ago we had the asbestos issue. An hour ago, there was an accident on the highway that passes around my city with a truck carrying hydrochloric acid, which ended up all over the road. Again, big disaster, people having to keep there doors and windows shut, people in the traffic jam that followed evacuated... Luckily our neighbourhood is more up north and not affected, but it's crazy that two such serious things happen within a month in the same city, where nothing ever happens.

Also fun is that trains are not allowed past there, and the highway is already congested in two directions because of another truck that fell over this morning and left a huge mess, which is still not cleaned up.

Wonder how I'm going to get home tonight...

message 183: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Oh my goodness, Peggy! Hope everything gets cleaned up! Stay safe :-)

Sarah | 18549 comments Wow your town really is having some bad luck. Hope you can get home without too much of a problem and doesn't take you as long as it took me yesterday.

message 188: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm on the train now, one hour later than I planned to. I think the worst has passed, except for people stuck in the traffic jam, who will have to wait for quite some time longer until everything is cleared and cleaned.

I love inspector gadget too!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Kniwing some folks here are checking goodreads or facebook during work hours I had to laugh. The NFIB (national federation of independant business) just sent me, since I'm a member, a link asking if I am plagued with these common office problems. #1 on the list was 21% of employees spend at least an hour of their workday surfing the net for personal reasons.

message 194: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments Only 21% and only an hour? I would say it's even more.

message 195: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Only 21%?? I find that amazing. Though maybe I'm biased because I work in a government office (and you know what government employees are like!)

message 196: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I thought 21% was low too. But I bet if they looked at less than an hour thatvnumber shoots way up there

message 197: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments yeah, that's true.

message 198: by Travis (new)

message 199: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Just spent all day listing things on freecycle and gumtree. Starting to panic slightly as we handed our notice in on the flat today so we have 4 weeks until we will be living on our boat for real! Annoyingly, our landlord wants to move someone in as soon as we move out which means we'll have to put up with prospective tenants coming in to view the property - well as long a they don't mind piles of crap everywhere then good luck to them! I think I deserve a cuppa now!

message 200: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Jan 19, 2015 07:24AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments You do deserve a cuppa, Sarah. Maybe put a couple of shots of Baileys into it for good measure. But, how exciting (except for the packing part).
