Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice,
I have never had the gas but one of my daughters loves it and the other two do not like the way it makes them feel (out of control and anxious). My dentist always uses it on the little kids when they need fillings. He schedules their appointments really early in the morning. It is tricky stuff. If they get too much, they can get sick to their stomach so he likes to work on them before they eat. He has to work quickly so they don't get upset, but he also needs to control the amount of gas escaping from the mask and affecting himself. The gas is really only to keep them calm so that they don't "think" they are feeling things after the novicane has made them numb. The 10 yo grandson has decided that he does not like the way it makes him feel any more and actually told the dentist that he didn't want him to use it at his last two procedures. He was fine without it and the dentist honored his decision.

I am surprised that they would not allow you to have it after you asked. Some insurance does not cover it and maybe that could be why they told you you did not need it. Even if it were not covered and you were willing to pay out of pocket, they still could have allowed you to have it if it made your experience better.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Peggy,
I understand that the cleaning - plaque removal is not pleasant but if you keep on top of it, it is better than avoiding it for long periods of time. I know because I tried to do it too. As much as I love my dentist personally, I have always hated the cleaning. I still have to talk myself through it and make myself relax when I feel my shoulders getting all tight and up around my ears. I have found over the years that it hurts less when I am not all tensed up. I know how easy it sounds for me to say it, but it is really true. My dentist allows headphones if we want to listen to music or an audio book. I have never done it, but I have learned to focus on the music playing in the background. It helps me not think about what is happening. I also like to listen to the dentist talking while he is working on someone else. I know if I raise my hand up that they will STOP immediately and let me take a breath and let me get back under control too. They can move to another area and let things settle down if they found a really sensitive spot.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments You're completely right Cherie and I know so, but still, it's so much easier to avoid... ;-) I got this air floss thingie at home now and it should really help prevent plaque, but I suppose I should go to the dentist first.

Tasha, that stuff sounds amazing! I never knew something like that existed. I'm using a special toothpaste which helps too.

Puppy Bowl vs Kitten Bowl
 photo puppy-bowl_zpseubwztkh.jpg photo kitten bowl_zpsjkjo47pq.jpg

Which one are you watching?

Any favorite players yet?

message 405: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Puppy Bowl, of course!

I can't decide on one favorite. But my top three would be:
USS Maloy looks like he'd be so much fun to play with, Chicklet is like the fluffy stuffed animal you want to cuddle with, and Coveia's eyes - well, Coveia looks a lot like Jingo probably did as a pup.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I would choose Kitten Bowl. I do love me some cute kitties! There is a black and white one who reminds me of my tuxedo kitty when he was little :)

Stephanie Puppy bowl for me!! We are recording it cause we went to the Capitals hockey game today so we are still on our way home :-)

Home now! Such a fun hockey game to be at today! Blues won 4-3. Plus I think I saw Brodeur up in the managers box so I was pretty happy :-)

Sarah | 18549 comments Based on the pictures alone, Puppy Bowl but both would be cute. Is this a TV program? There are some handsome looking puppies in that link J'mom!

Just quickly revisiting the dentist talk - I had no problems as a kid with the dentist. Then when I was around 16 my dentist turned private so I no longer had one and I didn't get around to finding a new one. So 3 years went by and when I eventually got around to finding a new dentist, I had to have 7 fillings. It was then that I developed a phobia. I think I had the 7 spaced over two sittings with numerous injections which didn't have the desired effect so I had a lot of pain but then with additional numbing, I couldn't feel my whole face pretty much. But since doing my hypnotherapy training, I've cured myself of the phobia and I don't have any problems now. I still don't like the drill and injections that much but at least I don't panic or get anxious or faint like I've done in the past.

So I've had a really surreal day today. I was sat in front of the log burner on my boat and there was this really weird sound like something out of a science fiction movie - think laser guns. Well it really freaked me out so I looked out the window to see the canal had frozen over completely and it was the ice making a noise because someone was filling the lock up near me which made the water level near my boat drop a couple of inches and I guess it was the ice being lifted away from the water surface which made the noise. And then this afternoon, I was reading my book on the sofa and I could hardly pay attention for the noise that the crows were making coming in to roost - there must have been about 30 of them and I was starting to feel like I was in the Hitchcock movie.

LOL,great ambientation Sarah!

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments I imagine you'll have lots of new experiences that will seem strange, Sarah. The sound of the ice lifting must have seemed surreal.

message 413: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sarah, I do not want to freak you out, but is there any concern about the water freezing around the boats in the cannals? They are made of wood after all. Are they re-inforced at the water line for situations like that? It never occured to me that this would happen. So - the boats go up and down as the locks fill and empty? yeah - that sounds like a stupid question, but are you actually mored in a lock where boats travel through all of the time?

I hear that the crows can be really, really noisy. My sister lives in southern Oregon in a very wooded area with big oak trees around and she said that is is quite the racket at certain times of the year when they are traveling through. We have a small group of crows that basically live on the campous where I work and I love to watch them walking around.

message 414: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Great questions Cherie! The old narrowboats were made from wood but ours was built in 1982 and is made from steel so it is much more robust thankfully. The hull is painted with special paint which protects it from the elements. If we were to drive through ice or another boat were to push an ice sheet in to our boat it would possibly slough off some of this paint but that's the only damage it would do. Whereas the old wooden ones, a sheet of ice going in to the side of one has been known to make a whole in the hull and sink them. The ice is not even 1 cm think at the moment and had melted by the end of the day although I suspect it will be frozen again today.

As for locks, to fill one up takes thousands of gallons of water which is taken from the canal. We are moored about 1/2 mile from a lock. The water level will drop a couple inches as the lock fills and then would fill up again as the other boat comes through and the water is emptied back in to the stretch I am on. Normally I wouldn't notice this but with the ice (and the strange noise) it got my attention this time. Locks are only big enough for 2-4 boats (depending on the lock size and boat size) on the canal I'm on and you're not allowed to moor in them.

message 415: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Crows. I hate those evil retched creatures. They come in by the hundreds and get into my feed piles. Right now I have been letting them be since there is a lot of snow on the plastic. They are greedy and can't be happy just eating off the open face of the bunk they have to poke holes in the plastic if theh can get toit which has cost me hundreds if not thousands of dollars in spoiled silage through the years. Luckily they are smart and if you kill just 1 and leave it near the feed bunk they will stay away. Like I say with the plasric safe under snow I been letting them alone. Problem is they are ao smart they know I shoot them so if they see me even walk by an open barn door they fly away. Dad does not shoot them so they don't fly from him. Really freaky how smart they are. There are at times 500 or more out there. At sunrise and sunset there will be thousands flying over. I hate them. They roost in the city at an estimated 20000 crows. When sun comes up they leave citt to come harass us country folk.

message 416: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Wow that's a lot of crows! My 30 seems pretty measly now. Yes I knew they were intelligent. It's funny how they fly from you but not your Dad!

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments I can't picture him. Is he in the first book?

message 419: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Not sure which book maybe not until book 2. He is either Sandar or Gregor Tregain. 2 brothers one is the dog one is the mountain. Both are Lancaster minions.

message 420: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I'm pretty sure he is in the tournament that occurs in book 1 but he isn't focused on that much.

message 421: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments He's in the last season of the show, which was season 4. So maybe later? I've heard that until the last season, the seasons are loosely one book per season. Then they are jumping around a bit.

Travis is right, his brother is The Hound.

message 422: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments He does appear in season 1 TV series, then again in 2 and 4 - but it's a different actor each time. The one who is huge and won the thing Travis posted is the series 4 Mountain! It's the Tourney of the Hand which The Mountain takes part in in book 1 right near the beginning of the book when (view spoiler)

message 424: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments Okay - Gregor Tregain who is a nasty piece of work. Funny, I think of Sandar as The Hound, and Gregor as Gregor and not The Mountain.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hope you were snug and warm last night, Peggy. I noticed it was snowing where you are when I was getting ready to go to work this morning. My weather app shows you at -2C and the London folks getting the snow now and 3 C there now.

Oh you are getting some snow too Janice. Burr -9 C. Toronto and you east coast folks are getting down there too. -10 C.

I look at the number in C but 8 just doesn't compute for me like 46 F does. I get the higher temperatures though. I'm just nattering. I better go to bed. Night all!

I am not too far away from London and we didn't get any snow either, although some was forecast. I guess we have been lucky as some parts of the UK have been hit by quite a lot recently. Well, a lot by UK standards anyway! We could get some this morning according to the local weather forecast. We shall see...

Sarah | 18549 comments I'm really excited - the courier just delivered my mobile wifi internet device so that I can have internet on the boat. I'll try it out this evening when I get to the boat - it better bloody work is all I can say right now!

No snow here in Bristol but it is pretty damn cold. Did you not have a bit of snow on Tuesday Lisa? My parents in Maidenhead had some apparently.

I don't think I could go along to a book group if I hadn't read the book so I admire you Berit - I think I'd feel like a kid again not having done my homework ;-)

message 437: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments Internet in the boat, that's cool. And absolutely necessary!
What are your plans regarding the boat? How much time will you be "moving" and "anchored"? (not sure this is the right vocabulary, sorry...)

message 438: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Yes Sandra it is an absolute necessity! Sounds crazy but our internet usage nearly stopped us from buying a boat as we weren't sure about whether we could get it or not. Two mobile wifi devices from different providers to maximise coverage should be adequate enough though. Whether we can access servers for gaming consistently is a different matter - we will see how it pans out when we get our computers onboard.

Well weekdays we plan on being moored (we don't have an anchor) so it's easy for access to car and public transport to get to work. And then weekends we can go for little jaunts up the canal and when we have longer periods off work we can go further afield.

message 439: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments How interesting to live on a boat, I didn't know people did that until I sought on House Hunters, glad you're getting your Internet :-) the book I did not read was Blindcited, don't recall the authors name.

message 440: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Yep lots of people live on boats - it's much cheaper than living in a flat or house. I'm looking forward to all the extra books I'll be able to buy with my savings ;-)

Was it Blindsighted by Karin Slaughter by any chance Berit?

message 441: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Yes that was it. It could be a great book I just wasn't in the mood at the time, if you know what I mean :-)

message 442: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Do you also have direct neighbours Sarah? I'm not sure how to envision it when you're moored. Are there 10 boats in a row, or are you somewhere alone? And is it in a harbour or something?

I feel sad. The bookfair was so disappointing and I ended up buying 0 books, instead of the 10-20 I had hoped for. I don't get it, I've been there before and they always have tons of English books, and now there were nearly none.

message 443: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Where we are moored at the moment, we have a boat in front of us and behind us - this tends to be the case in places with good access and nearer to towns. We're not in a harbour or marina, just along the side of the canal. When we were bringing the boat own over xmas, we were often out in the middle of nowhere with no other boats surrounding us.

That's a shame about the bookfair Peggy. You'll have to do what Camilla did and come visit the UK with an empty suitcase ;-)

message 444: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments It's -18C (-1F) and snowing here in northern Alberta. We are to get 10-15 cms (6") of snow today which may cancel my trip to my parents'. Six hours fighting bad roads is not my idea of fun.

Stephanie That's a bummer about the book fair, Peggy:(
Yay for Internet, Sarah!!

My hubby and I are checking out a different apartment complex this weekend :) our lease isn't up till May but we drove by it the other day and saw that it is attached to a small lake/pond and it has a dock where you can fish from :) and a little beach that hopefully allows dogs to swim:) plus it looks more structurally sound then our current apartment.

Yes, we did have a little bit of snow on Tuesday morning Sarah. It didn't amount to very much though. How much did your parents get in Maidenhead? We had a snow shower today too but it didn't settle or anything. It is still so cold though.
