Tessa Herondale~Carstairs (jessawessa) Okay!

message 402: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey guys!
The readathon seems like it's going good so far!
What do you all want to plan for November? I'm open to any ideas

message 403: by Tessa (new)

Tessa Herondale~Carstairs (jessawessa) I'm gonna be pretty busy, so I can't do a tbr shelf challenge... maybe a self-tracking sort of challenge?

message 404: by [deleted user] (new)

Ooo ok that sounds good - any ideas for a specific challenge? Maybe ReLiz, if you want to run something since you haven't had the change since you became a mod?

Also Sarah I have the theme for November BOTM if there are challenge week winners to suggest books. Otherwise I'll open a thread to everyone.

message 405: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Cool! Also Natalie, you can open up a thread for BOTM, we don’t have any winners this month.

message 406: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok great I'm up for any challenge type, so if you have any specific ideas ReLiz that you want to do

message 407: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll put the BOTM thread up now

message 408: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok then I will start brainstorming and try to think of something

Also your theme won for the November BOTM and Tessa wants to know what you mean by a diverse setting

message 409: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha ok thanks

message 410: by Tessa (new)

Tessa Herondale~Carstairs (jessawessa) have you guys stopped getting updates on your feed? I have

message 411: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Yah, mine stopped a few days ago I think it might be a new update

message 412: by Tessa (new)

Tessa Herondale~Carstairs (jessawessa) hmm maybe... it's so annoying and disorienting though

message 413: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 27, 2020 07:36AM) (new)

Ok so here are some basic ideas that I came up with for a reading challenge for November. I thought it would be cool to let this challenge be kinda customized, so like each person participating picks a specific genre, time period, etc.-
- Time Periods: everyone picks a different time period (1890s, Medieval, 1940s, etc) and has to read as many books as they can within that time period
- Genres: everyone picks a genre that they don't normally read and only reads books within that genre
-Anticipated Reads: everyone reads their most anticipated books, books on their shelves that they have been wanting to read but haven't gotten to, etc.
- Setting: we pick a general setting that all books need to take place in
- Page to Screen/Stage: only read books that have been adapted into a movie or play
- Colors: read only books within one specific cover color
- Display Covers: pick books to read solely based on the cover design without giving any thought to the actual story or summary
- Series Finishers: read books from series that you have previously started but haven't gotten to finishing yet

message 414: by [deleted user] (new)

Also I think I'm going to send out a broadcast message after we decide what we are doing for November with updates for the group; here are my topics so far, if you have anything to add let me know

- November Challenge (whatever we decide will be added here)
- Readathon reminder to enter completed books and end date reminder
- BOTM November nominations

Hey! So what challenge do you all want to do for November? I put some idea above. (ReLiz this is specifically you since you want to run it)

message 416: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Oooo I like the stage to screen and the time period ones!

message 417: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok then ReLiz it is ultimately up to you, so whichever one you want to run and think would be fun. Out of those three the two that don't get chosen, we will definitely save for another month!

message 418: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey guys!
Happy (almost) Halloween!!!
I am going to send out a broadcast message with updates later today, but I need you all's confirmation on a few things.

Sarah- is challenge week for October still taking place right now? If so I will remind everyone to do that

ReLiz- I want to put an announcement about whichever challenge you have chosen to do, so let me know for that

Also ReLiz, when you get the chance, we should probably put out the instructions, rules, sign ups, etc. for the challenge. If you need any help, I'll be on for a little longer today and maybe more tonight.

message 419: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth I'd like to do the color challenge. I'm busy today but I can put up stuff for the challenge tomorrow.

message 420: by [deleted user] (new)

ReLiz ⚡️ wrote: "I'd like to do the color challenge. I'm busy today but I can put up stuff for the challenge tomorrow."

Sounds great!

message 421: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Yup the challenge is still taking place!

message 422: by [deleted user] (new)

Sarah wrote: "Yup the challenge is still taking place!"

Ok cool! I will put out the broadcast later tonight

message 423: by Elizabeth (last edited Oct 31, 2020 01:26PM) (new)

Elizabeth I posted the info for the challenge! Let me know if I need to fix or add anything.

message 424: by [deleted user] (new)

ReLiz ⚡️ wrote: "I posted the info for the challenge! Let me know if I need to fix or add anything."

Omg it looks awesome! You are really good at explaining things and all haha.
Also I will be adding up final scores for the readathon and announcing teams tomorrow

message 425: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Hey! So I was thinking, we are almost at 300 members so maybe we could do like a challenge or something to celebrate?

message 426: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh yes that would be great! Do you have any specific ideas?
The only thing that I can think of off the top of my head is something with 300 pages??

message 427: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Yah I was think the same thing, I don’t know how that would work though. Maybe like a 300 page Readathon? Or we could even do like a 300 hour long readathon? Those are just some ideas I have right now but I’ll probably think of more later

message 428: by Tessa (new)

Tessa Herondale~Carstairs (jessawessa) Isn’t it 600?

message 429: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh yes haha 600

message 430: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Omg it is 600! Lol I don’t even know how I got that wrong 😂

message 431: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok so I'm going to put out the theme suggestion for December BOTM, we had a cool new idea with single words as themes rather than the generic themes that I think I might do.

Also we have had a few requests to do a Winter Readathon the month of December similar to the Spooky October one, with Christmas, winter, Hanukah, etc. books if one of you all wants to run it this time?

message 432: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Ooo I like the single word themes and I can run the readathon if you would like

message 433: by [deleted user] (new)

OK! If you want to, that would be great.

message 434: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) okay cool!

message 435: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 16, 2020 06:47AM) (new)

Ok so I have a few new ideas for the group to possibly help increase participation and activity. Let me know what you all think and if there is anything you want to change/add!

- Since we now have quite a few past BOTMs that are the first in series, I was thinking I would do a Series Catch Up BOTM along with the normal monthly BOTM. So I would go through our group bookshelf and put all the book from series in a poll. What do you all think? Should we do this monthly or every other month?

- Discussion Leader: Discussion on BOTMs have been a little slow, and I've seen other groups use discussion leader. For this, after the book has been chosen, we would put out a topic for "Discussion Leader Sign-Up" where members could sign up to lead the BOTM discussion, ask questions, start conversations, etc.

- Maybe doing some Buddy Reads?

- Book Nooks - members request to open a "book nook" where they can chat with other members about their readings, give updates, etc.

- Monthly Newsletters - having a section where we put a newsletter with updates for the month ahead, we could each take 3 different months to write the newsletter for to split it up

message 436: by [deleted user] (new)

Also we just got a challenge suggestion that I think would be fun to do in January as a New Year's Resolution Challenge
Here is the link to the suggestion : https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 437: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Ooh yes, I really like that idea and yah it would be perfect for a New Years challenge

message 438: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok cool so then do you think we should do Series catch up BOTMs every month or every other month? Also we could either start that for December or for January

message 439: by [deleted user] (new)

We are only 7 members away from 600!!!!
So Sarah I remember you said we should do something to celebrate, here are the ideas that I came up with
- A 600 minute readathon (10 hours)
- 600 page readathon
- Elect another new mod?
- Read books related to certain words (600, members, celebration, etc.)

message 440: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) I think we should do the series catch up every other month so that if we want to do something else for the month it's not too crowded and as for the 600 members celebration (wow I can't believe we are almost at 600 members!) I really like the 600 minute readathon as well as the one with the certain words, we should wait for Tessa and ReLiz to see what they think as well.

message 441: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok great! Once they give their opinions we can start planning.
Maybe let's start the series BOTMs in January then.

message 442: by Tessa (new)

Tessa Herondale~Carstairs (jessawessa) I think the fourth option is the best

message 443: by sahrai (last edited Nov 21, 2020 09:41AM) (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Alright so I was wondering if I should open up the December Readathon sign-ups today?

message 444: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Also since it is themed what types of genres or themes are we doing? I already got Winter and Set During Christmas, Hanukkah or New Years down but is there anything else?

message 445: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep that sounds great! Hmm maybe we could throw in another genre, like something happy and fun for the holidays - maybe books about family or contemporary?

message 446: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Ooh yah that will work!

message 447: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok I think this is a really cool challenge idea given by Emma for a yearlong 2021 challenge:
"What if we did something with our Goodreads Reading Challenge, like where you divided up your number (for example purposes, let's say I wanted to read 24 books) by 12. And then every month we had a challenge category, similar to what we do now, and tried to read our allotted amount of books each month? And maybe on one of the months, we do a sort of catch-up month in case you didn't read the amount you needed to. We could also maybe have a thread for encouragement and recommendations and stating our goals."

message 448: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth I like that idea! I actually was planning on doing a personal goal where I read at least one book a month with a certain prompt (epic fantasy, diverse fantasy, new release, stand-alone, etc.)

message 449: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh that would be a cool add on!
Maybe we could come up with like 12 different genres plus some extra options, then those would be optional or something if you want to challenge yourself more?

message 450: by sahrai (new)

sahrai (sarahmirzayee) Oooo yes I really like those ideas!
