Is that Walden you're holding in the pic? 😜😂"

Thanks Emma! :D It was a fun time, but also exhausting!
That's actually just a trail guide I'm holding in the pictures. :)

Emma | meadowroselibrary I'm sure!!
Lol trail guides are great too. ;D

Joanna We actually passed through quite a few areas of NE literary interest...Haverhill, MA, where John Greenleaf Whittier was born and nearby Amesbury where he lived most of his life. We crossed the Merrimack and Concord Rivers and I saw signs for Walden Pond a couple of times. Alas, no time to stop!

Emma | meadowroselibrary That would be awesome!

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments Hi Meg,
These are fantastic pictures!
Nicely done.
Mt. Katahdin is breathtaking, how long
did you stand there admiring it?
I would find it hard to leave this sight.

Your father took a lovely photo of you.
You remind me of a heroine in a novel:
"As the flaxen haired maiden walked
among the trees, her mind full of wonder and of those who gone before her,
some traveling on their way, others
seeking solace, not she, for at this
moment, she beheld the wonders of
God and smiled."

Emma | meadowroselibrary Your right Ruth! She does! :) ❤️

Thanks, Ruth. :) We only had time to stop briefly to look at Katahdin, but I could easily spend all day admiring it! Some day I really want to climb it.
That is a lovely quote...what book is it from? I took my copy of Lowell's poems along on the trip and read 'A Legend of Brittany'...it's a very sad story but there are many passages that are incredibly beautiful. This verse in particular is after my own heart... <3

"There was no beauty of the wood or field
But she its fragrant bosom-secret knew,
Nor any but to her would freely yield
Some grace that in her soul took root and grew;
Nature to her shone as but now revealed,
All rosy-fresh with innocent morning dew,
And looked into her heart with dim, sweet eyes
That left it full of sylvan memories."

Jasmine Shadows (jasmineshadows) | 33 comments Meg,
Thank you so much for sharing those wonderful photos of your trip. It is a delight to see all of the beauty of God's creation from different areas. I agree with you about the heat. I am not a hot weather person, and wouldn't you know that it looks like that is just where the Lord is moving us, the south. Hopefully I will adapt. At any rate, I love the pictures. I love nature photography as well, and I enjoy seeing those by others.
I have not been able to read as much of late due to all of the things going on in my family, and this would have been the perfect time to enjoy several books. I look forward to Grandfather's Chair, as I have not yet read this one. Fortunately, I have access to a copy of it online, because of course it is packed. LOL.
Welcome back and enjoy the rest that being at home affords.

Glad you enjoyed the pictures, Jasmine! :) Where in the south are you all looking to move? I'm sure you will be able to adapt...it's amazing how our bodies adjust. There are things I still miss about the south, but I'm not sure I could get used to all the creepy crawlies I've almost forgotten about up here. ;D

I'm so glad you'll be able to read Grandfather's Chair with us. I don't own a copy so will be reading it online as well.

Now bears........... I guess they probably don't bite..... They probably just swallow... 😜😂😂😂

I remember once when we were living in MO, I looked down and there was a HUGE Luna moth on my arm...yes, I screamed!! I knew it wouldn't hurt me, but my, those thick hairy legs gave me the creeps! Bears are much less scary! ;D

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments This conversation have thrown me
for a loop. Count it on Emma to
find the amusement of Meg's tale
Meg- who runs after a pair of Lynx
that have trespasses on to their
property, goes for long stroll in the
woods and discovers animal remnants,
prefers to get closer to bears for a
better photo, poses with a moose
head, had come face to face with a
moose, and aims to scale a Mt. Katahdin screams at the sight of creepy crawlies?

Suddenly Walden makes sense.😄

I live in the city in Boston. One night after taking a shower I was sitting on the edge of my tub um naked drying my hair with the blow dryer. Since it was a rather warm night I had the window open in the bathroom. All of a sudden I turned my head to see a huge raccoon trying to work its way into my bathroom. I panicked. The only thing I could think to do was aim the blow dryer at it. Now try to get that ridiculous image out of your heads ladies. Lol

Joanna I have a friend up here who kept bees for a while...one night his dogs started barking and he saw a big bear raiding the hives. He grabbed a frying pan and a spoon and chased the bear away. He said that it was only afterwards that he wondered what would have happened if it had NOT run away...lol!

Not near the bathroom yet Ruth. But when we went grocery shopping early during senior hours and were waiting for a cab I think I saw him or one of his relatives waddling down the driveway. I froze in place. Thankfully the cab came soon.

Grandfather's Chair by Nathaniel Hawthorne :)

Hi Meg,
I enjoyed the quote from Lowell's poem.
When I saw your photo the words came
to mind, it isn't from an author nor from anyone else; it was flattering to think it had.
The flowers are pretty, I don't think I have seen those before, except for the
buttercups (is it?).
I gather you found the beach refreshing?
I wish I were there now.

You made up that quote, Ruth? It is lovely...you are quite the writer! :)
Yes, the yellow flowers are buttercups. The purple ones are evening dame's rocket, the blue are forget-me-nots, and I'm not sure what the white ones were but I do know that they belong to the mustard family!
The beach was very refreshing. My dad stayed in the van to get some rest while me and the Amish youth who were with us went for a walk. It felt sooo good to stretch our legs after about 16 hours on the road!

I always think of this passage from Whittier's poem 'The Lumbermen' whenever I'm in the Katahdin region. I don't think he ever visited this part of Maine, but he must have read or heard a great deal about it because he describes it perfectly!

"Where, through lakes and wide morasses,
Or through rocky walls,
Swift and strong, Penobscot passes
White with foamy falls;
Where, through clouds, are glimpses given
Of Katahdin’s sides,—
Rock and forest piled to heaven,
Torn and ploughed by slides!
Far below, the Indian trapping,
In the sunshine warm;
Far above, the snow-cloud wrapping
Half the peak in storm!
Where are mossy carpets better
Than the Persian weaves,
And than Eastern perfumes sweeter
Seem the fading leaves;
And a music wild and solemn,
From the pine-tree’s height,
Rolls its vast and sea-like volume
On the wind of night..."
