Joanna Ok, you don't have to watch this if you're too busy, but talking about bears getting in the house brought it to mind. 😄 It's from that same Canadian TV show as the other bear clip I shared a while back. The link should start right at the beginning of the scene, and the best part goes up to about 10:05...

Joanna "No price is set on the lavish summer;
June may be had by the poorest comer.
And what is so rare as a day in June?
Then, if ever, come perfect days;
Then Heaven tries the earth if it be in tune,
And over it softly her warm ear lays:
Whether we look, or whether we listen,
We hear life murmur, or see it glisten;
Every clod feels a stir of might,
An instinct within it that reaches and towers,
And, groping blindly above it for light,
Climbs to a soul in grass and flowers..."

Joanna Look what came in the mail today!! Do y'all have any idea what kind of discipline it's taking for me not to start reading this right away? 😂 But I have been flipping through the pages (that doesn't count as reading!) and I can understand completely why Herman Melville read this in one day whilst lying in the hay-mow! 😋

Meg,
That is a beautiful book.
Touching history, there is
something reverential about it.
What are your thoughts
as you gently peruse this
tome from Hawthorne's time?

It's so exciting when you're expecting books in the mail! 😄 I couldn't believe how long it took this to get here, though! The seller is only about 2 hours away but the package got sent to NJ and sat in a warehouse for days, so it ended up taking almost 2 weeks!

Thanks Hannah! 😊 I found it on eBay...have you ever shopped for books on there? You can usually find a lot of nice old books.

Have you ever heard of BetterWorldBooks? They have really good prices, it's always free shippinh, and I trust their definition of conditions.

I'm actually not sure how old this edition is as there is no copyright in it. But it is always with a feeling of reverence that I handle an old book, and especially one written by Mr. Hawthorne. 😊

Oh yes, sometimes one can find better prices on Ebay than Amazon. Thriftbooks is great too.

Emma, yes I have heard of betterworldbooks! Haven't bought anything from them yet but their prices look good. Has anyone tried Biblio.com? They claim to have many rare editions.

Emma, I just have to tell you...last night I dreamt that there was a black bear AND a polar bear in our yard! The story was rather fuzzy, but somehow I ended up taming the black bear and it would follow me around the house...😂

So do I, Meg. Books once held a
a wonderful standard in being made.

Incidentally, I came across an article,
from an early and rare newspaper,
which had an article:
First printing of Nathaniel Hawthorne's
"Chiefly About War Matters"
The Atlantic Monthly, (Boston), July, 1863.
You may be able to read it if you click

Wow that is really neat, Ruth! I couldn't make out much of it from those pictures but I did find the complete article in Google books and will read it soon. It is a work of Hawthorne's which I'm not familiar with at all! This link should go directly to the page. http://www.google.com/books/edition/T...

Emma | meadowroselibrary Wow! Is that normal for Maine?

message 482: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Emma wrote: "Wow! Is that normal for Maine?"

No, I'm pretty sure today was an all-time record for heat. Some summers we never reach 90! The frost wasn't too unusual though. I've heard a few old-timers talk about snow in July before!

Emma | meadowroselibrary Wow that's cool! It got hotter than that in TN, I remember the real feel being 100°!!

message 484: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Emma wrote: "Wow that's cool! It got hotter than that in TN, I remember the real feel being 100°!!"

Oh I can imagine! I remember weeks of these temps when we lived in VA and MO. But we aren't used to it here!

Emma | meadowroselibrary Yeah it was really humid too. Temperatures are a LOT different here in Indiana!! I'm not looking forward to winter... I became a wimp in TN, it got to the 50s and 60s and I'm FREEZING!!! XD The winters rarely got in the teens. In Indiana, it'll get to below zero easily. I'm going to die this winter. XD

message 486: by Joanna (last edited Jun 18, 2020 07:35PM) (new)

Joanna Oh the humidity is the killer! 😲 At least what we're getting now is a dry heat. As for winters - there have been days here when zero felt mild, so I'm afraid you'll get no sympathy from me... 😂

Emma | meadowroselibrary Wow I can't imagine! XD

Joanna Today being Mid-summer's Eve and the Swedish Midsommar festival being cancelled because of the virus, my sister and I decided to have our own little celebration and our own Maypole! 😊

Emma | meadowroselibrary That's beautiful!! ❤️

message 497: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Thanks Emma! 😊 It was our first attempt. I was inspired after re-reading Hawthorne's story, The Maypole of Merry Mount this morning! Ours is very modest by comparison...

"Never had the Maypole been so gayly decked as at sunset on midsummer eve. This venerated emblem was a pine-tree, which had preserved the slender grace of youth, while it equalled the loftiest height of the old wood monarchs. From its top streamed a silken banner, colored like the rainbow. Down nearly to the ground the pole was dressed with birchen boughs, and others of the liveliest green, and some with silvery leaves, fastened by ribbons that fluttered in fantastic knots of twenty different colors, but no sad ones. Garden flowers, and blossoms of the wilderness, laughed gladly forth amid the verdure, so fresh and dewy that they must have grown by magic on that happy pine-tree. Where this green and flowery splendor terminated, the shaft of the Maypole was stained with the seven brilliant hues of the banner at its top. On the lowest green bough hung an abundant wreath of roses, some that had been gathered in the sunniest spots of the forest, and others, of still richer blush, which the colonists had reared from English seed. O, people of the Golden Age, the chief of your husbandry was to raise flowers!"

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments Meg,
That is beautiful. I love you and your sister's spirit
of occasion, so lovingly assembling each flower.
I have never seen anyone celebrate life like that.
It is lovely to see your sister enjoying in the garden,
give her our best.

A side note: have you considered creating
arrangements for altars and weddings?
The pair of you have a natural talent for it.
A flower farm that creates arrangements.
This could be the first series for the portfolio.

The second photo looks as though it came from
Evangeline.

Thank you so much, Ruth. 🤗
About making arrangements for weddings...sadly it's not something we would feel comfortable with these days with all the same-sex marriages, because of course if you discriminate you're in big trouble. 🙁 It's the same thing with our music...we've been asked to play at weddings before but decided not to.

Emma | meadowroselibrary That is just so sad! That you can't even feel comfortable doing use what you love and your talent for something like that! I hadn't really thought about that, but you're right, you would get into big trouble and that just makes me so sad how the world had changed.
