I like people names for pets. I can't remember having pets with typical pet names. We even named our chickens. My favorite chickens were named George & Martha! We did have a lamb named Fleecy. That was the only pet who had a pet name, though.🐣🐑

Allyson used to always name our chickens, too Pamela. 😂

Pamela | 2209 comments When our chickens got old and sick, we actually had our vet euthanize them. Then we buried them and had small graveside services. Our neighbor thought it was ridiculous and asked why we didn't just wring their necks. I thought that was rather mean spirited and was glad when that neighbor moved away!

Yeah, that's how Allyson's always been. Not that I wasn't considerate of them, I just didn't care *quite* as much. 😂

Joanna So as some of you know, my dad drives for the Amish. It is a little supplemental income for us, plus he enjoys it and it does make for some fun adventures at times! This week has been really busy. Yesterday he had to drive down to Boston (8 hours away) to pick some young people up at the train station and bring them up here. He left about 10:30 yesterday morning, picked them up at 8:30 in the evening, then drove straight home, arriving at about 4:30 AM! And THEN, he was supposed to drive out to the Allagash (90 miles away) and drive some boys up the river with their canoes at 6! I've always wanted to see the Allagash so of course I begged to go along! 😂 Well anyway, that was what was supposed to happen, but on the way to Boston yesterday the brakes on the van started making a terrible scraping noise and weren't working right. So he drove all the way home like that, but of course didn't dare drive way out in the wilderness! We had to wait till the garage opened, which was at 6, when we were supposed to be there already, and no way to get in touch with the boys to tell them we would be late because there's no cell service out there. It turned out to be a simple fix, thankfully, but we didn't get on the road until at least 6:30 and it takes 2 1/2 hours to get there (a good 20-mile stretch is just a dirt logging road). Finally got there about 9:30, but they had already found another driver...so, we turned around and went home, and my dad went to bed! 😄 So in a way, it was a complete waste of time, but unavoidable because there just was no way to communicate with them. I enjoyed it though! I've been wanting to see this area for so long and it was good just to get a glimpse, though now it has whetted my appetite! I told my dad I want to move out here and be a bear guide!

Joanna To give an idea of how remote this was, here's a map of Aroostook County. As you can see, aside from several small towns in the eastern section (where we live), the rest is wilderness...there is literally NOTHING but woods, lakes, rivers, and mountains, and the only access are basically logging roads. It is the Alaska of the east!

Joanna I forgot to mention that Thoreau visited the Allagash in 1857! It hasn't changed that much since he was there.

That's really neat, Meg! I would love to see that someday.

Yes it is! The water is so clear. This is another river that Kate Furbish explored and where she made her most important discovery - the Furbish's Lousewort, which grows only along a 100 mile or so stretch of the St. John.
