Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments While the majority of serious cases resulting in hospitalization or death is amongst the aged, there are reports that young people are not exempt. Here is an article.

I'm self isolating because I have asthma and only leaving my house for necessities. I've had people ask me why I'm self isolating. Did I return from holidays? Do I have the virus? Have I been exposed to the virus? That they have to ask is mind numbing. My response is, "Everyone is being asked to self isolate."

Some provinces in Canada are starting to impose fines if returning travellers break the 2 week quarantine. Should have started that sooner. I went and got groceries the other day for a friend who is in quarantine. I learned yesterday that her vehicle was gone from her home. I put myself at risk to go shopping for her and this is the thanks I get. There are too many inconsiderate people out there and why it's risky for me to go out. I can't trust anyone to do what's right.

I learned yesterday that we have 2 cases in our city of 70,000. We don't have enough ICU beds or respirators to deal with the expected need.

Jannene | 3124 comments People are not thinking right now. They are in panic mode and only concerned about themselves. It is really frustrating. Janice, it sounds like she’s not much of a friend if she has you risk yourself while she went out anyway!

I went out yesterday to get a few things and all of the frozen fruits, veggies and potatoes were empty. I was at least able to get some bread items but those were pretty picked over. I think I just may stay home myself and let this all pass. I will likely go outside for a walk around my block. I have to get exercise or I won’t be able to fit into my clothes when we finally are able to return. LOL!

Anyone else seeing snow? Yesterday morning it was 63 degrees by 4 pm it was 20 and today snow in Michigan. It isn’t accumulating but still, I’m not happy with it.

This morning I cut Petes hair! Actually I used my dog grooming clippers on the lower part and scissors on the top 😅 It came out surprisingly well!

This evening I'm getting together with friends to watch a film - on whatsapp! I should be fun. We can chat while we watch. The film is "in this we serve" 1942. An oldy but a goody. Looking forward to it 😊

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I wouldn't be suprised if we're in lockdown after the weekend. Today is not very warm, but it's very sunny, and it's Saturday. so people go out. They go to the beach, some of which are super crowded. They all have time to do garden an house work, so they go to garden centres and hardware stores. Instead of just picking up what they need, they make it a trip for the whole family. Employees in those stores felt unsafe with so many people there and not keeping distance, so they're letting only a certain number of people in. Result is queues outsides the stores. People are cleaning out their houses and there are 1-hour queues at the municipality thing where you can leave stuff for recycling or stuff that's simply broken. And this is all not just in one place, all over the country. Also, there are fewer trains now because so many people are working at home. Today, loads of people decide to take a train trip, just for fun, to have something to do. Results is trains that are crowded because people can't or won't observe the 1.5m distance.

I don't get it. People were screaming to close down schools, and now they take no responsibility at all. They work from home but it seems for many people that's only because they have to or their companies demand them to do so, but not because they understand. It's like they see this as a sudden vacation in which they finally have the time to do all the stuff they never have time to do.

Argh! Stupidity makes me so mad!! It would really ease my mind if (almost) everything closes down and people have no choice but to stay inside.

Kristie | 19123 comments I know, Peggy. It's so frustrating. People want the government to fix the problem, but they don't want to be part of the solution at all, especially if it takes any effort, puts them out, or makes them uncomfortable in any way. It's so sad. People need to realize that the more they socialize, the longer the isolation will last. We could get this over with a lot faster and will less illness if everyone did it properly.

Ugh yes. Why can't we just take responsibility. Do we really need a goverment to order us to stay in our houses because otherwise we still don't get it?

Huh?! So was it a mistake somewhere or did they actually get permission?

We have 125 people from India stuck at Amsterdam airport. They were halfway on their way to India when the pilot was told they were not getting permission to land. So he turned the plane around, back to Amsterdam. However, due to the border restrictions here (no entry for all non-EU residents and some other countries), they're also not allowed into the country. So, stuck at the airport they are..

Countries should be forced to at least take their own people back in..

message 64: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Oh yikes, Peggy! I can’t imagine being stuck at the airport in all of this. Yes, everyone should have to allow their residents back into the country, even if they have to be quarantined.

message 65: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I want to punch everyone walking along the towpath. It's sunnt here so everyone's like "let's go for a walk along the canal". So many people! We've been chopping wood outsside our boatbto shwre eith the boating community and so mqny ppeople have stopped to chat. GO AWAY!!!! At this rate, we'll have a curfew.

The battery went in my thermometer. I went to replace it and accidently broke the whole thing. Aand all the local shops are sold out. I ordered onee on amazon but it will take 2 weeks to be delivered. I hope I don't get it before then.

We're being told here that quite a few people have been thought to have contracted the virus from touching petrol pumps, so we've been advised to use gloves.

My friend is a carer for a very elderly couple. She's mivedd in with them and we're looking after her cats and boat. She has very kindly decided to pay us for doing so which will help us massively. Yesterday our government announced how it would help employees and businesses with wages and it was very generous. Employees wwill have 80% of their wges paid up to £2400 per month. But us self employed get just £380 per month. I'm livid!!!

Kristie | 19123 comments I was just saying in the watcha doin' thread that I've been collecting projects for a long time now and I probably have more to do than I'll even have time at home. Apparently, I've been preparing for this forever and didn't even know it!

I wanted to add making some of the medical masks for my daughter's work place to my list of projects. They are vets and exposed to the public, so they need them. I can't seem to find a place to get the fabric to me at a decent price before the end of the month though. By the time I get the supplies, make the masks, and ship them to her they might not even need them anymore!

message 70: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Oh wow, i have seriously fat fingers. So many spelling mistakes!!

There are 5 million self employed people apparently. I just hope further allowances are brought in next week. What is also frustrating is that employees don't have to do anything, they'll just continue to get money. But for self employed we have to apply for the benefit which will take 5 weeks to come through.

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments That's not enough at all, Sarah! Here the governement is talking about financially helping the banks, compagnies, self employed people, but people who are technical unimployed, don't get much support.
This is a sunny weekend, so when riding my bike to work, everyone was out enjoying the sun. I mean, everyone is ment to stay at home! I know it's difficult, but it's like they don't care, because it's spring now and the weather is fine.
They were strict warnings to not go to the beach this weekend. I hope they don't go. We have now 50 more deaths since yesterday and the doctors said that this is not the peak yet. There are more than 1000 people in the hospitals, with a quarter on ICU.
We went to the supermarket this morning. I had my document, but there was no line and everyone was crowded in the supermarket! I was so mad.
The good news is that I've got my chicken food!

message 72: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sounds like here, Saar. But I thought Belgium had forbidden people to go out except for necessary things like work or groceries? If so, it's crazy that people still don't listen! At least here we're technically still allowed to go places, but keep distance from other people.

message 73: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments I thought they've been saying that going for walks is fine, just stay at least 6 feet away from other people. That's what we've been doing, going for walks with the dogs and chatting with neighbors from a short distance. Is that not right now?

message 74: by Saar The Book owl (last edited Mar 21, 2020 11:45AM) (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Normally the rules are:
- going out if you must work or get groceries.
- you can exercice with max. 1 person, 1 metre and half from each other.
- you can go out with max. 1 member of the family or 1 friend, 1 metre and a half from each other.

You may go outside, the governement encourage that to walk, ride,...but keep the distance. Not what I've saw today...People got excited about the sun, I think.

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments People can't go anywhere, everything is closed, so they go outside. Children can't play in the parks, because they are closed.

message 76: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Oh... so, you're seeing a lot of people out and about who are not keeping their distance from each other. Got it.

When we walk our dogs we see plenty of people outside and stop to chat, but we're keeping a safe distance away. I'm glad they didn't change that.

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Yes, indeed :)

message 78: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments And especially with the weather like today, people all flock to the public outdoors that are can't be closed, like beaches and forests.

Imagine if people were forced to stay inside the house... we would for sure have a physical and mental health crisis at the end of this.

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Yes, that's for sure.

message 80: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4524 comments Getting outside is a good thing, mentally and physically. Just not in close groups, keep that 6 foot distance. And with the schools closed parents need to be able to open spaces for their kids to safely use up some of that pent up energy. My husband and I have continued to go for walks everyday being mindful of other people. We've been housebound for about a week and a half now and will probably be that way for quite a while longer. He was recently diagnosed with an autoimmune condition (IGG4) and started chemo treatments last week. So he definitely isn't going anywhere and no one is allowed to visit. He's feeling fine and is okay otherwise. His 86 year old cousin called today to say he was coming over today to visit. He was bored. I told him absolutely not. I did a big shopping a few days ago (wore gloves and wiped everything down with Lysol wipes) and so we're good for a few weeks.
My office (I'm still working p/t) was shut down as of Monday and employees were encouraged to work from home. Unfortunately the only thing we can access is our work email. No shared files where all of our work actually exists. The regular staff will continue to be paid so they'll be fine (financially at least). Ironically our customers are mostly unemployed (through the Department of Labor) or welfare recipients and we can't provide any services at this time. People who can't work from home and can't work at their normal jobs (those in the service industries primarily) are really in trouble and can't even get temporary assistance. This is a real mess.
You can try to keep yourself as safe as possible but I think after you've taken care of the physical aspects of a self isolation, it's the mental part that becomes tricky. Finding projects to do, things that can be done that were otherwise neglected (all that ironing and closets or attics that need purging), or picking up a new hobby ( like crocheting ). And of course there are all those books to read. I woke up to the smell of fresh baked cookies this morning (at 6 am), cuz hubby is taking so many meds he doesn't sleep well. Thank goodness for those walks. And now without March Madness or other sports, he's watching (and betting) horse racing. Yikes! Later on I'm going to suggest some Netfix shows we meant to watch but never got to.

message 81: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments We're up to 5000 confirmed cases, although we're only testing people in hospital at the moment and 233 deaths.

I can't rememberr if i mentioned it here now or not but a guy at my dad's work was coughing and said he was ok and carried on working. They had to get the boss to send him home. Next day he rings in sick to say he has full corona symptoms. Hopefully my dad hasn't picked it up.

Walking is allowed, with some provisos. Problem is, everyone is doing it. In the same places. So totally defeats the object of social distancing.

message 82: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Oh wow, Roz. Glad you told his cousin no. You have to keep the hubby safe! He would need to be careful right now even without the threat of Corona.

Yes, I'm glad they aren't recommending people stay indoors. That would be really difficult for most people. Socialization is important to our mental, emotional, and therefor physical health. Getting outdoors and staying even a little bit active and being able to see other people even from a distance is all good for us.

Peggy, I'm sure there will be plenty of mental health issues coming out of this regardless. Some people with anxiety and depression are all ready struggling with the isolation and fear. I worry about there being in uptick in suicides. I wouldn't be surprised if divorces increased temporarily after this too with the isolation with family and increased stress and financial concerns, etc. I read that there has been an increase in domestic violence reports. I don't recall the source, but it doesn't seem surprising to me. This is really difficult for a lot of people.

message 83: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Hope your dad is ok, Sarah. That's so scary.

My daughter works with a couple of people who are symptomatic and have been tested. They don't have their results back yet, but they are quarantined now while they wait anyway. The problem is that they may have infected others at work before they were symptomatic. It's really scary.

message 84: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments You're right of course Kristie. This will have a massive impact regardless.

Hope your dad will be fine Sarah!

Rob has some colleagues (including his boss) who don't take this seriously at all. He has a few colleagues who have been coughing, not many people care about keeping distance. However, if they have it, Rob could catch it too. If I want to be super safe I should stay away from Rob, but that's not realistic.

message 85: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Mar 21, 2020 01:33PM) (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Craig is still working too and staying away from him isn't realistic either. We live in the same house. I just assume that if he gets it, I'll get it. But by isolating, at least I won't spread it to anyone else. Fortunately, I don't know of anyone at his work that is showing any symptoms yet and they have stated that if any one of them gets it they will close the whole building. Of course, that may be too late, but it's something.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments My mom in Uruguay, my cousin in Chile, my sister in law in Argentina, all of them have been ranting about people outside enjoying the weather instead of self isolating. I guess stupidity is international. Maybe, as with the Australia's fire, she should pray for rain. :/

message 87: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Yes Rob and I have said that if one of us get it, it's likely we both will. Especially in the confined space of a boat.

message 88: by Sarah (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I took my graphic novel back to the library only to discover the book deposit is closed. The other day when I checked the website, it said it was open. When I got home, I checked it again. The book deposit is closed. They are still offering to do curbside delivery. It sounds that it would be by appointment only as staff are working from home.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Wrap your head around this. US has 50 states. I live in NY but not NYC but because we have NYC our state accounts for over 1/3 of cases in entire country. NY alone has over 10,000 positive cases and 54% are people between 18 and 55. The Navy set up a ship in the harbor for additional hospital. They're setting up field clinics or whatever you call them. My wife says since we haven't been hit in our area if they ask for volunteers for the field hospitals she's going down until her hospital calls and she has to come home.

My brain can't process all this. And I still have a full day running a farm. I wish I was someone just given a lay off to be bored at my house. No rest for the wicked I guess

message 91: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments That is so scary, Travis. I hope your wife doesn't need to go into the city. Maybe it's better that you have running the farm to keep your mind busy.

I read that Virginia was sending a medical ship up to NY. As of yesterday, we had 152 cases in our state so not even close to the 10,000+ in NY. I'm sure we will see more before it starts getting better.

message 92: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Oh Travis. I'm not sure what to say. I hope the ship isn't required and that your wife doesn't have to go. But understand why your wife would want to volunteer. Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I'm glad that your wide is staying, Travis. That's scary! I worry about our family and friends on the front lines.

1. My Sister-The RN, is in ER at a major hospital in Honolulu.

2. My friend's daughter has received notice that she will be called back to ICU at a moment's notice. Currently, she is working as liaison between the old and new hospitals. The new hospital is not open yet, but there is talk that they may utilize it for extra beds if needed.

Go ahead and add your people to the list so that we can all keep them close in our hearts, and send them light, energy, and prayers to keep them safe.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Actually my wife is a physical therapist and my sister is a counselor for the same hospital. It doesn't matter if you are a hospital employee you will be given a jobwhether it's cleaning or getting food whatever. Everyone will have an assignment dealing with this crisis

I'm adding this as an interesting fact because people think of doctors and nurses but no one on staff will be exempt from the front lines

We still can leave the house. The restaurants, bars are open to take out only. The tattoo parlors, salons, hair, anything cosmetic is closed until 4/13.

I wonder when we will get the shelter in place order that Illinois has.
