Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My uncle has it but it's only like having a mild flu. Unfortunately he is an accountant and thsi hit in the middle of tax season so one can only guess how much interaction he had before getting tested

On facemasks. You don't need N95. They only need to be able to prevent spit basically from passing. Everyone is sewing masks up now
CDC recommendation is flannel against your skin and cloth on outside . My wife prefers 4 straps so she can tie it around her neck to hang and then tie around her head when she wants it in use
Many people are seeing rectangular masks with a loop on each end. Usually elastic. Then it covers your mouth and nose and the loops go around each ear to hold it

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain, Rusalka. This is something we haven't experienced before, at least not on this scale, and it will take time for governments to work through the options. Just have to trust that they will have the gumption to make hard decisions. That, and keeping ourselves safe. It makes me sad to hear comments from our friends on YLTO who are suffering so much.

So good to hear you are able to find joy in baking, even if you are passing "corona" to your friend. That made me laugh.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I feel you with the asthma Sarah. I don't have asthma but I do have farmers lung a little. A cold, also a coronavirus by the way, goes straight into my chest I can only imagine if I catch this. And last year my daily inhaler which I'm supposed to use twice a day went from about $30 for 2 month supply to over $300. They gave me some one year coupon to get a reduced price. Last month or 2 months ago went to refill the inhaler and it is now $350. O wasn't paying it so I haven't used my inhaler for a while now. I've been doing quite well but we've also implemented many things to cut down on dust in the 8 years since I first got the inhaler. But I'm a little scared of covid 19. That stopping of my inhaler business could bite me in the ass. I hope not. Anything strenuous would make me wheeze even with the inhaler. I'm being pretty careful myself to stay away from everyone

message 305: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Side note. In past 8 years doctor has told me I have farmers lung, emphysema, copd and asthma. Tbh I don't know what the official ruling is

message 306: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Wow those prices are steep for inhalers Travis! I'm so pleased I don't have to pay that kind of money otherwise I'd have to go without them too. I pay £10 a month for a pre-payment card. It allows me unlimited prescriptions. Works out well for me as I have 3-4 prescriptions per month and each would be around £9 if I paid individually.

Rob's company has started furloughing their staff. Unfortunately, Rob started after the cutoff date and so cannot be furloughed. So now he has to go in to work more to do the 'essential work' so that he keeps getting paid. And they'll be more staff in than there has been of late due to there being others who fall between the gaps of the government regulations. Trying not to get annoyed. It's not his employer's fault. And there's no changing it. But I don't like that he'll be out more. Of course, that might all change as there was a big Covid19 meeting today about lockdown so who knows what will happen.

message 307: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I'm frustrated today. I need to pick up my prescriptions from Costco. Right now, they only let 50 people into the store at a time and there are long lengthy lineups. I can't stand for any length of time because of my arthritis.

When I called the pharmacy, I learned that my doctor only prescribed 1 month for each prescription. Apparently, the government is restricting prescriptions to 1 month. Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose? Aren't we supposed to be staying at home and staying out of the stores? Does this new policy support that? I could have picked up 6 months today and not been back in the store. Alberta isn't supposed to peak until mid-May, which means I'll need to repeat this process during the peak of the virus.

Costco isn't offering curbside pickup, in fact the person I talked to didn't even know what that was. Seriously?? They suggested a local pick up and delivery company. When I called them, they said they don't do pickups at Costco because it's too long of a wait in the lineups.

The girl said that I can bypass the line by going to the exit and telling them that I need the pharmacy and they will escort me in. I guess I'll try that, and if that doesn't work, I'll be in the lineup. In pain.

Jayme | 4493 comments Janice that is ridiculous. I don't think companies have thought through some of their policies/decisions. My drugstore wants people to do the drive thru pick-up. Just what I want to do is to talk into that little phone that 300 other people have used. I'm good for about 6 weeks with prescriptions, but will run out by June 10th our quarantine freedom date.

I shouldn't really complain about that date. I read a news article this morning in the AP about our governor (Northam/Virginia). He is the only governor in the states who is a doctor, so when things started to look dicey he was one of the first to close schools and has ordered the longest state stay-put order. They believe that because schools closed so early it may have contributed to our lower numbers. He was also ordering medical supplies earlier than most. Because of this we are actually doing ok as a state and have flattened the curve to help the hospitals. We still have thousands with the virus, but it is actually lower than other states per capita.

Now off to My Zoom Thirsty Thursday Happy Hour. Be Well everyone.

message 309: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Janice, that's awful.

I feel like some of the policies they've put in place make it more difficult to follow the guidelines. For example, my regular grocery store is constantly empty of several products. They have instilled a policy where you can only buy two of many items in order to combat the hoarding and empty shelves. Unfortunately, if you can only buy two of some things and can't find any of others, you would end up going to the grocery store more frequently than normal instead of less. I also don't understand how the shelves are still so empty if they are limiting people on how much they can buy. Where is it all going?

I ended up having to do my shopping two days in a row and going to a different store the second day. I was able to get what I needed there, so I'll be going there first next time and hopefully will only need to make one trip.

message 310: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments It didn't turn out as bad as I feared. I went to the exit door and there were signs up saying that it was the entrance for pharmacy. I went straight to pharmacy and got my prescriptions.

I'm so glad I didn't have to stand in the lineup. I'm sure people must have been there for over an hour.

Masks are slow catching on here. I only saw one person in the store wearing one. I thought there would be more.

message 311: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Glad it went well, Janice. I’m starting to see more masks, but there are still more people without. I’m surprised by how many workers don’t wear them and also aren’t practicing social distancing. I think if you work in a grocery store or customer service, etc, it makes sense to take precautions when you are potentially exposed all day.

message 312: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments I noticed the same thing, Kristie. Last week my husband and I went to Walmart and Home Depot. None of the workers were using mask. We did use them but it should be better if they also used them. It is strange. I also saw our mailman using mask only one day last week, and never again.

message 313: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I got some face masks in the mail today. Not sure if they were made by mother in law alone or is she helped the kids see them up. It's spider web designs

message 314: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I think the biggest problems is there are so many conspiracy theories people don't know what to believe. Most people either don't know anyone who's been sick or have only had a mild case. If you go back a month ago I was of the opinion that this was being used to cover up the impending stock market crash. It's unnatural for an economy to just go up. It needs corrections. You want the line graph to be more of a wave. It was just going up and anytime it tried to correct itself the govt stepped in to manipulate the market.

Ok enough with that.

Basically I'm not convinced there's more at play here and the situation isn't being used to cover up other things. For instance look at how many issues people were bickering over before now you've probably forgotten a lot of the things that were making headlines.

At the same time people are getting sick. I know people who have been sick. People are dying.

I'm of the belief that of all the govt the CDC is the most trustworthy. Idk why I just feel that way. I feel like CDC recommendations need to be taken serious.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't believe the pandemic is a hoax but I also don't believe to a certain extent we are being manipulated. The question is for what purpose what would the end game be for it all? I most certainly don't know. So for now we take the social distancing very serious and follow the recommendation. You're gonna look pretty stupid if you've been on some full blown conspiracy theory and been completely careless and next week you're in need of a ventilator to find out they don't have one for you.

At the same time I've read books and when it comes to a coronavirus outbreak I mean this is it from the sickness right through to the actions being taken. There's no reason not to believe it. With global travel and people and packages shipped all over the world in hours and days honestly it's amazing we don't have more widespread pandemics more frequently

message 315: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I hope I don't come across wrong here but I think we as a people needed this to happen. We could have much more devastating pandemics. We are seeing all the trouble and the flaws in the system and hopefully will be able to learn and move forward with better preparedness for a possible next time. And life is so fast paced everyone needed to be forced to stop and take a look around.

And by no means am I saying anyone deserves to be sick or die. I don't wish that on anyone at all. I guess that's just trying to find some positives from the situation.

message 316: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I know what I'm attempting to say. Let's not let the deaths be for nothing. Let them teach us so we can grow and be more knowledgeable. For people to die and we learn nothing from it then it's all just a huge waste

message 317: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Apr 10, 2020 05:21AM) (new)

Jayme | 4493 comments Some of the conspiracy theories are just plain nutty. My mom thinks that this was started to rid the U.S. of its elderly population so they won't have to pay so much in Social Security and medicare. My mom is one of the smartest people I know and the idea that she thinks this is baffling. When I ask her where she's hearing this. She just says that this is what her friends are all talking about. It's very frustrating.

Question: Is anybody wearing a mask when they go for walks in their neighborhood?

message 321: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments For now my favorite conspiracy theory is Epstein didn't kill himself in jail. He's actually alive and testifying on all sorts of high power people so they made up the virus to cover up investigating a lot of high profile people

What's funny is when it first started I said the Russians were to blame. After all they're to blame for everything these days right. I was reading a book about pandemics and I can't remember what it was now but there was a virus let loose years ago by a disgruntled Russian scientist. Russia was experimenting on building a super virus to use in warfare. They aren't the only ones several countries do the same. Anyway a scientist mad that his co-workers didn't give him enough credit got mad and contaminated some people for revenge.

The CDC was able to contain it before it got out of hand. Also the disgruntled scientist thing has happened a few times in the past but CDC has handled it quickly

Oh the anthrax in the early 2000's was believed to be a disgruntled scientist. The court never finished the trial on him because he committed suicide before it was over. Which many feel was an act based on guilt and fear he was going to be seen guilty.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My prediction is if we get things manageable. The media and politicians will spend months fighting over
You over reacted and destroyed the economy the numbers were no where near what you said sick and deaths would be

The other side will say yeah because of isolation and all the steps we implemented we prevented this from being so bad

I side with the 2nd side only because I have a whole regimine for every cow that freshens. People ask why do you spend all that money when you don't have problems with fresh cows . Um. I hope my act of prevention is why I don't have problems.

It's the old chicken or the egg arguments l

I watched the head of W.H.O. discuss the "over-reaction" thing. He said that it will seem like we are over-reacting. If we do this right, we will think we over-reacted when it's over. If we didn't do it right, we will think we didn't do enough.

How is it that any credible organization or witness these days is vilified so badly by the opposing side that they are no longer deemed credible? It doesn't matter what argument you put out, it's torn down by, "They aren't a credible source."

message 328: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Not being credible. That ties in to my wanting to know how the govt is manipulating the situation. And it will be. And it starts by taking away someone's credibility then they are able to twist facts just a little.

I know this is or will happen. For what purpose or what end I have no idea. But we constantly see the experts called in and then the other side brings someone in to knock them down and then sides are made and the people are divided and ultimately that's what the powers that be need is for us to have division. They can't control us if we all United and that scares them

My "craft" group had a zoom last night, and after a few people i don't know very well left, Lexx jumped in as did my brother's interjections through his fiance's mic and a couple of other partners. LOL you'll have to upload it somewhere for us to access a link. Depending on your privacy settings on FB, you could just link us that. If you have good privacy settings, you can just make that post public and not your profile, and link the link. If you would like to keep your personal private facebook personal and private, you'll have to upload it to something like YouTube or Vine and link us that link I am afraid.
