On the positive note, Dom and I just had our Zoom call and she is doing well. :)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Those numbers can suddenly start increasing like crazy.

Today, again thousands and thousands of people went to beaches (parking lots and roads had to be closed so that people had no choice but turn around) and into nature. There was a call for people to stop coming to parks, forests etc. Also, we have this national mobile phone alarm system which is rarely used, only when a disaster happens (like a hugefire which brings toxics in the air and you have to stay inside). It was used this morning to warn people to keep distance. Not to much effect, it seems.

Tomorrow the goverment will discuss whether new measures are needed. I expect it will be a yes. I like the new rules in Germany. No restrictions to going outside, but with no more than 2 people and keep distance, otherwise you'll get a fine.

That is seriously unfair Sarah. Everyoue who is unable to work due to virus shuld be treated the same. It is grossly unfair over here too with government employee getting full pay and privit sector workers getting and self employed getting 230 euro per week, but at least that is livable on. Banks are giving people a mortgage holiday too.

Kristie | 19123 comments My younger daughter's company is finally closing down tomorrow. I'm so relieved. They are just customer support, so there is really no reason for them to still be going. She is a little disappointed because she can't work from home, but it is definitely best for her. She has an immune disorder and is sharing phones! I was so worried about her. She is still not in the best situation since she has several roommates, but at least she's not additionally exposed to a group of people at work now.

Margo | 11628 comments When we think of front line workers don't forget to include shop employees, garage staff, couriers, HGV drivers and the like. We wouldn't last too long without them.

Here most people are obaying the rules but like all of you are reporting, crowds flocked to to beaches and parks at weekend! In our shops I see shoppers keeping to the rules but staff kept brushing past me. I got pretty mad but didn't say anything.

At the moment our new cases nos aren't changing much so it's looking the Irish gov statagy is working - fingers crossed that todays numbers will be the same. We have 4 deaths in a population of 5 million.

On a personal level, my biggest concern is that my psoriasis tablet is currently unavailable. It's not controlling my condition perfectly but it's a hell of a lot better than it was. I dread being without it. I suppose that the stock out is related to the virus situation. I must check where it is made

Kristie | 19123 comments I'm so appreciative of delivery people right now! I've ordered things to keep us entertained and my daughter's medicine to be delivered. So glad they are still available. Amazon is my friend right now for sure.

Our numbers are still rising every day. I think we've got a way to go here.

Sarah | 18549 comments Sounds like we're in the exact same situation as you Peggy - people not following guidelines so government considering bringing in stricter instructions. It's definitely needed. Things are escalating a lot here. Yesterday an 18 year old died. I saw a healthy 36 year old nurse was in ICU here today. Scary stuff.

I uninstalled facebook on my phone as I need to reduce my social media usage. I'm just going to watch the press conferences each day and look at the stats published on cases/deaths.

Kristie | 19123 comments My daughter's company is trying to find a loophole to keep their business open! I'm so frustrated. They're trying to ignore the governor's orders and require her to go in. Now she's dealing with this too. What is wrong with people?!

message 115: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments The prime minister was obviously very annoyed by the behavior of people over the weekend, and he announced new measures that are the direct result of people not sticking to the rules. I hope they feel guilty..

All events and gatherings are now forbidden, even with less than 100 people. The max is 3 people, and then you still need to keep 1.5m distance. This is in effect until June 1 (!). Decisions about schools will be made in the beginning of April, but I don't see how they can have this policy on the one hand, but still open schools.

Shops are also going to have to implement some kind of policy at the door to ensure safety of staff and customers. It wasn't explained any further, but it sounds like I'll be standing in line for the supermarket from now on too.

Individuals can be fined €400 if they are in groups of more than 3. Companies can be fined €4000 if they don't implement the door policy.

You can still have a max of 3 people over to your home as long as you can keep 1.5m distance from each other. I guess this just needs people being good and listen, as obviously they can't go fine people inside their houses.

Also, if you go to a shop, you have to go by yourself. You can't do your grocery shopping with your partner or with the whole family.

Wow, June 1. Will I be working from home, basically locked up in the house for 2.5 months, only going out for a walk or to stand in line before I can enter a supermarket? There are several fun things I had planned in May that I need to cancel now.

They said part of the reason for choosing June 1 and not May 1, is to also create some calm. A lot of event organizers are wondering if they should go on with planning and bookings and preparation, and with this date it's clear that in the near future, no events will be taking place.

I know this has been going on, but April 6 seemed manageable. I need some time to take in the date of June 1.

People always try to find loopholes to escape the rules. But even companies doing that.. they should be setting examples for their employees!

I'm sure that even with our new rules, which are not a complete lockdown as you can still go outside when you wish without explaining yourself, people will still manage to find loopholes which they will also understand are not what the measures intend to do, but they'll do so anyway. It's just so antisocial and egocentric and childish.

message 117: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Yes, they are claiming that because there is a doctor's office in the building they use that the building has to stay open, so their employees can still come in to work. It's ridiculous. Medical people are allowed to stay open, but they have nothing to do with the medical group there. They just rent spaces in the same building. It's awful. She's afraid of losing her job if she says she's staying home. And I guess the computers they are sending home with people have to be plugged in to the router; they are not wireless. Since she has several roommates, she can't do that. Ugh...

Kristie | 19123 comments They just changed the rules in our area again. I have to look it up to see exactly what is new. I know the schools are now closed through the end of the school year.

message 119: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments I wish they could finally tell us here that everything is paused for the next two months. It would help people to understand better the seriousness of this. We all know at this point 2 weeks won't be enough. They keep moving the resume life date a week at a time, and it is obvious none of this will be over by early April. Our area only had the first case 3 days ago. We are far from the end of this.

message 120: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments I find that so frustrating. It is difficult to know what to do. All our decisions are in limbo waiting to hear what's going to happen.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Kristie, I'm kind of following what is being decided in the countries that are in the worst situation and assuming the same is going to be done here. Italy and Spain added another 2 weeks to their quarantines, making it a month total so far. We started earlier so we might need even more time.

Kristie | 19123 comments We are still waiting to hear if our grandson's school will remain closed longer. I'm almost certain they will, but they haven't made that announcement yet. So far, they are only scheduled to be closed for this week and next. I'm hoping they make the announcement sooner rather than later. We are supposed to go get him if they close longer, but the longer we wait for the announcement, the more difficult it gets to get up there.

True, and it lets people know where they stand. I think it's good. But still, I need to process. That's ALL of April, and ALL of May. It's quite massive, and so unlike the things we're used to.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments On a brighter note, we survived today our first remote learning day. It was kind of stressing for me to have to control all of them, but we'll sure get better in the following days. It's amazing what the teachers have done in the last few days. I am so thankful for they hard work. I'm going to email all of them today to let them know. I am already thinking about something special for them at the end of the year.

I have no issues on Instagram and Twitter can have it's moments but you can easily mute or unfollow on Twitter. I frequently have to mute Stephen Kings when he gets up on his politics soapbox. I think I I followed him his antitrump rhetoric was just too much. Like 10 frikkin tweets a day

Sarah | 18549 comments It's so frustrating when people think they are above the laws. A few pubs and restaurants were open over the weekend even though they were supposed to close at the end of Friday.

Over 70s and those were medical conditions (like me) have been told to self isolate for 12 weeks. That takes us to mid June!!!!

People. Do you really want the police or military brought in. Just do what your told already

message 131: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments I completely agree, Sarah!

I don't know what the schools are doing in my area because I don't have any school-aged children anymore. I do know that they are now out for the remainder of the school year.

My grandson's school has a big list of things they are supposed to get done. My daughter contacted his teacher to ask about the workload because she is still working and how is he supposed to work online when he is with his father who is working from home to be with him? She was really concerned that he might not get it all done without having a parent that is able to help full time since his school had a schedule planned from 9-5 each day. His teacher really put her mind at ease by saying that they just want kids to do their best and get done as much as they can. They understand that not everyone is in the best situation for real homeschooling. I think it's great that the teachers have put together plans for the kids to work on and are available to them if they are needed, but understand that the plan they put out is a best case scenario. This is really a situation where they're all doing the best they can.

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments My housekeeper cleaned today but not before checking with me to make sure I was self-isolating, and reassuring me about herself. When she got here, I was telling her about my "friend" who has stopped her quarantine and is galivanting around like there are no consequences. I didn't give her any names.

I went back to work when it dawned on me that she cleans the house where said friend lives and felt that I needed to warn her. She hadn't been informed that the house was under quarantine. Fortunately, she wasn't scheduled to clean until this coming Thursday. However, she did drop off a vacuum cleaner at the house and was invited in to put it away and nobody said the house was under quarantine. She is understandably upset.

Could Charles Dickens create a new ghost? One called "Ghost of Covid-19 Future" so people could see the results of their actions if they don't change their ways?

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments NYS had 10,000 Saturday, 15000 Sunday 21000 cases today total. We certainly are consistent I guess there's 16,000 samples a day bring tested. So as I've been noticing about 25% of tests are positive. If we could figure out how to identify the 75% negative just think how much more efficient it would be.

Sarah | 18549 comments We're in lockdown. PM just addressed the nation. Cannot go to other people's houses or socialise with friends and family outside our own household. Only leave home for food and medicine or to go to work if essential. And to do those things as less as possible. Only maximum of 2 people in a gathering and they have to be 2 metres apart. We can exercise outside once per day by ourself or other members of our household. All shops are closed other than supermarkets and pharmacies. Police have powers to disperse groups and fine people if breaking lockdown. All weddings and baptisms are cancelled. And some other stuff I've probably forgotten. 3 weeks lockdown as is, although stronger rules may be implemented still, and things will be reassessed at 3 weeks. I was expecting it but wow!

message 139: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments So, about 2 weeks ago Rob suddenly lost all his sense of smell and taste. Totally gone. He even called the GP after a week, and that's saying something. Since a few days, there are more and more news items popping up about people carrying the virus who show no symptoms, except complete and sudden loss of smell and taste.

It might as well be something else with Rob, but it is coincidental. It would make him very early case, when all cases could still be linked to visits to risky areas.

Some googling revealed that Dutch experts are aware of this symptom being discovered, but they are still reading the studies and weighing the evidence so they haven't included it in their list of symptoms yet.

It did indeed! I feel much better about it now although I'm still freaking out about the prospect of getting it.

Yes the new symptoms have been discussed in the UK too but they are playing them down and maintaining that new continuous cough and high temperature is what people should look out for. I hope Rob doesn't have it Peggy! If he had it 2 weeks ago, if it was that, surely you'd have become symptomatic by now?

That was what the UKs original plan was, then they realised just how many people would die. And since then, they've taken much stronger action. They cannot guarantee who will be mildly sick - so many people recently have ended up in ICU who are normally healthy and under 60 too.

message 147: by Travis (new)
