And so I discover a book that will become a favourite - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer. I absolutely loved this book - not my usual genre but a real delight, beautifully written and so atmospheric - just adored it.So book number 12/26 read :)
Just completed my "D" selection - Catch of the Day by Kristan Higgins. Sweet story with good romance. As always, the characters are interesting and have depth, and I enjoyed the little Maine town the author created. Definitely worth reading. 4 stars19/26

Updated message 149 with Z: World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks.25/26
Ummm, I'd say I liked it a lot, though it's entirely possible that I wouldn't if I'd read it again (which I don't really plan to do in any case) (and that's largely because I've heard someone express that somewhere else on the internet and I'm extremely susceptible to people's opinions sometimes no matter the type). Basically, I found it very interesting, intriguing, and straight up insightful, and it was quite well written, although I will accept that some of the characterisation / general narration was deficient and that if Brooks had written it as a nested short story anthology and dispensed with his (admittedly really solid) framing conceit he could have avoided that. Then again it's entirely possible that I'm completely wrong about all of this and that in some way I might actually be a terrible person for liking this. Sorry, extreme susceptibility + general insecurity = nonsense, pretty much. See, this is why I never write reviews. At least it's *one* reason why. (I've also never been much of a horror/etc. person, so there's that against me too.)
So on balance I'd give it a 4.5/5 down to **** for the deficiencies I mentioned. I'm fairly sure I'd recommend it. :)
EDIT: Fairly late, but I'd been meaning to say this and forgotten it - I loved that the viewpoints were so spread out and diverse. Really gave a good sense of just how Worldwide the War got to be.
Thanks Paul for sharing your review. I've been curious about that one. Sometimes my opinions of books change after I read them or if I re-read them. Sometimes we're just in a different place later on. I don't think that makes your initial impressions any less valid.
