This will be a team reading challenge which will run from March 1st 2020 to March 31st 2020. Results will be announced on April 1st 2020.

To complete this challenge, participants will be split into teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy-read your book. You can also earn some bonus points by reading books published in different years.

You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant ☺

How it works:

Keep finding yourself reading shiny new books and never finding time to read those ones you've had for ages? Then this is the challenge for you ☺

To earn points in this challenge, simply read and review as normal, but if you would like to earn your team some bonus points, then the idea behind this challenge is to read books from different years, and check them off (a bit like Bingo).

This is what your board will look like -

________________________________________________________
| .≤1929.. | ..30-59. | ..60-79. | ..80-85. | .86-90.. |
| ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... |
________________________________________________________
| .91-92.. | .93-94.. | .95-96.. | .97-98.. | .99-00.. |
| ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... |
_______________________________________________________
| .01-02.. | .03-04.. | .05-06.. | .07-08.. | .09-10.. |
| ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... |
_______________________________________________________
| ..2011.. | ..2012.. | ..2013.. | ..2014.. | ..2015.. |
| ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... |
_______________________________________________________
| ..2016.. | ..2017.. | ..2018.. | ..2019.. | ..2020.. |
| ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... |
_______________________________________________________

- Each square has a date, or dates which can be used to complete that square.
- Each time you or someone on your team reads a book, the year it has been published will receive a +1 on your grid.
- Each time your team reads a book for each category in a vertical or horizontal line, your team will receive 25 bonus points.
- Each time your team completes the whole grid, your team will receive a further 250 bonus points.
- Some of these boxes cover multiple years, but 1 book from any of those years will receive a 1. (So, for example, the third box at the top says 1960+, so this box can be completed with a book published between January 1st 1960, and December 31st 1979 - as the next box is 1980-1985.).
- The first box which says '≤1929' which means that any book published before January 1st 1930 can be used to complete that square.
- These boxes can be completed in any order, and it is fine to complete boxes multiple times before completing other boxes(So you could read 3 books from 2001, even if you have not completed any other boxes).
- You may also use the publication date of any edition of a book, you don't have to use the original publication date.

Important:
* You may only claim one year per book (unless multiple people are reading it in which case they can each use the book to complete a box).
* Each time a box is completed, the person completing it will receive bonus points, the number of bonus points will be equal to the number of page points they have earned for that book.
* Each time a line or the whole grid is completed, bonus points will be awarded to the team rather than to individuals, so solo players will not receive these bonus points.
* The year claimed may be for any edition of that book. So a book originally published in 2007, and republished in 2009 could be used for 2007 OR 2009.

* * You may read any kind of book for this challenge, but the page counts necessary to claim 1 book read for a year are the following -
- YA, NA, Adult, Non-fiction books (without illustrations) - 200 pages.
- Middle-grade/children's books (without illustrations) - 300 pages.
- Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, books written in verse, anything with some illustrations - 600 pages.
- Books which are mainly illustrations cannot be used.
* You may add together page counts to reach these minimums, but you can only add together page counts of books which are under the limits, ie: less than 200, 300, and 600 pages respectively. You cannot add together page counts of books which meet the minimum page count on their own.
* If you do choose to add together the page counts of multiple books to reach the minimum page count, you may only choose one year, you wouldn't be able to claim more than one year. So if you read one book with 119 pages, and a second with 113 pages, each with a different year, you could add these together to get to the minimum page count, and then choose one year from one of those books to be your bonus year.
* Books started before March can be used for page points +/- buddy read points, but you will not be able to claim any years or bonus points.

Example -

On Team Wood, the following books have been read -
Mandy - The Host = 2008
Louisa - Twilight = 2006
Fred - The Hunger Games = 2009
Dana - The Giver = 2006
Terri - The Golden Compass = 2001
Mo - Looking for Alaska = 2005
Mo - Eragon = 2003

This will appear on their board like this -
________________________________________________________
| .≤1929.. | ..30-59. | ..60-79. | ..80-85. | .86-90.. |
| ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... |
________________________________________________________
| .91-92.. | .93-94.. | .95-96.. | .97-98.. | .99-00.. |
| ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... |
_______________________________________________________
| .01-02.. | .03-04.. | .05-06.. | .07-08.. | .09-10.. |
| ...01... | ...01... | ...03... | ...01... | ...01... |

_______________________________________________________
| ..2011.. | ..2012.. | ..2013.. | ..2014.. | ..2015.. |
| ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... |
_______________________________________________________
| ..2016.. | ..2017.. | ..2018.. | ..2019.. | ..2020.. |
| ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... | ...00... |
_______________________________________________________

This will earn them the normal page points etc. plus another 25 bonus points for completing a row ☺

Rules/Guidelines:

* Books must be read between the 1st of March and the 31st of March inclusive. Books started before March may be used, but you will only earn points for pages read in March, and will not be able to claim any bonus points. Please let us know how many pages you have read in March when posting your review.

* Books must be at least 50 pages long, without illustrations/photographs/diagrams etc.
-- 75 pages minimum for middle-grade and children's books.
-- 150 pages minimum for poetry, books written in verse, manga/graphic novels, books which have some illustrations, and plays.
-- Books which are mainly illustrations, such as some children's books, picture books, and some non-fiction books etc. cannot be used as part of this challenge.
**Please note that these are the minimum page counts for page points, not for the number of books read, or for earning any bonus points.**

* Middle-grade, and children's books without illustrations/photographs will earn 1 point for every 75 pages due to the reduced word count. This applies to all books which are tagged 'middle-grade' or 'children's' more times than they are tagged YA. This includes Goosebumps books, The Wind in the Willows, the Magisterium series, and The Secret Garden to name a few.
**Please note that these are the minimum page counts for page points, not for the number of books read, or for earning any bonus points.**

* Books which are illustrated or have photographs will receive 1 point for every 150 pages. If your book has an illustrator listed or is tagged 'illustrated', then it will fall into this category. This includes books such as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Spiderwick Chronicles, A Series of Unfortunate Events, books by Roald Dahl, Doll Bones, Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children Series, A Monster Calls, The Little Prince, and Charlotte's Web to name a few.

* A list of editions of some of these books, which we consider not to be illustrated can be found on our challenge rules thread here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... These are the only editions of these listed books which can be used to earn points as a book rather than an illustrated book.

* A list of books which have a modified page count to account for illustrations, which can then be used as a regular book can also be found here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

* Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse will receive 1 point for every 150 pages due to reduced word count. If your book is tagged 'Sequential Art', 'Graphic Novels', 'Comics', 'Manga', 'Poetry', 'Verse', 'Play', or words to that effect, then it will fall into this category.

* If your poetry book or graphic novel does not meet the minimum page count, we will allow you to add together the page counts of 2 or more books to make it to the minimum page count. Books must be posted at the same time, and must be less than 150 pages each.
(This applies to meeting the page count requirement, not meeting any other requirements.)

* If you are reading novellas which are less than 50 pages long, you may also add together the page counts of one or more novellas of less than 50 pages, to get to the minimum page count of 50 pages. Books must be posted at the same time.
(This applies to meeting the page count requirement, not meeting any other requirements.)

* You are welcome to read physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks for this challenge, and you are also welcome to read in any language as long as you provide us with an English translation of your review/updates either as part of your review, on your team's review thread, or by personal message to myself.

* If for any reason you are unable to publish your review on Goodreads, it can also be sent to myself via personal message. Please continue to post on your team's review thread as normal, stating 'review sent to Sarah by personal message' after 'Review:'.

* Re-reads are allowed in this challenge, as long as it has been at least 8 months since you last read the book. You will need to write a new review or updates though please. We recommend that you post on your review '2020 re-read', or something to that effect so that we can easily see what your new review is.

*A review or 4 detailed updates will be required for each book read.

*Buddy reads must have a minimum of 4 comments to count, and comments must be detailed, and about the book. We also expect you to discuss the book with your buddies, not just post updates and leave. Comments must also be different from your review or status updates. If your buddy read comments, and your review or status updates are identical, then you will not receive points for both until they contain different details.

* Buddy reads must take place within this group (YA Buddy Readers' Corner ♥) to gain the extra points. You can see which buddy reads are already planned each month here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

* You should not start a buddy read more than 7 days before the start date, or more than 14 days after the start date, or the last comment on the thread, whichever is later. If you do need to change the date, check with your buddy as they may also be able to start early/late with you.

* Group Buddy Reads can be joined to earn buddy read points, but only GBRs for March 2020 will count. These will be posted on this thread around February 22nd - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

* Please note that we are no longer using 'Series' threads in our challenges. If you choose to take part in a buddy read on a series thread rather than a thread for an individual book, then you will not earn any buddy read points for it.

* Please post the link to your buddy read along with the book you are reading and the start date on the 'Planned Buddy Reads' list for the correct month - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... If you continually schedule buddy reads and fail to post them on the planned buddy reads thread for the correct month, then we won't continue to give buddy read points. It is important that buddy reads are posted on the planned buddy reads list so that everyone is given the opportunity to join.

* There are no set books which need to be read, any book which fits within the rules will count, so books can be chosen by the reader. Please check with us before reading if you are unsure whether your book counts or not.

* Bonus points will be given as detailed in the 'points' section below.

* Please only post one review per comment on your team's review thread, unless you are adding the books together to reach a minimum page count.

* This challenge will begin and end on Goodreads time, which is Pacific Standard Time - https://greenwichmeantime.com/time-zo... The challenge will start at 00:01 on March 1st 2020 PST, and end at 00:01 on April 1st 2020 PST.

* You are welcome to start the challenge on the 1st of the month in your own time zone, but you must also finish the challenge on your own time zone. Please let us know if you are doing this, as Goodreads may time stamp your books as being started on the last day of the previous month.

* Whilst you may start on your own timezone, the challenge will still end on Goodreads time, so even if you start late, you cannot end late.

* Higher page count editions may be used when claiming points for pages, but page counts for iphone/ibook/ipod/itunes editions will not be accepted, and neither will page counts for audiobook editions of any kind, or miniature versions of books such as Flipback, dwarsligger, PenguinMini (you are still welcome to read in these formats, but must use a different page count). We will also not accept a page count which is more than double the next highest for that book. (ie: if there are 4 editions at 200 pages, and 1 edition at 2200 pages, we would not accept the 2200 page edition as it is more than double the next highest at 200 pages.)

* We request that you leave us a link to the edition with the page count that you are using if the book has multiple editions with different page counts.

* Please do not go back and alter posts once they have been counted, if you need to make a change, please make a new post on your team's review thread, with a link to your original post, and then explain the change, for example; a higher page count edition has been found, or a buddy read needs to be added, and please include links.

* We do reserve the right to not add additional points on when posts have been amended, as it may be unclear how many points were awarded the first time.

* We will be tracking the number of books that people are reading, to see whether they are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that they are on. If over a period of several months you are consistently reading less than the required number of books, we will ask you to move to a lower level of team, or go solo. This is because it is unfair to other team members if you continue to sign up for a medium/serious team, yet are only reading 2 books a month.

* Our regular challenge rules can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

*** If you are not sure if your book counts, please ask before you read it. Questions can be posted on this thread, or sent by personal message to myself.***

Points :

Books - *1 point per 50 pages*

*50 - 99 pages = 1 points
*100 - 149 pages = 2 point
*150 - 199 pages = 3 points
*200 - 249 pages = 4 points
*250 - 299 pages = 5 points
*300 - 349 pages = 6 points
*350 - 399 pages = 7 points
*400 - 449 pages = 8 points
*450 - 499 pages = 9 points
*500 - 549 pages = 10 points
*550 - 599 pages = 11 points
*600+ pages = 12 points
(Maximum of 12 points per book)
(Please note that this is the minimum page count for page points, not the minimum page count for claiming bonus points.)

Middle-grade/children's books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 75 pages*

*75 - 149 pages = 1 points
*150 - 224 pages = 2 point
*225 - 299 pages = 3 points
*300 - 374 pages = 4 points
*375 - 449 pages = 5 points
*450 - 524 pages = 6 points
*525 - 599 pages = 7 points
*600+ pages = 8 points
(maximum of 8 points per book)
(Please note that this is the minimum page count for page points, not the minimum page count for claiming bonus points.)

Graphic novels/manga/poetry/plays/books written in verse/books which have some illustrations - *1 point per 150 pages*

*150 - 299 pages = 1 points
*300 - 449 pages = 2 point
*450 - 599 pages = 3 points
*600+ pages = 4 points
(maximum of 4 points per book)
(Please note that this is the minimum page count for page points, not the minimum page count for claiming bonus points.)

* Buddy reads DOUBLE your points score for pages, so a 300-page book (6pts) + buddy read (6pts) = 12 points. 600-page book (12pts) + buddy read (12pts) = 24 points. (Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in our group.)

★ ★ ★ Please note that while you may add together page counts to get to the minimum necessary for the 'books read' column, books which meet the minimum page counts will still be scored individually. This means that if you submit 3 novellas of 70 pages to reach the 200-page minimum, you will receive 1 point for each of these novellas, as each book is individually long enough to earn bonus points. This applies to all types of points.★ ★ ★

Bonus Points -

* Bonus points will be awarded based on page count, the same as page points and buddy read points. So if you read a 300 page book and are awarded 6 points, you will earn an extra 6 points for claiming a letter. Similarly, if you read a 300 page middle-grade book, you will receive 4 page points, and a further 4 bonus points for claiming a letter. The same maximums apply as apply for page points.
* Each time a horizontal or vertical line is completed, your team will receive 25 bonus points.
* Each time the full grid is completed, your team will receive a further 250 bonus points.

- Bonus points for completing lines and the whole grid are awarded to team totals only, so solo players will not be able to claim these points.

*Mods will keep track of each teams points, using the following system -

Team Name:

__________|_Books_|_Buddy_|__Page____|_Bonus_|__Total
__________|_Read__|_Reads_|__Points__|_Points|

Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0

Please note - we will be tracking how many books you have read, but you will not receive points for this column. This is to allow us to see whether you are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that you have requested to be on. You will receive a '1' for every YA/NA/Adult/non-fiction book (without illustrations) over 100 pages long, for every middle-grade or children's book (without illustrations) over 150 pages long, or for every 300 pages of graphic novels, poetry, plays, novels written in verse, and book with some illustrations etc, that you have read. If you consistently ask to be on a Serious or Medium team without reading the minimum number of books, you may be asked to drop down to a lower level team.

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90928 comments Mod

This challenge will be a team challenge. When signing up please let us know if you want to join a 'Serious' team (reading 12 books or more each), a 'Medium' team (reading 8-12 books each) or a 'Just for fun' team (reading any number of books each).

***Please only sign up for a 'Serious' or 'Medium' team if you are able to read the minimum number of books for that level of team, so 3 books a week for Serious, and 2 books a week for Medium.

This means that in 2019 someone in Serious would have read at least 144 books, and someone in Medium would have read between 96 and 144 books.***

You may also sign up as a solo participant, and will compete against your other solo competitors, as well as those people in teams. An individual leaderboard will be published at the end of the challenge.

Teams should be posted by February 22nd/23rd at the latest. If you wish to join a 'Serious' or 'Medium' team, please sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. You may join as a solo player, or join a fun team (where possible) at any time.

Thank you! ☺

Q - The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson is sold as two physical volumes (Part 1 and Part 2) and the book is listed as both one book and two separate books on Goodreads. Could I just confirm if I were to read both Part 1 and Part 2, I be able count that as two books/If I only read Part 1, I am able to count that as an entire completed book?

A - Hi, if when you post on the review thread, you post for say part 1, and have reviewed it as part 1, and post the page count for part 1 etc. then it will be counted as one completed book, even if they've split it into two volumes x

Q - If the square says 1930+ Does that mean any book from 1930 onward? As in if I already have a book in the 2019 box can I put an extra in the 1930+ box? Same with the 1960+ box?

A - (So, for example, the third box at the top says 1960+, so this box can be completed with a book published between January 1st 1960, and December 31st 1979- as the next box is 1980-1985.).

A - Bookbuyer is right, the boxes with the pluses only go as far as the next box, so 1960+ = January 1st 1960, and December 31st 1979
I'll change it so it's clearer x

Q - I have a question, I was planning on reading On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous next month. I've flipped through my copy and it is written entirely as an ordinary novel, yet it is tagged second highest on Goodreads as 'poetry', by 379 people. I've read some reviews and lots state that the writing is poetic but none that this is actually poetry (at least as far as I can tell). Would I be able to classify this as a novel? Or would it have to be classed as poetry for this challenge, due to the tag? I completely understand if so but just thought I'd query it :)

A - Hi, it does say in the blurb that it's a novel, but like you said it is tagged poetry. I had a look through it, and it looks like it is mainly regular writing, but there is a chapter at around the 65% mark which appears to be written in verse. That chapter takes up around 5% of the book, so maybe we could count the book as a regular book, excluding 5% of the page count? So the highest page count at 368 pages would be (368*0.95 = ) 350 pages.

Q - hello, I just had a quick question. I'm planning on reading HP and the order of the phoenix, but the only edition we're allowed to use for a non- illustrated edition was published in 2014. So I was just wondering if I could still use the original release date of 2003?

A - Hi, yes it's completely fine to use the non-illustrated edition for the page count, and a different edition for date published. Just link the two editions when you post your review ☺

Q - Hi Sarah, just curious do u think this books will count for the challenge? The Total Money Makeover A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness by Dave Ramsey , Love Your Life, Not Theirs 7 Money Habits for Living the Life You Want by Rachel Cruze , The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason ?

A - Hi, I had a look, and worked out the following -

Total Money Makeover Boxed Starter Set (Revised 3rd Ed., Workbook, Audio CD, Financial Peace Personal Finance Software) by Dave Ramsey = Highest page count = 272 pages - 31 pictures + 27 charts
272 pages - 116 pages for pictures/charts = 156 pages (so too low to claim a year)

Love Your Life, Not Theirs 7 Money Habits for Living the Life You Want by Rachel Cruze = highest page count = 272 pages - 0 pictures = counts.

The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason = highest page count = 264 pages - 0 pictures = counts.

Hope that helps ☺
