These are rules and guidelines regarding our challenges at YA Buddy Readers' Corner ♥. Our challenges will have specific rules, but these are general rules which span all challenges. If these rules do not apply for any reason, we will tell you on the challenge main thread.

1. For every book read during a challenge, you must submit a review or a minimum of 4 status updates, with details specific to the book, for your book to count towards a challenge. This is to keep things fair for everybody. It is not that we don't trust you if you say you have read a book, but I'm sure everybody would agree that it would be unfair of us to award points to someone who has not actually read the book they say they have read. Please do not be offended if we ask you to add details to your review. Simple things like what you liked and disliked about the book are a good place to start, and as long as there are details, you don't need to write a lot.
EG:
'I enjoyed this book, although I was shocked by Josephine's cancer scare. I loved the way Phil supported her though, and the wedding in Paris was so sweet! I didn't like the foul language on occasion though, and adopting 5 puppies at once seemed a little short-sighted, especially considering that they lived in an apartment in London.'
This review is short but contains lots of details -
1. Both main character's names.
2. Event - The cancer scare.
3. Event - The wedding and its location.
4. Use of foul language.
5. Event - The adoption of the puppies.
6. Details about where the character's lived.

Status updates are a good alternative to a review if you don't like to write reviews, but must also contain details. Just updating with your page number or percentage read will not count, your status updates need to be specific.
EG:
10% - I can't believe he asked her to dance by the river!
25% - Things are not looking good for Paul after that diagnosis.
75% - She's pregnant?! And it's twins?!
80% - Gosh, wasn't expecting that twist, what is going to happen to Hope now? Surely her sister wouldn't leave her stranded?

These updates contain several details -
1. Both main character's names.
2. Event - dancing by the river
3. Event - a shocking diagnosis.
4. Event - pregnant with twins.
5. Event - Hope is stranded.

2. Buddy reads only count for extra points if they are done within our group - YA Buddy Readers' Corner ♥. We want people to buddy read, but we feel it is only fair to give extra points to those people who are active in the group.
You can find buddies on our 'Wanted: Reading Buddies' threads here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
You can also see which buddy reads are already planned on our 'Planned Buddy Reads' threads here (there is one for each month) - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

3. A buddy read won't count if you haven't actually discussed the book. We expect you to make around 4 detailed comments for your buddy read to count. Saying 'Starting', 'chapter 4', 'finished' will not count as you haven't actually discussed the book. Again, comments about what you liked and disliked about the book are a good place to start. It is also expected that you will talk about the book with your buddies, just posting your updates and disappearing again isn't really the idea, and if you do that regularly, then your buddy reads won't count.

4. Buddy read start dates are flexible to some extent. We request that you not start a buddy read more than 7 days before the start date though, and if you do start early, we recommend that you go back to the thread and discuss the book when your buddy starts reading. Please note that if you start reading more than 7 days before the buddy read is supposed to start, but don't comment on the buddy read thread until the start date, your buddy read will still not count because you still started reading early.

If you are joining the buddy read late, your first comment must be within 14 days of the start date, or within 14 days of the last comment on the thread (whichever is latest). If you are starting later than this date, you will need to find a new buddy on the 'Wanted: Reading Buddies' thread, and you will need to have the thread reset to the new starting date. (You can request a date change on the planned buddy reads thread for that month.)

If you are buddy reading a book, and your reading buddy does not turn up, your buddy read will still count as long as you are reading your book in the buddy reading window (7 days before to 14 days after the start date) and you make 4 detailed comments on the buddy read thread.

The only exception to this rule is the 'Group Buddy Reads' which run for 1 calendar month. So a GBR starting on January 1st runs until January 31st. A GBR starting on April 1st runs until April 30th. And so on. If you are joining a GBR please make sure that the start date is for the month you are planning to read the book, as GBRs finish at the end of the month, and the previously mentioned '14 days after the last comment' does not apply to GBRs.

5. Reviews and status updates MUST be different to any buddy read comments you might have made. If your review or status updates are cut and pasted from the buddy read thread, then you will need to write either a new review/status updates, or make new comments on the buddy read thread if you would like to claim the extra buddy read points.

6. * Books must be over 50 pages long, without illustrations. This is for YA, NA, adult, and non-fiction books.
-- 75 pages minimum for middle-grade and children's books without illustrations.
-- 150 pages minimum for poetry, books written in verse, manga/graphic novels, books which have some illustrations, and plays.
-- Books which are mainly illustrations, such as some children's books, picture books, and some non-fiction books etc. cannot be used as part of any of our challenges.
**Please note that these are the minimum page counts for page points, not for the number of books read, or for earning any bonus points, or completing any requirements for the challenge you may be taking part in.**

* Middle-grade, and children's books without illustrations will earn 1 point for every 75 pages due to the reduced word count. This applies to all books which are tagged 'middle-grade' or 'childrens' higher than they are tagged YA or adult. This includes The Goosebumps Series, The Wind in the Willows, The Trials of Morrigan Crow, and The Secret Garden to name a few.

* Books which are illustrated will receive 1 point for every 150 pages. If your book has an illustrator listed, is tagged 'illustrated', has an illustrator named on the copyright page of the book, or on Amazon, or on WorldCat then it will fall into this category. This includes books such as:
- The Magisterium Series,
- The Spiderwick Chronicles Eg:The Field Guide,
- A Series of Unfortunate Events Eg:The Bad Beginning,
- books by Roald Dahl Eg:Matilda,
- Doll Bones,
- Charlotte's Web Charlotte's Web
- Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Series Eg:Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
- A Monster Calls,
- The Little Prince,
- The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic,
- The World of All Souls: A Complete Guide to A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and the Book of Life,
- The Illuminae Files Eg:Illuminae (Illustrated by Marie Lu)
- Coraline
to name a few.
--We do have a list of editions of certain books which we consider to NOT have illustrations. Please see message 4 below. These listed editions are currently the only editions of these books which can be used for full points rather than illustrated book points.

* Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse will receive 1 point for every 150 pages due to reduced word count. If your book is tagged 'Sequential Art', 'Graphic Novels', 'Manga', 'Poetry', 'Verse', 'Play', or words to that effect, then it will fall into this category.

7. In challenges where points are given for pages read, higher page count editions may be used, but page counts for iphone/ibook/ipod/itunes editions will not be accepted, and neither will page counts for audiobook editions of any kind, or miniature versions of books such as Flipback, dwarsligger, PenguinMini (you are still welcome to read in these formats, but must use a different page count). We also request that you leave us a link to the edition with the page count that you are using, if the book has multiple editions with different page counts.

We will also not accept a page count which is more than double the next highest for that book. (ie: if there are 4 editions at 200 pages, and 1 edition at 2200 pages, we would not accept the 2200 page edition as it is more than double the next highest at 200 pages.)

8. Each book can only be used once during each individual challenge, even if it fits two or more categories.
If your book fits two or more challenges that are being run at the same time, you can use it once in each challenge as long as it fits the challenge criteria. More details regarding how you can use books in challenges will be provided with each individual challenge.

9. Manga, graphic novels, picture books, books with more pictures than words in general will not count for bonus points or completing requirements in challenges unless specifically stated. You may read non-fiction, but if your book has mainly pictures, you will not be able to use it (eg: a cookery book which is mainly pictures would not count).
If a challenge does accept graphic novels, it will be stated in the rules, and you will generally receive 1/3 points due to the reduced word count.

10. Re-reads are allowed for most challenges, as long as it has been at least 8 months since you last read the book. You will need to write a new review or status updates which contain new details about the book though so that we know that you have re-read it. We recommend that you say '2019 review' or something similar in your review so that we know which bit is new.
Some challenges do not allow re-reads, such as our 'Out with the old, in with the new' Challenge', which requires you to read books which you have not previously read.
Some challenges will only allow you to use a re-read for a certain task, or will not allow you to earn bonus points using a re-read, so please double-check the rules for the challenge you are participating in, prior to reading.

11. Books must be read within the challenge dates to qualify. All challenges will clearly state '* Books must be read between -start date- and -end date- inclusively'. Please make sure that your 'date started' and 'date finished' dates on your review are within these dates. If you are based in Australia or are massively ahead of Goodreads time (Pacific Standard Time - http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time... ) please let us know in advance so that we can expect your start times to be a few hours out.

Some challenges will allow you to claim reduced points for books started before the beginning of the month, or for books which you have not finished (DNFs), or for books which you will be unable to finish before the end of the month. We will still expect a review or status updates though, with details about the book, and points will be based on how many pages you read during the challenge start and end times. Please let us know how many pages you read during the month of the challenge when you post your review.

12. If you need to make a change to a post after it has been counted, please DO NOT go back and edit it. Make a new post on your review thread, link to your original post, and explain what the change is - either a higher page count has been found, or a buddy read needs adding, or you want to change what 'category' your book is used for etc. and please include necessary links as this will allow us to make your changes quicker. If you go back and edit posts it makes us harder to know what we counted your book as in first time. For example, if you change the page count, we have to then try and work out how many points we have already given you for that book in order to add the extra points on. If we are busy, and you have altered a post that has already been counted, we reserve the right to not add on the extra points, because you've made it harder for us.

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 82878 comments Mod
13. Reviews and status updates must be unique and your own. Plagiarised reviews and status updates will not be accepted. If you are caught cutting and pasting someone else's reviews, you will be removed from the challenge, and banned from our challenges for at least 6 months.

14. If you are taking part in a team challenge, please inform us if you are no longer able to participate so that we can try to find someone else to take your place. If we are 2 weeks into the challenge and you haven't posted a review, we may contact you to ask if you are still able to participate or not.

15. If you are taking part in a team challenge please be a considerate team member and let your team know how your reading is going. It's okay if you are not a chatty person, just let your team know that you are still reading even if you aren't appearing on the chat thread often. If you are struggling, or only able to post reviews on Saturdays for example, let your team know.

16. We do not have rules against review dumping (posting all your reviews at once), but we do ask that you try to post your reviews regularly during the course of the challenge, wherever possible, even if only once a week. If you have a reason for why you can't post your reviews until the end of the month, please let your team and us mods know, so that we know to expect it, and don't message you asking if you are still taking part.

17. You are welcome to read physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks for this challenge, and you are also welcome to read in any language as long as you provide us with an English translation of your review/updates either as part of your review, on your team's review thread, or by personal message to myself.

18. If for any reason you are unable to publish your review on Goodreads, it can also be sent to myself via personal message. Please continue to post on your team's review thread as normal, stating 'review sent to Sarah by personal message' after 'Review:'.

19. If you are using a 'series' buddy read thread, it is still expected that you will be reading the same book in the series as your buddy, at roughly the same time. If a buddy read thread is reset for book 4 in a series, then it is expected that people will be reading from book 4, and if updates are posted for books 1, 2, or 3 they will not be counted as you do not have a buddy reading those books with you.

If you are joining a series buddy read thread, and it is more than 14 days since anybody else on the thread finished the book that you're reading, then the buddy read will not count.

20. Please post the link to your buddy read along with the book you are reading and the start date on the 'Planned Buddy Reads' list for the correct month - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... If you continually schedule buddy reads and fail to post them on the planned buddy reads thread for the correct month, then we won't continue to give buddy read points. It is important that buddy reads are posted on the planned buddy reads list so that everyone is given the opportunity to join.

21. If you are taking part in a team challenge, we will be counting how many books you have read, as well as counting your points. This is to see if you are reading at the rate for the team for which you have signed up for. We won't be penalising people for the occasional bad month, but if you consistently sign up for a serious team, but only post 2 books a month, then we will ask you to drop down to a Just-For-Fun team in future. Similarly, if you sign up for a medium team and repeatedly read less than 8 books a month, we will also ask you to drop to fun or solo. This is because it is unfair to other team members if you continue to sign up for a medium/serious team, yet are only reading 2 books a month.

The minimum number of books for each type of team is 12 books for each team member for Serious, and 8-12 books for each team member for medium. There is no minimum for Just-For-Fun or solo players.

You will receive a 1 in the books read column of your scoreboard when you read a book with at least 100 pages, a middle-grade or childrens book (without illustrations) with at least 150 pages, or a graphic novel, poetry book, book written in verse, or play with at least 300 pages. If you have small editions of these type of book, we will allow you to add the pages together to receive a 1 in the books read column, but books must be posted to your review thread at the same time.

If you request to be added to a waiting list for either a serious or medium team, you may or may not get the space if one becomes available depending on how strong a reader you are deemed to be. If the person who has dropped out would be likely to read 12 books during the month, and you are likely to read 30, then we would most likely not be able to give you the spot.

22. Please do not request or create buddy read threads when you do not have a buddy. If you are found to be repeatedly requesting or creating buddy read threads, with no record of you planning the buddy read with anyone, and nobody else turning up to the buddy read, then we will stop awarding you the bonus buddy read points.

23. Please do not add editions of books to Goodreads with made-up page counts, just to earn you more points in our challenge. This is not only considered cheating but is also an abuse of your librarian privileges.

Thank you, and Happy Reading!

*****Moderators Announcement*****

As of October 1st, we will no longer be using 'Series-Read-Along' threads for buddy read points in our challenges. This is because people find it too hard to work out what will and will not count when using a series thread.

We will honour any series-read-along threads which have already been set up for October, but rules do still apply with regards to the fact that you and your buddy are supposed to be reading the same book, at roughly the same time.

In future, we ask that separate threads are used for each book in a series. You may set these up in advance, but you may find it easier to plan these as you and your buddy progress through the series if you both want to earn the bonus buddy read points.

From November 1st, any buddy reads submitted for our challenges which have taken place on a series-read-along thread, will not receive any buddy read points.

Thank you x

For reference, books which are only available as audiobooks can be converted to a page count by doing the following:

Start with how long the audiobook is -
Eg: 4 hours 32 minutes

Convert this to minutes -
Eg: (4 x 60) + 32 = 272 minutes

Audible says that their audiobooks run at roughly 150 words per minute. So multiply the number of minutes by 150 to get the number of words -
Eg: 272 x 150 = 40,800 words

The average paperback has 250 words per page, so divide the total number of words by 250, to get how many pages.
Eg: 40,800 / 250 = 163.2 (so 164 pages)

This number can then be scored at the normal YA/Adult rate of 1 point per 50 pages
