I read Les Miserables every year, so I would definitely jump in on a buddy or group read read. It has been years since I read The Count of Monte Cristo, but I remember it being a very good book. It doesn't seem as long as it actually is once you start reading it.

There seems to be interest in both books. What about one per quarter? Say Q1: Dumas, Q2: Hugo. Or vice versa. If the long buddy reads go well, maybe something for Q3 and Q4.

Angelique I think you missed me Cassandra, I'm in for 46800 pages.

Sounds good, Greg. I posted a note to Zara on the Buddy Reads in Message #423. I guess I'll be starting The Count of Monte Cristo on New Year's Day!

Akash Vidyasagar (akashrv) | 1 comments Really like the idea of this! I don't really want to limit myself to the genre or author I read throughout the year, so number of pages is a goal that offers great flexibility.

This being a very important year academically, I'll have limited time to read anything other than those Quantitative Analysis books :(

A very modest 15,000 is a good start, I think.

I noticed there is another Sarah, so you can put me under Sarah Lou

Well nothing forbids you to count the pages you read for class. For the past 8 years I've been doing diploma over diploma trying to find myself a calling. So I understand it limits your reading time. Moreover you don't always feel like reading for fun when you read for school all day long. I couldn't count the articles, but I surely count the monographies.

Cassandra | 5832 comments Sorry Angelique! I added you.

Sarah, at least for your first book post, can you remind me that you are Sarah Lou? After the first book, the page number should be able to tell me who is who, but I can picture the first add being a disaster.

Theresa, thanks for adding those books to the buddy read thread!

Akash, feel free to count your textbook pages.

Marina (sonnenbarke) I've thought about this challenge for a while, but in the end I decided to participate, so please sign me up :-)
So far I've read 28,000+ pages this year, so let's say I aim at 30,000 for 2015, though it really seems to be A LOT! But I like a challenge :-)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments Hello, just thought I'd share some of the long books I'm planning on reading next year to give others some ideas. The stars are just for me, meaning I own the book.

A Suitable Boy - 1474
The Count of Monte Cristo - 1276 (Jan-April)
War and Peace - 1273
The Stand - 1168
The Pillars of the Earth - 1088
Gone with the Wind - 1037
The Brothers Karamazov - 1013 (Jan)
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - 1006 (Jan)
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle - 706

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Nice list, Lilac! Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is the only one I hadn't heard of, and I've added it to my TBR list.

I own the Kindle version of A Suitable Boy and just picked up the paperback at a library book sale for 50 cents. Would you want to set up a Buddy Read for that one? It looks like you're already joining the Buddy Read for The Count of Monte Cristo.

message 74: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments That sounds like a good idea, I don't really mind when as long as it's not January, as I have enough long books planned for then. :)

And yes, I am. I'm really excited for that because I've heard so many good things about The Count of Monte Cristo.

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

I would be interested in reading The Pillars of the Earth and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell with you if you want to do buddy reads for them. Any idea when you're planning to read them?

message 76: by [deleted user] (new)

I will join in The Count of Monte Cristo and Les Miserables buddy reads as well :) really hope I'm not over committing here!

message 77: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments I'm reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel in January for a buddy read in another group. You're welcome to join, or we could set one up here as well.

The Pillars of the Earth I'm open to reading any time except January. :)

message 78: by [deleted user] (new)

Which group? If I am in that group I will join in :)

Since the Count of Monte Cristo and Les Miserables both go for the first three months of the year maybe sometime after that. Want to plan for April 1?

Kelsi, the Buddy Read for The Count of Monte Cristo runs Jan-Mar, but Les Misérables runs Apr-Jun. We wanted 3 months each for those.

Cassandra | 5832 comments Star, welcome to the challenge (and the group). This will be my first year counting pages as well, so it should be interesting!

Chloé (fullmetalclo) | 573 comments If you're looking for long fantasy but not as big than Game of thrones, there's Chronicles of the Black Company (The Chronicles of the Black Company, #1-3) by Glen Cook The Books of the South Tales of the Black Company (The Chronicles of the Black Company, #4-6) by Glen Cook The Return of the Black Company (The Chronicles of the Black Company, #7-8) by Glen Cook The Many Deaths of the Black Company (The Chronicles of the Black Company, #9-10) by Glen Cook .

They are 670 to 785 pages each. It's one of my favourite fantasy series. If you get into the series you have for 2'500-3'000 pages right here.

I have that series on my tbr Chloe! Might have to bump it up if I have the time this year :)

message 88: by Chloé (new)

Chloé (fullmetalclo) | 573 comments I hope you'll like it. I like it because no character is black or white. The "evils" have often a lot of redeeming qualities and the "heroes" a lot of flaws. Even if it's a company of brother, many of the most important caracters are women, and they are not damsels in distress.

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 2208 comments I have read both Les Miserables and the count of Montecristo this year, but I've seen other chunksters listed in this thread that I'd be keen on reading this year, e.g. Pillars. I would join a readalong if there was a chance.

Cassandra, could you please put me down for 40,000?

Cassandra | 5832 comments Wonderful! We have The Pillars of the Earth scheduled to start July 1st and run for the quarter. It's a bit far away, but we'd love to have you join.

Zara's Retreat | 2365 comments I have added the BRs suggested here in the BRs for next year. January alone is looking awesome with 5 BRs already. There's always room for more so keep them coming.

Hi Theresa,

I have The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany on my list for reading beginning in January. Do you want to do a BR on it perhaps?
