While the book is enjoyable overall, it seems that Jennifer Ashley has lost the focus of her series. Too many shifts in location and inclusion of new and unrelated characters (which is the direction of the future installments as well) has made it difficult for me to retain interest. Indeed, I took a really long break between the previous book and this one, and I am seriously considering discontinuing the series altogether.

Does it feel like one of those series that should have ended by now?

Not really. It is just a matter of each book being set in a different location and with almost new characters. Aside from the world in which the books are set, there is very little connection between characters and storylines. This also results in a lack of character development for previous characters.

It is a pity because I do like Ashley's writing.
