ARCHIVE Team Challenge: UNO 2020

Team New Wave Upside Down Cake
I am having a blast! This is taking me deep into my TBR pile, picking through the ones that got overlooked previously. (I didn't realize the purpose of all this was to INCREASE my TBRs, my bad! 😆)So far my favorite has been "Turtle Diary", mostly because I am a bookish introvert who prefers animals to people so it resonated, but I can certainly understand if others find it tediously boring.
A close second is "Galapagos". A dystopic novel and imaginative as only Kurt Vonnegut can be. It did seem a bit slow and repetitive initially, but improved when I got used to the style.
I "enjoyed" "Nickel Boys", although the topic is horrific. It seemed a bit rushed and not up to the standard of "The Underground Railroad" but who can write back-to-back masterpieces? (I can't even write one! 😭 )
And then there is the real clunker "Nicotine"..... Again, others may enjoy it, but it was not for me.
I am having so much fun! I really enjoyed the winternight series. I am currently reading the Five, and have barely put it down all day. It is so interesting!
Up till now “Gemina” is my favorite and I’m dragging the reading because I want it to last a bit longer😂. “Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls” is simply wonderful, and I caught myself with a little tear in my eye a couple of times, simply because of the amazing women mentioned. This book makes me want to know more about these magnificent women through history. “Kaddish.com” was not at all something for me. Maybe because I don’t know enough about Orthodox Jews, but I found it quite disturbing at times and not a pleasant or interesting read at all, so I only gave it 1 star.
Unfortunately due to school work, I wasn't able to read as much as I wanted. At least
was good enough that I immediately started the 2nd one:) Yesterday I started reading
and I'm having a lot of fun with it. Fascinating (and a bit morbid) look into what can (and can't) happen to our bodies after we die😁
The Warden by Anthony Trollope COMPLETED
1- first in series (The Barsetshire Novels)
2 - Authors LN Trollope
3 - Character LN Harding
4 - Character FN Septimus
I'm having a lot of fun! I was pleasantly surprised by Woven in Moonlight by Isabel Ibañez. I didn't have a lot of expectations for this book, but I ended liking it a lot!I also really enjoyed re-reading the Wicked series by Jennifer L. Armentrout! This week I haven't had as much time to read cause I've had a lot of homework. I'm currently reading Followers by Megan Angelo, and I'm planning on starting What You Have Heard Is True by Carolyn Forché later today.

Perky Space Chef! February Mini Challenge
This is an optional mini challenge for our UNO players. This month we are baking a delicious space treat!.
We have given you a recipe for Astral Pavolva. All underlined words need to be found as words in text or title, items on covers or cover colours. All underlined numbers, are matched to books read by page numbers, series numbers or publication dates. To make it easy, these are listed below.
For each book read you will receive 10 points.
Underlined Words -
There are 5 categories:
word in title
word in text
colour of book cover
item on cover
colour of item on cover
Underlined numbers -
There are 3 categories:
page numbers
series number
publication date
Creativity is the key to the challenge, not rules.
So, diagonal lines on the cover? That can work for "diagonally".
A green coloured book? Is the green a bit like a "lime"?!
Words can be in different contexts, so, for example, "peaks" could be a picture of mountain peaks on the cover
Numbers for the publication date can be the month or the day or the last two digits of the publication year. (3 digit numbers can not be used for publication date)
Publication date is for the edition being read (and shelved).
If you complete every item in the recipe your team will receive 30 bonus points
But wait... there's more!
Have your team create a recipe for your team name and submit via message to the UNO Pixie by Feb 29 to receive an additional 30 bonus points.
◈ Books can be started at any point since the start of the UNO challenge (Feb 1)
◈ Books need to be finished after the start of this mini challenge on February 14, 7pm AEDST (countdown is here) and before March 1 at 7pm AEDST (Countdown to March is here)
◈ Books used for this mini challenge do not need to be separate books for what you are claiming for your UNO hands
◈ The usual book length rules apply
◈ Team spreadsheets will be updated with a mini challenge tab so that you can track your books and claim your points
So put on your aprons, grab a carton of eggs and lets get started!
I added a sheet into our tracking ss where you can see all the words and numbers we need to fill. You can start adding your books there if you think they fit. If you're not sure, ask the team:) As said above we need to find the words and numbers in this recipe using the following rules:
Underlined Words -
There are 5 categories:
word in title
word in text
colour of book cover
item on cover
colour of item on cover
Underlined numbers -
There are 3 categories:

We can be creative! As long as the team agrees with your reason why your book fits a particular word, we should be fine:)

Ok, I’m not sureI got this completely down, but have just borrowed “The girl who drank the Moon” with the word ‘moon’ and the moon as a ‘circle’ on the cover. Can we use that? I’ll link it tomorrow. I have made a hold on “With the fire on high”, which I hope will be mine very soon ( I see a papaya on the cover and I know there will be a lot of cooking going on)

Jeanette wrote: "Ok, I’m not sureI got this completely down, but have just borrowed “The girl who drank the Moon” with the word ‘moon’ and the moon as a ‘circle’ on the cover. Can we use that? I’ll link it tomorrow..."I think that
can work for both moon and circle. I added it to our ss:)
I think I'll use
for "sharp" teeth on the coverand
either for "dry" (sand is dry) or "peaks" (peaks of sand on the cover)What do you think?
So, the words can be in the text of the book too, correct? I am reading a sparrow falls. In the first 22 pages I’ve seen Cold, Dry, Sharp, White, and Moon.Am I understanding this correctly?
Heather wrote: "So, the words can be in the text of the book too, correct? I am reading a sparrow falls. In the first 22 pages I’ve seen Cold, Dry, Sharp, White, and Moon.Am I understanding this correctly?"
Yes, in the text is fine:)
For words you find in the text, can it be a variation of the original word? Like glasses for glass or sugaring for sugar?
Jessamine wrote: "For words you find in the text, can it be a variation of the original word? Like glasses for glass or sugaring for sugar?"I would say yes to glasses, but no for sugaring. The last one may be stretching a bit😅
Are we all working on finding the words together as a team, or each individually?Once the word has been found once (by anyone), do we get extra points if someone else finds it?
Sorry, I’m a bit confused.....
Anne wrote: "Are we all working on finding the words together as a team, or each individually?Once the word has been found once (by anyone), do we get extra points if someone else finds it?
Sorry, I’m a bit ..."
We are finding them separately. Every word that have been read for gives us 10 points. There are no extra points for finding a word more than once. Hope that helps:)
Finished Gemina (2 blue): contains the number '2' on cover, and the word 'shredded' on page 623
Fra og med dig (4 red)
Grave Witch (skip):
p. 150: stomach, cold
p. 219: plate, eggs, one
p. 220: gloves
p. 284: moon
p. 286: circle, three, two
p. 289: six
p. 298: orange
I tried to add to the mini challenge, but I'm not sure. Can a book only be linked to 1 word or number, or can you add the same book to as many words/numbers as possible?

Could our dear Captains add it to the spreadsheet for me, please?
Thank you!
Jeanette wrote: "I tried to add to the mini challenge, but I'm not sure. Can a book only be linked to 1 word or number, or can you add the same book to as many words/numbers as possible?"Every book can be added to one word or number. I have a separate column "Additional words/numbers " where you can add any other number/word that can work for that book. Basically, it's in case I need to move some books around, so I can fit as many of our books as possible to the mini-challenge.
I put Grave Witch for "gloves" and every other possibilite added to the "Additional words/numbers " column:)

I think the hardest word to find are: cornflour, kiwifruit, and passionfruit
Hardest numbers: 120, 270, 300. For these numbers, we need to find books that have exactly that many pages.
I added the same list to message 8 and I'll try to update it as soon as there are any changes:)
Heather wrote: "Since words can be used in different contexts. Would something made with cornflour work?"I'm afraid the word has to be in the text. It can be spelled "corn flour" though. I understand that some places it's spelled like that:) Same go for "passion fruit", "kiwi fruit" and "star fruit".
If you have something that's made from cornflour on the cover then that may work:)

Heather wrote: "Since words can be used in different contexts. Would something made with cornflour work?"In the text, it has to be the word cornflour - but if you found something on the cover that represents cornflour, then that works, such as a corn muffin :-)
Per the instructions: Creativity is the key to the challenge, not rule - so even a cover that is light yellow could work, I think.

Props to you for finishing it!
I've been lucky enough to have enjoyed all my books thus far! I think my favorite was The Peach Keeper. I love all of Sarah Addison Allen her books. They're written in the magical realism style.
So let's hear about your favorites! Everybody knows these games are really about increasing our TBR piles! 🤓
