This will be a team reading challenge which will run from February 1st 2020 to February 29th 2020. Results will be announced on March 1st 2020.

To complete this challenge, participants will be split into teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy-read your book. You can also earn some bonus points by reading multiple books by the same author.

You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant ☺

How it works:

Have you ever read a book that was so good you wanted to read every book the author has even written? Ever started a fantastic series but never got round to reading the rest of the books in the series? Keep neglecting a recommendation from a friend? Then this is the challenge for you!

To earn points in this challenge, simply read and review as normal, but if you would like to earn your team some bonus points, then the idea behind this challenge is to read multiple books by the same author.

Each time you post a review on your team review thread, we will keep a tally of how many books have been read by that author, and once your team has read 5 or more, you will receive bonus points (at a rate of 10 bonus points per book).

Important:
* You may only claim one author per book, even if your book has multiple authors.
* Bonus points will be awarded to the team rather than to individuals, to make things simpler for scoring, and so that bonus points are given fairly.
* Bonus points will not be earned until as a team you have read 5 or more books per author.
* Tallys are kept as a team, so if 3 people on the same team read the same book, that will count as 3 books read by the 1 author.
* There is no limit as to how many authors your team is allowed to read books by.
* You may also choose to stalk a narrator, translator, editor, just make it clear which person you are using when you post your review.
* There is no penalty for reading books by different authors, you just won't earn bonus points.
* * You may read any kind of book for this challenge, but the page counts necessary to claim 1 book read by an author are the following -
- YA, NA, Adult, Non-fiction books (without illustrations) - 200 pages.
- Middle-grade/children's books (without illustrations) - 300 pages.
- Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, books written in verse, anything with some illustrations - 600 pages.
- Books which are mainly illustrations cannot be used.
* You may add together page counts to reach these minimums, but you can only add together page counts of books which are under the limits, ie: less than 200, 300, and 600 pages respectively. You cannot add together page counts of books which meet the minimum page count on their own.
* If you do choose to add together the page counts of multiple books to reach the minimum page count, you may only choose one author, you wouldn't be able to claim more than one author. So if you read one book with 119 pages, and a second with 113 pages, each with a different author, you could add these together to get to the minimum page count, and then choose one author to be your bonus letter.
* Books started before February can be used for page points +/- buddy read points, but you will not be able to claim any bonus points.
* We will consider all requests for people to be placed on the same team as someone else, but this may not be possible in all cases. It is worth asking if you know someone else will be reading the same books as you though.

Example -

Team Wood:

__________|_Books_|_Buddy_|__Page____|_Bonus_|__Total
__________|_Read__|_Reads_|__Points__|_Points|

Bonnie____|___4___|___0___|____30____|_______|____30
Polly_____|___3___|__12___|____12____|_______|____24
Ethan_____|___3___|__12___|____12____|_______|____24
Ginny_____|___3___|__12___|____12____|_______|____24
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|_______|_____0
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|_______|_____0

'Stalk-An-Author' Bonus_______________+090

Team______|__13___|__36___|____66____|__90___|___192

Authors Read:
Cat Patrick_______________|_1_|__0
Colleen Hoover____________|_✔_|__9
Neal Shusterman___________|_3_|__0
Name______________________|_0_|__0
Name______________________|_0_|__0

Total_________________________|__9

In the above example, the team has read 9 books by Colleen Hoover, and 4 books by other authors. Because more than 5 books have been read by Colleen Hoover, the team earns bonus points on that author at a rate of 10 bonus points per book. They do not receive bonus points on the other authors because they have not yet read 5 books by either of them, but if they do read more, they might begin to earn more bonus points.
Once 5 books have been read, the number moves into the second column, so that it's easy to see how many bonus points the team should receive.

Rules/Guidelines:

* Books must be read between the 1st of February and the 29th of February inclusive. Books started before February may be used, but you will only earn points for pages read in February, and will not be able to claim any bonus points. Please let us know how many pages you have read in February when posting your review.

* Books must be at least 50 pages long, without illustrations/photographs/diagrams etc.
-- 75 pages minimum for middle-grade and children's books.
-- 150 pages minimum for poetry, books written in verse, manga/graphic novels, books which have some illustrations, and plays.
-- Books which are mainly illustrations, such as some children's books, picture books, and some non-fiction books etc. cannot be used as part of this challenge.
**Please note that these are the minimum page counts for page points, not for the number of books read, or for earning any bonus points.**

* Middle-grade, and children's books without illustrations/photographs will earn 1 point for every 75 pages due to the reduced word count. This applies to all books which are tagged 'middle-grade' or 'children's' more times than they are tagged YA. This includes Goosebumps books, The Wind in the Willows, the Magisterium series, and The Secret Garden to name a few.
**Please note that these are the minimum page counts for page points, not for the number of books read, or for earning any bonus points.**

* Books which are illustrated or have photographs will receive 1 point for every 150 pages. If your book has an illustrator listed or is tagged 'illustrated', then it will fall into this category. This includes books such as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Spiderwick Chronicles, A Series of Unfortunate Events, books by Roald Dahl, Doll Bones, Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children Series, A Monster Calls, The Little Prince, and Charlotte's Web to name a few.

* A list of editions of some of these books, which we consider not to be illustrated can be found on our challenge rules thread here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... These are the only editions of these listed books which can be used to earn points as a book rather than an illustrated book.

* A list of books which have a modified page count to account for illustrations, which can then be used as a regular book can also be found here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

* Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse will receive 1 point for every 150 pages due to reduced word count. If your book is tagged 'Sequential Art', 'Graphic Novels', 'Comics', 'Manga', 'Poetry', 'Verse', 'Play', or words to that effect, then it will fall into this category.

* If your poetry book or graphic novel does not meet the minimum page count, we will allow you to add together the page counts of 2 or more books to make it to the minimum page count. Books must be posted at the same time, and must be less than 150 pages each.
(This applies to meeting the page count requirement, not meeting any other requirements.)

* If you are reading novellas which are less than 50 pages long, you may also add together the page counts of one or more novellas of less than 50 pages, to get to the minimum page count of 50 pages. Books must be posted at the same time.
(This applies to meeting the page count requirement, not meeting any other requirements.)

* You are welcome to read physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks for this challenge, and you are also welcome to read in any language as long as you provide us with an English translation of your review/updates either as part of your review, on your team's review thread, or by personal message to myself.

* If for any reason you are unable to publish your review on Goodreads, it can also be sent to myself via personal message. Please continue to post on your team's review thread as normal, stating 'review sent to Sarah by personal message' after 'Review:'.

* Re-reads are allowed in this challenge, as long as it has been at least 8 months since you last read the book. You will need to write a new review or updates though please. We recommend that you post on your review '2020 re-read', or something to that effect so that we can easily see what your new review is.

*A review or 4 detailed updates will be required for each book read.

*Buddy reads must have a minimum of 4 comments to count, and comments must be detailed, and about the book. We also expect you to discuss the book with your buddies, not just post updates and leave. Comments must also be different from your review or status updates. If your buddy read comments, and your review or status updates are identical, then you will not receive points for both until they contain different details.

* Buddy reads must take place within this group (YA Buddy Readers' Corner ♥) to gain the extra points. You can see which buddy reads are already planned each month here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

* You should not start a buddy read more than 7 days before the start date, or more than 14 days after the start date, or the last comment on the thread, whichever is later. If you do need to change the date, check with your buddy as they may also be able to start early/late with you.

* Group Buddy Reads can be joined to earn buddy read points, but only GBRs for February 2020 will count.

* Please note that we are no longer using 'Series' threads in our challenges. If you choose to take part in a buddy read on a series thread rather than a thread for an individual book, then you will not earn any buddy read points for it.

* Please post the link to your buddy read along with the book you are reading and the start date on the 'Planned Buddy Reads' list for the correct month - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... If you continually schedule buddy reads and fail to post them on the planned buddy reads thread for the correct month, then we won't continue to give buddy read points. It is important that buddy reads are posted on the planned buddy reads list so that everyone is given the opportunity to join.

* There are no set books which need to be read, any book which fits within the rules will count, so books can be chosen by the reader. Please check with us before reading if you are unsure whether your book counts or not.

* Bonus points will be given as detailed in the 'points' section below.

* This challenge will begin and end on Goodreads time, which is Pacific Standard Time - https://greenwichmeantime.com/time-zo... The challenge will start at 00:01 on February 1st 2020 PST, and end at 00:01 on March 1st 2020 PST.

* You are welcome to start the challenge on the 1st of the month in your own time zone, but you must also finish the challenge on your own time zone. Please let us know if you are doing this, as Goodreads may time stamp your books as being started on the last day of the previous month.

* Whilst you may start on your own timezone, the challenge will still end on Goodreads time, so even if you start late, you cannot end late.

* Higher page count editions may be used when claiming points for pages, but page counts for iphone/ibook/ipod/itunes editions will not be accepted, and neither will page counts for audiobook editions of any kind, or miniature versions of books such as Flipback, dwarsligger, PenguinMini (you are still welcome to read in these formats, but must use a different page count). We will also not accept a page count which is more than double the next highest for that book. (ie: if there are 4 editions at 200 pages, and 1 edition at 2200 pages, we would not accept the 2200 page edition as it is more than double the next highest at 200 pages.)

* We request that you leave us a link to the edition with the page count that you are using if the book has multiple editions with different page counts.

* Please do not go back and alter posts once they have been counted, if you need to make a change, please make a new post on your team's review thread, with a link to your original post, and then explain the change, for example; a higher page count edition has been found, or a buddy read needs to be added, and please include links.

* We do reserve the right to not add additional points on when posts have been amended, as it may be unclear how many points were awarded the first time.

* We will be tracking the number of books that people are reading, to see whether they are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that they are on. If over a period of several months you are consistently reading less than the required number of books, we will ask you to move to a lower level of team, or go solo. This is because it is unfair to other team members if you continue to sign up for a medium/serious team, yet are only reading 2 books a month.

* Our regular challenge rules can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

*** If you are not sure if your book counts, please ask before you read it. Questions can be posted on this thread, or sent by personal message to myself.***

Points :

Books - *1 point per 50 pages*

*50 - 99 pages = 1 points
*100 - 149 pages = 2 point
*150 - 199 pages = 3 points
*200 - 249 pages = 4 points
*250 - 299 pages = 5 points
*300 - 349 pages = 6 points
*350 - 399 pages = 7 points
*400 - 449 pages = 8 points
*450 - 499 pages = 9 points
*500 - 549 pages = 10 points
*550 - 599 pages = 11 points
*600+ pages = 12 points
(Maximum of 12 points per book)
(Please note that this is the minimum page count for page points, not the minimum page count for claiming bonus points.)

Middle-grade/children's books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 75 pages*

*75 - 149 pages = 1 points
*150 - 224 pages = 2 point
*225 - 299 pages = 3 points
*300 - 374 pages = 4 points
*375 - 449 pages = 5 points
*450 - 524 pages = 6 points
*525 - 599 pages = 7 points
*600+ pages = 8 points
(maximum of 8 points per book)
(Please note that this is the minimum page count for page points, not the minimum page count for claiming bonus points.)

Graphic novels/manga/poetry/plays/books written in verse/books which have some illustrations - *1 point per 150 pages*

*150 - 299 pages = 1 points
*300 - 449 pages = 2 point
*450 - 599 pages = 3 points
*600+ pages = 4 points
(maximum of 4 points per book)
(Please note that this is the minimum page count for page points, not the minimum page count for claiming bonus points.)

* Buddy reads DOUBLE your points score for pages, so a 300-page book (6pts) + buddy read (6pts) = 12 points. 600-page book (12pts) + buddy read (12pts) = 24 points. (Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in our group.)

★ ★ ★ Please note that while you may add together page counts to get to the minimum necessary for the 'books read' column, books which meet the minimum page counts will still be scored individually. This means that if you submit 3 novellas of 70 pages to reach the 200-page minimum, you will receive 1 point for each of these novellas, as each book is individually long enough to earn bonus points. This applies to all types of points.★ ★ ★

Bonus Points -

* Bonus points will be awarded based on the number of books read, as a team, by any one author. There is no limit as to how many authors may be used.
* Bonus points will be awarded at a rate of 10 bonus points per book, once 5 books have been read by any one author.
* If any author has not been read 5 or more times, your team will not receive bonus points for that author.

- Bonus points for stalking authors are awarded to team totals only, so solo players will not be able to claim these points.

*Mods will keep track of each teams points, using the following system -

Team Name:

__________|_Books_|_Buddy_|__Page____|_Bonus_|__Total
__________|_Read__|_Reads_|__Points__|_Points|

Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|_______|_____0
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|_______|_____0

'Stalk-An-Author' Bonus_______________+000

Team______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0

Authors Read:
Name______________________|_0_|__0
Name______________________|_0_|__0
Name______________________|_0_|__0
Name______________________|_0_|__0

Please note - we will be tracking how many books you have read, but you will not receive points for this column. This is to allow us to see whether you are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that you have requested to be on. You will receive a '1' for every YA/NA/Adult/non-fiction book (without illustrations) over 100 pages long, for every middle-grade or children's book (without illustrations) over 150 pages long, or for every 300 pages of graphic novels, poetry, plays, novels written in verse, and book with some illustrations etc, that you have read. If you consistently ask to be on a Serious or Medium team without reading the minimum number of books, you may be asked to drop down to a lower level team.

This challenge will be a team challenge. When signing up please let us know if you want to join a 'Serious' team (reading 12 books or more each), a 'Medium' team (reading 8-12 books each) or a 'Just for fun' team (reading any number of books each).

***Please only sign up for a 'Serious' or 'Medium' team if you are able to read the minimum number of books for that level of team, so 3 books a week for Serious, and 2 books a week for Medium.

This means that in 2019 someone in Serious would have read at least 144 books, and someone in Medium would have read between 96 and 144 books.***

You may also sign up as a solo participant, and will compete against your other solo competitors, as well as those people in teams. An individual leaderboard will be published at the end of the challenge.

Teams should be posted by February January 22nd/23rd at the latest. If you wish to join a 'Serious' or 'Medium' team, please sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. You may join as a solo player, or join a fun team (where possible) at any time.

Thank you! ☺

Q - Am I right in remembering that there was a rule change so that when requesting BR threads we have to request for each book and a different date for each, rather than one whole series thread?

A - As of October 1st, we will no longer be using 'Series-Read-Along' threads for buddy read points in our challenges.

In future, we ask that separate threads are used for each book in a series. You may set these up in advance, but you may find it easier to plan these as you and your buddy progress through the series if you both want to earn the bonus buddy read points.

From November 1st, any buddy reads submitted for our challenges which have taken place on a series-read-along thread, will not receive any buddy read points.

**Above is from the 'rules' section. This is from the challenge section for this challenge

* Please note that we are no longer using 'Series' threads in our challenges. If you choose to take part in a buddy read on a series thread rather than a thread for an individual book, then you will not earn any buddy read points for it.

A - Bookbuyer is right, we've switched to using single book threads rather than series threads because it was confusing for people which threads were active, and for which books when people were just reading lots of different books on the same thread x

Q - this is my first time. i have tried to read the rules multiple times, but they are pretty long, and I'm confused about where to go, where to search for buddy reads, and where/when to post. Help, anybody?

A - Hi, have you seen our 'How to use this group' thread? You can find it here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
There are sections on there that explain buddy reading and how to find buddies, and there's also some basics things about our challenges ☺ If you have a question though, please feel free to ask xx

Q - I got 20% into Red Rising (Red Rising Saga, #1) by Pierce Brown last July but didn't finish, can I start it over this month and have it count?

A - Sure, just let us know that you restarted from the beginning in February and we'll count it 😊 When you post your review I mean x

Q - I looked through the rules and did not see anything.. curious about counting books written by the same author under a different name? Would a book by Seanan McGuire be counted separately from one by Mira Grant even though she is the same person?

A - We would usually only count pseudonyms as being the same person if both author names are on the book/book's Goodreads page, or it's noted on the author's Goodreads profile, or we sometimes accept it if it's on Wikipedia. It's clear on both author's profiles that they're the same person, so they will count, but you'll need to make it clear when you post the review, so tell us that you're counting it as 'Mira Grant' (pseudonym for Seanan McGuire) for example, so that we don't put it down under the other name (you'll need to discuss with your teammates which name they're using if they're reading books by the same author) x

Q - if I’m reading a box set am I only allowed to receive points for the whole box at once or individual books?? Can I use all four authors or just one??

A - I think that, if you review each book individually and they're all over 200 pages, you can get points for individual books.

A - Hi, Quirks is right, if the books are available individually, and you review them individually, then as long as they meet the criteria for the challenge you can use them separately.

So if you read The Summer I Turned Pretty Trilogy The Summer I Turned Pretty; It's Not Summer Without You; We'll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han , you could either submit it as the boxset and have it counted as one book, or submit it as the three individual books, with an individual review for each book, and have it count as three books ☺

Q - Could I use both authors??

A - You can use either of the two authors for a book. But not both of them for the same one. Like if you read the Magisterium series, you could use Cassandra Clare for three books and Holly Black for two. But you can still only choose one author per book.

A - Hi, Quirks is right, if the book you are reading has more than one author, you can only choose to claim one of those authors. You can decide which author you want to use though ☺

Haha, I think a lot of us have been there. Or even just thinking of one thing, and typing it instead. Done that with names before. Writing to or about one person but mind drifts to someone else and that name comes out instead.
