Hello, this thread will hopefully give you some ideas as to how you can use our group ☺

If you're new here - Welcome! Feel free to say hello on our 'Introduce Yourself Here!' thread - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... If you are an author, let us know, and we'll add your book to our group bookshelves ☺

What is buddy reading? Buddy reading is where you read a book at the same time as one or more other people, and discuss the book on a buddy reading thread for that book ☺

A brief overview of our group (by folder) -

*Getting to know you - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
This is where you can introduce yourself, chat, find Goodreads friends, and find each other on other social networking sites.

*Important info - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
This is where you will find challenge rules, and other useful stuff. There is also a 'talk to the mods' thread, where you ask us any questions you might have.

*Wanted: Reading Buddy - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
This is where you can look for reading buddies. We'll go into more detail in the buddy reading section below.

*Planned buddy reads - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
This is where you can request threads for buddy reads, and look up what buddy reads are already happening.

*Book talk - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
This folder is about books, you can do a reading sprint with someone (see who can read the most in a set amount of time), you can tell us about a bad book, you can tell us about a good book, you can share a review you've written, tell us what you're currently reading, and even ask for recommendations.

*Free ebooks - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
This is where you can find posts on books which are currently free, and you can also find author's who are offering books for free in exchange for an honest review.
Author's if you have a book available for free, either short-term or long-term, or would like to offer copies of your book in exchange for a review, you are welcome to post here.

*Group Buddy Read - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
This is where we buddy read books as a group - sort of like a book of the month. Group Buddy Reads are chosen using Goodreads' lists, so feel free to vote/unvote/add to our lists. You can find out more below.

Next we have our buddy reading folders -
*BUDDY READ: Contemporary/Romance - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
*BUDDY READ:Paranormal/Fantasy - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
*BUDDY READ: Dystopian/Sci-Fi - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
*BUDDY READ: Mystery/Crime - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
*BUDDY READ: Horror/Thriller - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
*BUDDY READ: Historical Fiction - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
*BUDDY READ: Adult Fiction - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
*BUDDY READ: Non-Fiction - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
*BUDDY READ: Classics/Literature - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
*BUDDY READ: Graphic Novels/Manga - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
This is how we organise our buddy reading threads, if you're not sure where a thread should go, just ask ☺ Sometimes books can fit into more than one category.
- If your book is tagged as erotica, please place the thread in the 'Adult Fiction' folder.

*Challenges - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
This is where you can find most of our challenges. These challenges run on a monthly basis, and have levels so that you can decide whether you'd like to read lots of books, a medium number of books, or if you'd like a more laid-back challenge ☺

*Team Threads
- You'll find one of these for most months of the year, and they'll be labelled with the month and year so that they're easily identifiable. You can find out more about our challenges below.

*Mega Month Challenge
- These are special challenges which take place once a year to celebrate the groups anniversary. Watch out for these in August. Sign-ups will go up in July, and will be made up of several different challenges. You can choose to take part in as many or as few as you want.

*Author's Corner - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
This has now been combined with Book Talk, and Free Books. Author's are welcome to post in whichever folder suits what they want to post best ☺

Further information about buddy reading!

There are two ways to find buddy reads. The first is on our 'Wanted' threads. There are three 'Wanted' threads' -
1) WANTED : Reading Buddies - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
This thread can be used to finding reading buddies for any book.
2) WANTED: Series Read Along Buddies! - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
This thread is used when you are looking to read multiple books in a series, so if you wanted to read all the Harry Potter books, then it would be okay to post on this thread to see if anybody else wants to read the series too.
3) WANTED : Reading Buddies - ARCs - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
This thread is for people who have been given a book to read BEFORE it's publication date, who are hoping to find someone else who also has a copy. We seperated ARCs onto their own thread as the main thread can get busy, and most people don't have access to books before they are published.

On these threads, you can -
* Post books which you would like to read with a buddy.
* Reply to other people who have already posted a book which you would like to read with them.

The second way to find buddy reads is to look at the planned buddy reads thread for the correct month, you can find them here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
On these threads you can see what buddy reads are happening each day of the month, and you can also find links to the buddy read thread for each book.
Anybody can join these buddy reads, simply comment on the buddy read thread, and get reading ☺

Some more things you might like to know about buddy reading...

1) Any member of this group can start a buddy read, or join a buddy read. You can do this either of the two ways described above - either on the wanted threads, or planned buddy reads threads, or even on a challenge thread. As long as you have a buddy, you're good!

2) Once you have found someone (or more than one person) to read a book (or books) with, discuss and decide on what date you will start the book, and whether you will have a reading schedule (example: 4 chapters a day), or whether you will read at your own pace.

3) Once you have your date, check to see if we already have a buddy reading thread for the book/books you are going to read. You can do this by searching within the group -

Type your books title in the search box, and click 'search'. On the screen which opens up, underneath the search bar at the top, click the bubble next to 'only topics', and then click 'search' again. This will bring up threads which have the book title you entered in the thread title.

Once you have found the thread, simply comment on the Planned Buddy Reads thread for the correct month, telling us when you are starting, and asking for the thread to be reset. If you can, please leave us the link to the old thread.
You can find the planned buddy reads threads here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

4) If there isn't an existing thread for your book then you can make one ☺(don't worry if you make a mistake, it can always be fixed x)

To make a new thread, first decide which genre folder your book fits in, we have:
Contemporary/Romance - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
Paranormal/Fantasy - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
Dystopian/Sci-Fi - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
Mystery/Crime - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
Horror/Thriller - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
Historical Fiction - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
Adult Fiction - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
Non-Fiction - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

An easy way to know which genre your book fits in to is to go to the books Goodreads page and check the 'genre' heading on the right hand side of the page:

In the above example, this book would be placed in the paranormal/fantasy folder ☺

- If you are unable to make a new thread, just post on the planned buddy reads thread for the correct month, letting us know when you're starting and one of us mods will create the thread for you.

5) Not sure how to make a buddy read thread? We can help! To make a buddy read thread for a book, go to the folder where your book fits, and click 'New topic' -

You will then find yourself on this screen -

Fill in each field;

*Topic - Title, Author, Start Date
(example: Dorothy Must Die (Dorothy Must Die #1) by Danielle Paige - Starting September 15th 2014)
*This topic is about - type in the title of your book and then select it from the drop down menu which pops up. This links your thread to the correct book.
*comment - You can include the blurb if you wish, or who will be reading the book, and the date you are starting.

- Don't worry if you make mistakes, they can always be fixed, and we won't hold it against you x

6) Now you have your thread, let everybody else know your buddy read is happening by posting on the 'Planned Buddy Reads' thread for the month your buddy read is happening. The folder for planned buddy reads is here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
This lets us know when your buddy read is happening so that we can add it to the calendar, and other people can join if they would like to.

7) Now you're all set to go! On the day of your buddy read, start reading your book, and discuss what you think about the book as you go along. You could talk about whether you are enjoying the book or not, what you think to the characters, whether the book reminds you of anything else, whether it's believable etc. Whatever you feel really.

Please remember to hide spoilers in spoiler tabs (view spoiler), by using <.spoiler.> <./spoiler.> (without the dots). And please respect that other people may think differently to you. We encourage you to discuss a book, even if one person hates it and one person loves it, but personal attacks on people are not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

Further Guidelines:

*You can buddy read any book in our group; we mainly read YA, but you can read adult, NA, middle grade, non-fiction etc. books here too. If you wish to read an erotica title, please place it in the 'Adult fiction' section.

*Buddy Reads may be scheduled for any day of the year.

*There is no limit as to how many buddy reads can be scheduled for one day.

*There is no limit as to how many people can participate in a buddy read.

*Your start date is the date you should start reading the book, not the date you should have it finished by. If you are going to be late or early to a buddy read please let your buddy know on the buddy reading thread.

* If you do need to start early or late, we ask that you not start more than 7 days early, or more than 14 days after the start date, or last comment on the thread, whichever is later. If you are taking part in one of our challenges you will not be able to claim the bonus buddying reading points if you are outside of these times.

*Please make a note of which buddy reads you have planned to avoid your buddy being disappointed if you forget your buddy read!

*If you are unable to make a buddy read, please let your buddy know by commenting on the buddy read thread.

*All of our buddy reads are open to any group member, author's included. Please be welcoming to anyone who asks to join your buddy read.

*Please be respectful of all group members, even those who have different views to you. It is okay to say how you feel, but we do not tolerate bullying or personal attacks of any kind.

Now for challenges!

* We usually run one reading challenge per month. The only exceptions to this are our Mega Month Challenge in August, and our Series-Read-Along Challenge which runs for 2 months over November/December.

* Our Challenges, excluding the two mentioned above, can be found in this folder - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

* Challenges are usually open for sign-ups from the 12th of the month (so June's challenge would be open for sign-ups from May 12th). We have different levels which you can sign up for, and sign-ups for Serious and Medium level teams close on the day teams are due to be posted. After this date you can only join a Serious or Medium team if someone else drops out. This is usually around the 24th or 25th of the month. Fun teams, and Solo spots are always open.

* Most of our challenges are team challenges. Basically, you sign-up for the level of team you want to join, and I will then post teams before the challenge begins. Teams will be listed on a specific thread, and a group message will go out to let you know teams are posted. Each team will have a chat thread, and a thread to post reviews. It's up to you to comment on your team's chat thread before the challenge begins to let us know you are ready to go. If you don't do this we will message you to ask you to check in, and if you still don't check in you will lose your spot on the team.

* We have 3 levels of teams, or there is usually an option to go solo too.
Levels are -
- Serious - this is for people who like a challenge, and are able to read a lot of books. If you sign-up for a Serious team, we expect you to read a minimum of 12 books per month.
- Medium - this is for people who like a challenge, but aren't able to read as many books as those people in Serious teams. If you sign-up for a Medium team, we expect you to read 8 to 12 books per month.
- Just-For-Fun - this is for people who like to join in, but want a more relaxed challenge. There is no minimum number of books that you need to read, we won't message you if you disappear, and we won't pressure you to post reviews. This is also a good place to start if you're not sure how many books you will manage to read, or if you've got a busy month planned, or if you're not sure how much time you'll have.
- Solo - this is for people who would prefer not to be in a team for any reason. Like Just-For-Fun teams, there is no pressure here, but you also don't have to chat with anyone or discuss strategy with anyone.

* We leave it up to you which level of team you would like to join, with one exception. If you keep signing up for a Serious team or a Medium team, and don't read the minimum number of books, then we will ask you to step down to a fun team, or play solo, until you are reading enough to join a Serious or Medium team.

* On a basic level you earn points in our challenges by reading books. The number of points you earn is determined by how long your book is, and you can double those points if you have buddy read your book. Depending on the challenge, there might be ways to earn bonus points also.

* When the challenge is underway, players read books and write either a short review or status updates about the book. They then post on their team's review thread to say what book they have read, along with a link to their review, and the page count for that book. Mods will then award points, and then points for each team will be posted on the main thread. This is done as three scoreboards - one each for Serious, Medium, and Just-For-Fun, so that everybody can see which team is in the lead for each type of team.

* At the end of the challenge the team with the most points wins! So we will have a Serious winner, a Medium winner, and a Just-For-Fun winner. We will also post an individual leaderboard of everybody who took part ☺

This is quite a basic overview of our challenges, there will be rules which are specific to each challenge, and ways of earning bonus points or completing tasks which will be specific to each challenge.

Please remember that the best thing to do is to read the challenge posts before the start of the challenge so that you know what you are supposed to be doing, and you know what will and will not count. If you have questions or aren't sure, just ask, and we will do our best to answer you (you can ask on the main challenge thread, the 'talk to the mods' thread, or you can always message us if you would prefer to ask a question that way instead).

It's also a good idea to read our general challenge rules here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... as this might also help you to work out how things work ☺

Group Buddy Reads are a bit like a book of the month. They're voted on by group members, and then we buddy read them together.

GBRs are chosen using Goodreads' lists. Members can vote, unvote, or add books to the lists, which means you can vote for as many or as few as you would like.

Books are usually picked based on which books are at the top of the lists on the 22nd of the previous month (so GBRs for June are chosen on May 22nd etc.).
We usually take 2 from the GBR list, 2 from the Indie GBR list, and 1 from the Freebie GBR list.

You can find our GBR lists here -
GBR - https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/8...
Indie GBR - https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/8...
Freebie GBR - https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/9...

GBR is for any book (as long as it is YA/NA).
Indie GBR is for self-published authors, or author's from very small publishing houses.
Freebie GBR is for books which are perma-free.

If any authors would like their book adding to one of these lists, please let me know.

You can also see which books we've already read here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

GBRs run from the first of the month, to the end of the month, so an April GBR will run from April 1st to April 30th, and a October GBR will run from October 1st to October 31st.

GBRs are just like any other buddy read, let us know your thoughts on the GBR thread, feel free to chat with other people who are reading with you, and please remember to use spoiler tags to hide anything that might spoiler the book for other people. (You can do this by typing <.spoiler.> without the dots).

GBRs count for buddy read points in our challenges too!

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90918 comments Mod

Usually, we only send two messages a month -

- 1st message ~12th of the month
This message will contain links to sign-up for our upcoming challenge, links to our current challenge, and links to our GBR lists, so that you can vote/unvote/add to the lists if you would like.

- 2nd message ~25th of the month
This message will contain a link to where teams for the upcoming challenge are posted, so that you can sign in. We'll also let you know which books came top of our GBR lists, and therefore which books will be our GBRs for the coming month.

We don't usually send out more than these two messages a month.

When we send these messages, they go to all group members, including ourselves. We can't choose who to send them to, and the only way to opt out is to leave the group. If you're not interested in the Group Message, please just delete it from your inbox.

We send these messages out to let people know things that we think they might want to know, we don't send them out to annoy people, which is why we usually limit ourselves to two a month.
