I've seen a lot of people not taking this seriously too. It's unfortunate because it just takes longer to get through that way. But we are still "flattening the curve" by staying away and reducing the number of infections. So I guess we just do the best we can and keep ourselves and those we normally spend time with safer.

How old were you when you read Where The Red Fern Grows?

I read in seventh grade but have recently meet people who’s kids are reading it in third grade. It blew my mind that a class would read such a heavy story at such a young age.

I don't remember reading that one. I just looked it up though and it is listed with an AR (accelerated reader) level of 4.9. It is recommended for Middle Grades (4-8). So, third grade is early. They must be advanced readers and hopefully mature enough for the concepts.

I don't remember reading that either. I think the only required reading we had to do was Shakespeare. Which is like learning another language.

I think I have zoom. We've been meeting together for spiritual meetings, and have been able to say hi and talk to one another. My daughter knows how to work it, I don't.

Good question... I think that it may add to my perspective, but not really change my opinion. I tend to like or dislike books based on my enjoyment of them, so if you say that the book had some amazing metaphors or insights or whatever I will be able to appreciate the book more, but probably not like it more. How about you?

I'm not sure when I updated here last, so I apologize if I've already mentioned this. My grandson has come to stay with us for a while. It will be two weeks on Sunday. The time goes by so fast with him here. I spend most days now helping him with his online learning. His school is really keeping it going. They post all sorts of lessons and assignments for him to do and he is still being graded.

The schools in our area have closed for the rest of the school year and stopped grading all together. I'm not really sure what their expectations are for the kids, but if I knew I wasn't being graded, it would be summer break for me!

Breezy, my grandson's class is reading The Call of the Wild. They are in the fourth grade. It seemed a little early to me with the violence towards animals and it made me think of your comment about Where The Red Fern Grows. The Call of the Wild is listed as middle grade 4-8 and has an AR level of 8, but it is also found in two lists: Survival: Fiction for Grades 3-5 and Must-read Classics for Older Kids. The older kids one fits in my opinion, but 'Fiction for Grades 3-5' seems a bit early. Maybe kids are reading this subject matter earlier than they used to?

Although... I remember reading Black Beauty, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, and Watership Down in elementary school, basically 2nd to 3rd grade. So, maybe just my perspective has changed. Also, apparently I read a lot of books about animals. lol

I had a zoom "happy hour" with some friends last Friday. We watched a free theatre show online, then met up and chatted on zoom. It was a lot of fun and nice to see some faces that I hadn't seen for a while. We are doing it again tomorrow with The Phantom of the Opera. I really enjoyed that show. I've seen it in the theater a couple of times once in Las Vegas and once, I think in Boston. I've also seen the movie version, which was quite good. I remember watching it on TV starring Gerard Butler‎ and ‎Emmy Rossum‎ and being so surprised that Gerard Butler could sing! lol Anyway, looking forward to that tomorrow. :)

I'm glad you have your grandson with you, Kristie. Thank God for family at this troublesome time. Does he understand the Corona Virus and why things are the way they are?

And it's so good to be with friends. I'll be glad when I can hug all of mine again. Enjoy the Phantom of the Opera.

He does, Groovy. His mom explained it all to him before he came down and explained why he was coming to stay with us for a while. We just got the notice today that his school will be closed for the rest of the school year, so he's likely with us until the end of August now. I'm hoping that my daughter is able to come down to visit while he's here. That's the plan, but I guess we have to wait to see if Coronavirus has other plans. There are some real hot spots between us, including New York.

It's movie night at our house tonight... I can't wait to see what we'll be watching. The first Friday he was here he chose Elf. lol

Welcome, Judith! That's a great goal. I remember when my kids were young; I struggled to find any time for reading.

How is everyone doing on their reading goals for the year (if you set one)? I am behind by 5 books. I hit a slump in March and am just starting to come out of it. All this time at home and no focus for reading. I'm hoping to catch up a bit soon, but I may have to adjust my goal now that my situation has changed.

I was completely off goodreads and I was working and studying, so I never finished any of the 2018 and 2019 reading challenges! This year, I wasn't as optimistic either, so I only set it to 10 books. But I do feel some kind of a reading rush coming, so hopefully I can extend it to 30, hopefully 50 books soon! :)

Hi, Judith, and welcome!

I must admit, I have been lacking in my goal of books. I don't really set goals, I just read a book if I'm enticed. Since I've put my writing career on hiatus, I do want to read more. But between wallpapering and painting the house, and planting a new flower garden, I will do my best to find some good books to read.

I know this is weird coming from a grown-up, but my favorite books to read are Dr. Seuss and other children's books. I also like clean suspense.

And Dr. Seuss is awesome. ❤️ Let's see... some of my old school favorites were: The Giving Tree, The Monster at the End of this Book, and The Aristocats. More recently, I enjoyed Hair Love and We're All Wonders. If you haven't read The Wonky Donkey, check it out. It's quite funny. :)

Sorry! I think I worded that funny. Those aren't Dr. Seuss titles. Those were books in addition to Dr. Seuss that I enjoyed as a kid and a couple from more recently.

Hi, I'm looking for a book and am very sorry if I am posting in the wrong spot. It's a historical romance, and there is a scene in the book where to Hero tells the brother of the that he has seduced the heroine, and the Hero and the brother fight in the house.

It sounds like it could be (view spoiler)[ Red Queen (hide spoiler)]. It's not historical fiction, but does have royalty and I think a similar twist, unless I'm remembering it wrong.
